Watching Eagles D last night got me wondering. Why can't Steelers draft players like DeJean and J Carter? Eagles usually draft near the Steelers in the 20s. Steelers need players like this for DL and secondary.

Dejean and Mitchell fell into our laps in the first round but we passed on both of them to take an injury prone tackle who was out for the season with another injury.

with this owner calling the shots you're looking at a repeat of the Dallas Cowboys. This is where we will be as long as this rooney is running things. He is acting a lot like jerry jones.

The Ravens draft where Pitt does. The Eagles draft where Pitt does. It's the coaching. Pure and simple.

Some perspective. The Eagles have won two Super Bowls with two different coaches and two different QBs since the last time the Steelers won a playoff game.

This team hasn't drafted and developed an elite DB since Troy Polamalu (Cowher pick). Ironic considering our HC was hired based primarily on his defensive secondary coaching merits. Think about it...

AR2 is all about $$$.. as long as the Steelers are competitive and doing just enough to make him a healthy profit, he's satisfied. If it weren't for the public outcry to get rid of Canada, AR2 would have let him coach out his contract instead of having to buy it out. Tomlin needs to be held to the same standard assuming this season plays out like a typical Tomlin season does. Enough is enough.

Yeah, the Eagles GM seems to take the guy that was universally rated 10 spots higher in the first two rounds of the past several drafts.

I see a guy sitting out there, rated like 10th overall and the Steelers pass him up to take a bigger "need". It sucks. I was OK with Fautanu last year. I would have been happier with Mitchell who was rated like 10th overall on average by pundits.

The Eagles got mega-lucky with Jalen Carter. I still shake my head the hometown Falcons passed him up for a freaking RB at what, 9th overall? Stupid, just stupid. I thought Carter was the best player in that draft class. He so dominated in the SEC, it was scary. Only his stamina would wane a bit but when he was in and not going 10 straight plays he couldn't be stopped without a full double-team.

Well, DeJean was injured before the draft and didn't work out the mistake was passing on a CB Mitchell who runs a 4.3.

This is also why the Eagles are good.

Well, that and superior coaching. People can say what they will about Siriani.... but he has delivered a Super Bowl win and an appearance 2 years ago. Pretty much running circles around Popcorn.

Anybody can coach that talented team Sirianni was probably close to getting fired after they collapsed at the end of last season.

We've had talented teams, although probably not super bowl caliber, get absolutely blasted out of the gate for the past how many postseason games now? All 21+ point first half deficits or something bizarre like that. Talented coaches don't let that become the norm.

The Eagles build inside out. They emphasize the six DL, and look at the second unit as a rotational unit. That is why they drafted Jalen Carter despite being already stacked. The Linebacker in their 3-4 is not as important as the D-Line.

Our whole defensive philosophy is kind of whacked.

It feels like our 3-4 focuses on the Linebacker. Outside in. Watt and Highsmith don't have much impact past December, they are worn down. I like TJ, but not at a huge cap hit. No thanks. The Eagles might let Sweat walk, despite the fact he is a beast.

Our D-Line, other than an aging Cam, just isn't good enough. Not a single guy could even make the Eagles' practice squad.

How many collapses, December tailspins have we witnessed under Popcorn since he's been HC?

    2009
    2012
    2018
    2020
    2023
    2024

How many other head coaches would still have their job after this many season ending tailspins?

We never replaced Hampton who commanded two blockers and created lanes for the LB's. Our ILB's have never been as good since Farrior retired. Shazier was fast but undersized. So we have two OLB's as really our sole source of QB pressure. Cam gets his sacks but not enough to be game changing. With the league being so much a passing league, you have to recreate the front four and have them be able to solely apply consistent pressure on the teams QB and then the LB's can roam to make tackles on RB's and be able to cover TE's or RB's coming out of the backfield. If you miss on building those front four an still need LB's to blitz then you are f'd. Now couple this with the fact we need huge help in the skills positions on offense. We have too many holes and its going to take years to fix and we are not facing that reality that we truly need to start.

You are right about the holes. That is why roster mismanagement will eventually catch up with the Steelers. There have been too many misses in the draft. Dallas skated for several years but their roster mismanagement caught up to them last season.

We need a massive infusion of talent on offense and the defensive line.

Next season could be the first losing season for Tomlin. The Steelers overperformed this season, to be honest.

And none of those teams were talented on both sides of the ball like the Eagles.
