Tomlin is the longest tenured coach in the NFL (18 years); no coaching tree?

No need to copy Tomlin, other teams can just go back and copy Tampa's defense from 2005.

That might be true, though some teams would argue the level for mediocrity.
It's totally up to him to raise his level.
My expectation is not optimistic but since he is here there is only hope.

I've been a supporter of Mike Tomlin, but imo it's time for change. At this point, it looks like he's sitting cozy collecting a paycheck waiting out retirement.

    I don't see a fire in him.

Pretty simple, MT micro manages his assistants. Takes all credit
when things go right. Whoever is responsible for hiring assistance
really needs to be looked at also. Changes need to be made, new ideas need
to be looked at. We have fallen behind,MT message is not working.

The whole coaching tree thing is meaningless.

The NYT or WSJ, can't remember which one, published a complete Super Bowl NFL coaching tree about five years ago and what it showed was pretty interesting

    a) Two coaches who had relatively sparse trees given their record of success were Lombardi and Noll. Lombardi had 6 and Noll 4 1st generation HC's.
    b) The coaches who had a lot were guys like Paul Brown, Bill Walsh, Parcells, and Don Shula.
    c) Someone who had a big tree was Marty Schottenheimer, he of the 5-13 playoff record. He is MT on steroids in terms regular season success vs playoff success.
    d) Belichik had a decent sized tree, but all of them have pretty much been failures.
    e) A lot of the trees are interconnected since many HC's served on a number of staffs as assistants

Coaching trees probably don't mean much in that it's subject to a lot of variability and interpretation, see Arians discussion above, and one can learn different things at different levels from different jobs all of which can shape your future success, and a big factor may be how networked you are with coahces, GMs, and owners of other franchises. The last is probably somewhat negatively correlated with how long you've been at one organization. One other thing is how owners generally want some "innovative" offense mind as their next HC. That hardly fits the Steelers mold, which is probably why, along with organizational stability/stagnancy, Noll, Cowher, and Tomlin all have relatively small trees compared to guys like Shanahan, Holmgren, or even McVay.

While coaching trees are interesting, they're probably a very poor proxy for coaching ability.

I understand what Karl is expressing here, but I disagree on 2 points:

    1. He's not gonna "raise his level" of coaching, and that's because he's already overachieving at his current level of intellect, and that includes his position of employment. He's not gonna wake up some day and be some great coach, he's not gonna wake up and be some expert film reader or some expert game manager or some great player developer...he's just gonna wake up everyday, for the rest of his life, and be an AVERAGE football coach. In college, maybe he would be an above average coach, but in the NFL, his ceiling was a secondary coach or, at best, a defensive coordinator. The Steelers made a mistake, but our owner is too gutless to admit it.

    2. For many people, there is ZERO hope for Mike Dumblin...the only hope is Artie II sells the team or turns over ownership to someone else. Personally, my "hope" rest with the idea that the younger generation of Steelers fans wake up and smell what Dumblin is shoveling. My hope is we boo him every home game, and even in public outside of the stadium. We hold him ACCOUNTABLE for his job.

Same with Artie II. He should NEVER be threatened, but he can be heckled and talked down upon. Write letters, let him understand how we feel when we see him. People are planning on putting anti-Dumblin billboards up in Pittsburgh soon, and that's GREAT! So are the "BOO-OUTS" people are planning at home games next year. Call the front office and express your displeasure. He's on Tweeter (X) or whatever, let him understand what he's doing to our lives...between Artie & Dumblin, they've set this organization back 60 years! Enough is enough...

I've been a supporter of Tomlin. I think it's time for new wine in new bottles.

Tomlin is just hanging in there collecting a paycheck for retirement at this point. I don't see a lot of fire.

Andy Reid is considered the best coach in the league right now, I don't think any of the guys from his coaching tree is doing anything as a HC in the NFL .

Old news, but true. This guy doesn’t create opportunities for his coaches because he controls every aspect of everything guys never get the opportunity to flourish under Tomlin.

If Tomlin has room temperature IQ, he would waive the no trade clause in his contract and agree to that reported trade to Chicago. Next year he might become the most hated man in Pittsburgh. No one is buying his schtick anymore and TJ is breaking down just like his older brother did at the same age. Steelers are 1-13 when TJ doesn’t play, and TJ isn’t TJ with injuries and age.
