What’s the point of all of this? The point is we have top ten talent as a team I believe. The issue is we don’t have a top ten QB or top ten coach in my mind. We are in the middle of the pack Offensive talent wise and number 2 talent wise on defense.

We are middle of the pack for overall coaching talent and thats generous. I believe if we infuse some more talent on offense and address the assistant coaches both on offense and defense you will see the Head Coach and and QB talent rise as well as the overall talent which should result in more wins.

To me though that requires Tomlin to make the necessary changes with the coaching staff. We have a chance to be the most like Philadelphia. They have a stacked roster. They have a good OC and DC. Their Head Coach is nothing special but he is willing and smart enough to hire good Coordinators to take advantage of his excellent talent on the team.

I believe we have a Front office that has the potential to be very strong if Tomlin and Rooney allow them to be. I believe we have the talent on the offensive line to develop it into a top five unit in the league. I believe we have the talent with a couple more pieces on the defense to develop it into a top five unit in the league.

I believe Justin Fields has alot of solar traits to Jaylen Hurtz and if we put the right talent and scheme around him he can have just as much success as Hurtz does.

The hardest thing in this league is to find a franchise a QB. In the mean time we might as well build up the rest of the roster including the coaching staff to be competitive. Philadelphia has set the blue print. We might as well follow it.

I think you are optimistic about Fields and the game has passed Russ by. Time for him to retire or finish his career as a backup. Ranking Pitt as 15th in the league at QB is too generous. I would put them in the bottom quartile at 24 or lower. The postseason has highlighted (again) how important having a top tier QB is to playing championship caliber football. Pittsburgh needs to stop trying to claim other teams worthless garbage throw-aways or mis-drafting at QB. For all the praise that Colbert got and now Khan gets for drafting and FA acquisitions, they have royally sucked at acquiring QB talent and the coaching staff has royally sucked at developing it.

Oh. The rankings are one posters own opinion? I didn't figure that out I guess. Some days I'm better than on others.

I also think the overall team talent and defensive team talent are ranked too high.

On defense the DL is weak. That is killing is in run defense. Our pass rush did not get home nearly enough. A lot of communication issues in our secondary all season.

Overall we still have no idea what this offense even looks like yet. Plus what I already pointed out on defense. Plus what was pointed out on the QB.

The talent level is at best unknown to lower third.

Talent is one thing, but putting the talent in places to succeed is another. Pretty much why other things like communication and chemistry is important. FA signings are good if they fit into the system and fit in with the talent and personalities of the team. The more years we have to plug in 4-5 starters from FA alone, the worse this team is going to get. We gotta hope that the 23 draft stops the bleeding and the bulk of them get 2nd contracts.

I think you're dogging our talent a bit. Most places have the Steelers' front 7 ranked in the top 3 in the league. I understand that a lot of it has to do with our pass rush (led by Heyward and Watt), but this team was ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing yards and 6th in YPC allowed. We were strong against the run for most of the season, though we did struggle in spurts. We were 25th against the pass, though we were 8th in QB Rating allowed, 3rd in Int's and led the league in turnovers created. 8th in PPG allowed. By most metrics this was a very good defense led by one of the league's best front 7's. Very few teams have guys that received All Pro votes at so many levels. Heyward and Watt were All Pro's, while Queen, Minkah, and Porter Jr all received votes. Nobody except for maybe Philly has as many high end talents on that side of the ball.

Offensively we have a pretty solid interior line led by two really good looking young players (Frazier is going to be great), a really good 3rd down back (who was criminally underused by this team), a solid pass catching TE, and a top 10 talent at WR in Pickens. We lacked quality Tackle play (Fautanu injury hurt) and lacked a true #2 WR. I expect us to fix that in the offseason. QB is obvious but Fields is an NFL caliber starter that was a top 15 rated passer in his 6 starts. I don't think that position is a huge detriment (though it is tough when you realize that the best 4 QB's in the league are in the AFC and two of them reside in the North), though it certainly isn't a massive strength.

ST was a strength too. We have the league's best kicker, and our punt returner received All Pro votes as well. We had two separate ST guys receive All Pro votes as well.

I'd say were a top 3 talented defense and probably in the 15-20 range offensively. We're also a top ST team, maybe the best. The roster as a whole is right around top 10 league wide. It is really quite hard to argue otherwise.

Those rankings are from stats. We are talking talent level. I just didn't see it like you did I guess.

Why are there a varying number of teams ranked in each category? I kind of feel like we're cheating and reading someone's private diary with all these personal rankings. 60 minutes on the field is all that really matters and obviously, no matter the stats, the Steelers mostly didn't have it this year. I chose not to use the term "execution" in this post because it would be the far easier way out.

Each team has about the same level talent in their starting 11.

Once Cam goes off for a breather though, how does his backup measure? Do this at each position and you can clearly see how talent level is not very easily measured.

I feel like we had good talent level at OLB. 4 guys that were able to contribute and be productive.
ILB, my opinion, we have 2 very good starters. Behind them though was a rookie and 2 not so much.

DL has been the subject of much talk and speculation already. We have what most on here have called 2 starters and some inconsistent role players.

I think our secondary has improved. I think it will improve even more next season (I hope). Communication was the biggest problem with this group, not talent level. My opinion.

Fair point. Perhaps my QB ranking is a bit of a projection with Fields if we could manage him right.

I can’t think of a team better than the Steelers on a per player basis talent wise on defense other than Philadelphia. Who else is better than them on a per player basis on defense?

I agree with you 100 percent. I feel like Fields could be similar to Jaylen Hurtz if we got the right pieces around him and schemed him right. My point in putting this together is to show the actual weakness on this team is our coaching. We have the talent. Yes we Russ hurt us in the last month but that doesn’t explain the collapse of the defense and the line and the run game. The talent is there we just need to cultivate and develop it and coach it up.

I didn’t base my rankings on stats. I based it on the pedigree and talent we have on each side of the ball.

I did the rankings down to where the Steelers were ranked. If they were above ten then I ranked the remaining teams out of ten to fill out the top ten.

But isn’t communication a coaching issue? Thats my whole point of this. Everyone loves to point to execution and lack of talent but when you actually look at our defense as one example, where are you gonna upgrade with the exception of Ogunjobi, Cam Sutton and Donte Jackson?

    Chargers
    Ravens
    Bills
    Jags
    Texans
    Lions
    Packers
    Vikings
    Bears
    49ers
    And you already said Eagles.

These teams are at least on par with the Steelers defense talent-wise. My opinion.

You're overrating the talent on defense they have one really good player on the DL and he's 35 years, old. Benton didn't make that second year leap like most people expected, Larry O is useless. They have one legit CB in Porter Jr the rest of them are unreliable.
