Loved seeing ben play but saying Wilson has lost a lot of his talent but still wants to play is rich. Ben played 3yrs. longer than he should have , imho did nothing or little to help rudolf develop . Vast talent but not a real student of the game just made it up (sandlot football ) fun to watch when it worked .

Got us two SBs. Come back when another QB gets us a playoff win.

I find it funny when guys give Ben hate and yet they watch this pathetic **** show we have now??

Pastor isn’t wrong about a couple things though. Ben did hang on too long he wasn’t receptive to Mason and he could have been a better student.

yes ben won two and lost one. ben really could have been so much more if... just like ben though russell may not be the guy to teach a new qb. they had their own kind of rare style. i'd rather a good qb coach bring along the next one.

Is the point of the thread to compare Ben and Russ? For those saying Ben stayed too long, who was going to do any better than Ben? Nobody, because the steelers FO never got serious about replacing him and still isn't as far as I'm concerned. Russ is just an overrated midget retread.

If you really want to compare them, look at them in the same year of their careers. In other words, don't compare year 18 Ben to year 13 Russ.

Roethlisberger was a really good QB and I'm thankful Steelers had him at QB for his entire career.... BUT: The first half of his career was MUCH better than his 2nd half. When the team was built around defense, Ben was much more successful. From 2012-2021.... Steelers tried to build around Roethlisberger with killer Bs and let the defense slip to the point of mediocrity. The results were 3 playoff wins and sh!t ton of losses, sub par performances for Roethlisberger in the post season. Compare that to his run from 2004-2011. Same could be said for Russ and his time at Seattle.... when the Legion of Boom moved on or retired from Seattle.... Russ had some playoff flops after the 2 Super Bowl appearances.

The team fared better in the first half of his career. Ben was a SIGNIFICANTLY better player the second half of his career. He was only behind Brady, Manning, and Rodgers in terms of players at his position during his career (maybe Brees too, but that is more debatable than the others IMO).

Statiscally, yes he was a better QB.... but it didn't translate to playoff wins. Regular season success, yes. Same could be said for Aaron Rodgers last half of his career.

It wasn't just statistically, he was factually just a much better QB later in his career than early in his career. The team was more successful early in his career because the team as a whole was significantly more talented during that portion of his career. Looking at the SB rosters in 2005 and 2008 is insane. Those teams were LOADED on both sides of the ball. The Killer B's era was mainly just loaded on offense. The defense never got good enough to win anything (and tbh we got pretty unlucky with injuries to Bell and AB during separate runs, which significantly hurt our chances).

Playoff success isn't the only metric of determining how good a player is/was. It goes a long way to determining their legacy, but football is a team game and team accolades don't always prove anything about an individual player.

I know... we get one of these "look at me" posts bashing Ben every few hours, and yet that's somehow accepted by the emoticon gibberish crowd. In fact, it's applauded, yet it has absolutely nothing to do with the Steelers in 2025.

However, when discussing the issues of TODAY's team, the emoticon gibberish crowd goes on a cancel-opinions campaign.

It was Tomlin's defense that failed the team. They couldn't stop anyone when it counted. Giving 48 points to Brian Bortles, losing to one dimensional Tim Tebow etc. Tomlin is a rah rah guy and is a lot dumber than he looks.

TJ Watt is a sure fire HOF who will never win a playoff game in his career.

Unfortunately, that is what it looks like. His brother didn't have much playoff success either. Won 3 games in his career (2 of which came in his first two seasons), and never won past the WC round.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought of Ben Wilson the fullback for one of the Packers championship team. I think it was Superbowl II when the game was stopped to look for one of Wilson's contact lenses on the field but it was never found and he didn't return to the game.

I am hoping Pete Carroll takes Wilson back. The Steelers need to build the rest of the roster.

It’s a team sport, coaching matters, players matter, healthy players matter.

During the stretch of playoff losses there were key injuries: Lev Bell, AB after the hit in Cincy, Shazier. For that matter, what might have been if Pouncey played SB 45.

All teams have injuries, but some of this recent run those injuries were significant to the playoff losses. The reality is, up until the 10-3 record, this team was over achieving in the regular season since 2019.

Russ is a shell of his former self. Ben at 13 yrs was way better.

This team was successful years ago because of DL and BA. Neither coordinator since comes even close.

Bills, Chiefs, Eagles and Commanders have a lot of injuries and players on IR. Commanders lost their best OL. They are playing in conference championship games. Next man up does not apply for the Steelers since 2011.
