    It will be a large part of the reason. You yourself have said the job was guaranteed to Wilson before signing Fields.

    It’s the most likely reason for switching from a 4-2 QB which has probably never happened and not because of your narrative that they saw enough from Fields.

    Your so right Darnold had a QB friendly HC that is great for any QB. The Steelers don't have that type of QB friendly head coach. Tomlin needs a QB that does not need much guidance or help.

    it’s been 7 years and Tomlin hasn’t built a decent O line I don’t expect it to change now. The chiefs did it in a year with worse draft positions than we had.

    Oh you mean the teams you have to beat to make it anywhere in the playoffs? So why try the same thing again so we get a crap draft position and blown out in the wild card round.

    Darnold showed us who he is. He is an average at best QB. Somebody is going to overpay for him and be in Kirk Cousin type situation.

    He is who we thought he was, last 2 games cost him millions, But hey, there is a fool born every day.
    What I am not understanding is how world class athletes can not learn how to read defense go thru their progressions?
    Why aren't they coached up? Are they lazy don't want to put in time? Are the coaches lazy? Please can some one tell me?

    Wilson was guaranteed “the pole position” going into camp but there would still be a competition

    It would appear Fields did not win the competition in camp OTAs or practice

    But then Wilson proceeded to get hurt so how much of was there really a “competition”.

    If you remember, Wilson left here without a contract and then went to the Giants and did the same. It was reported he was seeking a guaranteed starting job and then Steelers signed him after that. It was believed they gave in and gave him the guarantee he sought. Then Kenny hightailed it out of here. That could explain why Pickett reacted the way he did but still shouldn’t have tucked tail and ran from adversity.

    Then Fields goers 4-2 and gets benched which is unheard of. All speculation of course but the pieces fit. Or maybe I just wrote the synopsis for a best selling fiction novel.

    Or maybe Tomlin is just a dope for starting Wilson.

    Who knows :shrug:

    Pole position doesn’t guarantee anything. Let’s not forget the offense wasn’t some juggernaut with fields at the helm. With that being said I would prefer to have fields in 2025. If for no other reason fields is 10 years younger, showed some improvement, and this will be his first time having the same oc for consecutive seasons.
