With the season over, I will be going over our offseason outlook, unit by unit and evaluating what we "should" do going forward..... That said, everything starts up top and trickles down, so I will be starting with the coaches..
    Hold on to your seats

Mike Tomlin ---- I've been saying for quite a while that Tomlin needed to go.. there's a lot to be said for being a coach that everyone wants to play for, however, a coach needs to be part tactician, disciplinarian and motivator.
What he doesn't need to be is everyone's best friend.... the player's coach moniker is severely overrated... at some point you actually have to "coach" and display some type of knowledge... Tomlin falls short in nearly every technical matter... it's long past time that the standard comes back to superbowl or bust, rather than non losing seasons.... as far as I'm concerned, there is only one team every yr that has a winning seasons, and that's the one that brings home the Lombardi.... Until that becomes the attitude, then we can look forward to being middle of the pack going forward.
It's time for this man to go

Arthur Smith ---- i was not a big fan of Smith's hiring.... I believed he got far to much credit for handing the ball off to Derrick Henry and play action to AJ Brown.... any fool could've been successful with that formula.... we, on a whole, were happy with the signing because he replaced the village idiot... but if we stop comparing him to Matt Canada and really look at the facts, then we will see the truth, and that truth is that Arthur Smith is in over his head... there is no innovation in his schemes..
As misplaced and inappropriate as George Pickens' comments during his interview was, they were the truth...
    Smith also needs to go

Teryl Austin ---- A masterful position coach, but totally out of his element when tasked to oversee the whole thing... Austin is clueless in his dealings beyond the front 7... he has no real blitz packages... he can't scheme his players into any real position.... players that have been all pro have regressed in his defense simply because he doesn't know how to move his players and develop a game plan to maximize their talents... opposing coaches are playing chess while Austin plays checkers.
    Another that needs to go

Danny Smith ---- Currently the only main coach that warrants any praise.... under Smith's watch, the special teams unit slowly progressed until it became truly special... coverage units were solid... we routinely block kicks and punts.... Chris Boswell has consistently been stronger every yr, and at least some of that has to be attributed to Smith's tutelage...
The only coach that not only should be retained, but should get a raise

    Next up: Quarterbacks

It's hard to think nothing will happen, but unless Art takes an extra dose of ex lax to rid himself of his constipation the only crap flushed will be minimal asst and position coach's and even some of them might get a raise because we went from low 20's in rushing to near top 10. The Jury is still out on Omar, a couple of drafts that look very promising, some clear misses overall. Bottom line is nothing changes until someone changes, Art has the keys and he seems comfortable driving an outdated Prius that gets you to a certain point, but the battery charge runs out and the gas tank goes empty before the finish line.

Maybe Austin gets canned, but nobody else is going anywhere, so nothing changes.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are all about the status quo.

Nothing changes. I don't know if I can stomach the same thing again next year.

I think you could keep going down the line of coaches. The o-line coach and QB coach come to mind as others who have shown stagnation at best and more realistically, their respective areas have gotten worse.

I’m feeling like Broderick Jones isn’t a starting Tackle in this league, right or left. Seems like a wasted pick to me.

People here think he will move to LT and magically be great. I don’t see it.

The defensive coordinator is Tomlin. Yet we keep firing the defensive coordinator and not Tomlin. It’s comical. We fire offensive coordinators when they are told the most important thing is to kill the clock and scoring points is optional. That all comes from Tomlin.

I’d like to see Arth back as QB coach and I could give Azzanni a pass as WR coach, hard to blame him for not being able to polish a turd.

Im indifferent to Smith. It’s been speculated that he wanted to work with Fields. He was certainly limited in what he could do with Wilson. And also because it’s bad to learn a new playbook every year I’d be ok with him coming back.

    Tomlin, Austin and Myers gone.

I can’t believe how bad our OL still is with all the attention and draft capital we have given it.

You missed the most important element. The owner. Its madness that we keep putting out the same product year after year without any change.

The only way any of this madness stops is if a respected player actually goes to amendment and asks to be traded. I feel like it needs to get that bad before Rooney actually makes real change as in getting rid of Tomlin. I don’t see Watt or Heyward doing that. Perhaps Minkah maybe but I doubt it. Pickens can do it and it will all be on Pickens.

I often wonder what the behind the scenes dynamic is among all the coaches. On this board and elsewhere, it is often touted that Tomlin actually runs the defense, and sometimes the offense, but is that the reality? How do we know that? And what about position coaches? Don’t we have a quarterbacks coach? What does he do? Defensive back? Receivers coach? The whole staff underperforms. I am not sure what player talent we have when the schemes are so bad no player could thrive.

Fire all of them. Don't saddle the new coach with any of the stench from the Tomlin "standard". Let him hire his own staff. Maybe keep Danny, but let the new coach make the call.

Of course, this is just a fantasy.

Pat Meyer absolutely has to go,..... as for qb coach tom Arth, we need to actually have a qb in order to properly evaluate him

We will never get a really good coach without letting him pick his OC.
You're absolutely right, it's not good to learn a new playbook every year, but that's mostly for young QB's. WR's and RB's can learn it no problem. It doesn't matter to them. We don't have our future QB on the roster so I really don't think a change in the playbook makes any difference.

The time is now though. Guys like Brian Johnson won't be around long. If the Steelers are going to do anything, it has to be now. They won't though so whatever.

Oh, I think things will happen. But I don't think it's gonna be what everyone wants. MT will get the "sit down and stern talking to, with the expectation that things need to change". And then people like Austin or another coach will get the axe, and all will be well with them.

I like Vrabel but Im surprised the Patriots chose him over Johnson with Drake at QB. That guy has the chance to be the next big sensation in the league. Imagine what Johnson could do with him.
