Profootballtalk.com reports the Steelers are interested in free agent DEs Dwight Freeney and Elvis Dumervil.
Pittsburgh is still looking for someone to come in and replace James Harrison. It's unlikely that Dumervil will be playing anywhere other than Denver or Baltimore, but Freeney could be an option. The Steelers already whiffed on free agent OLB Victor Butler. Mar 21 - 9:56 PM

Looks like the Ravens are interested too. What a surprise! A theme is starting to develop here. If the Steelers are interested in a washed up pass rusher, the Ravens are interested in the same washed up pass rusher and vice versa.

    No...

Fn eh anytime a LB/pass rusher is available/etc the Steelers are going to be linked to them apparently.

    The end.

Eh... How was he overall in the 3-4 last year? When it comes to run defense and coverage, wouldn't we be better off with Worilds, who has more experience at the position and in the system? Freeney'd be dynamite to put on the field for passing downs, but I'm assuming he'll want too much money to play half the snaps. Or you could start him, but that sounds like a lot of money for what might not be an upgrade.

Please I hope we don't even make an offer to freeney. Its Worilds time, he has been decent in a back up role just like Harrison was back a few years ago. Now JH was a freak of nature when it came to pass rushing when he was in his prime. Obviously Worilds is not JH but its time for the steelers to see what they have in him. Why bring in an aging freeney for a year or two and hinder any progress we have made with JW? Our goal is to get younger on defense, not replace one aging LB with another.

I would say no to Freeney. If we want an aging 3rd down pass rush specialist, I would look to Abraham before Freeney. However, I wouldn't pay much for either at this point. I'm not sure if he washed up comment applies to Dumervil too, but he is definitely not washed up. He had 11 sacks and 6 forced fumble last season. He's also 29. He is nowhere near washed up, but he is a huge step down from JH in run defense.

For those that aren't expecting much, I believe Worilds is going to be a nice surprise.

Agreed. This has always been the Steelers way. Keep in mind, JH was cut what, 3 times...because he was seen as "not cutting it." We all know how that turned out. We'll never know what we have with Worilds if he's not given the opportunity.

I think all this Free Agent Pass Rusher stuff is talk to just get Worilds mad and go gang busters. Let's not forget Worilds I believe was second or maybe he even tied Timmons to lead the team in sacks last year and he wasn't even playing full time. As long as Worilds stays healthy he can do the job, but I still won't be shocked to see them draft a pass rusher high this year.

And I hope they do! I love Woodley, but I am starting to have genuine concern about how long he's gonna hold-up physically. If he has more problems this year, it may be time to take it on the chin and cut ties, but they'd have to be grooming somebody already if it came to that...

Freeney is not a 3-4 guy and this just doesn't make sense. I highly doubt he winds up here. I also highly hope he doesn't as well.

true, when the colts switched to a 3-4 D last season, Freeney's #'s took a nose dive

Man I've thought Worilds did pretty good this past year. I'm not sure why he has so many doubters. But I know in the end we all hoped to be proven wrong by the guys we doubt. I will take great pleasure in Willy Gay making me like him even though I don't see that happening. I do however foresee a Cortez Allen jersey in my future. But again I could be wrong.

He did and the more he sees the field the better he's going to get. I wouldn't give up a duffle bag full of footballs for Freeney.

Other than Dumervil and his crazy contract, I would do the opposite, I would take Worilds with one leg compared to the leftover scraps of Freeney and JH.

Maybe show you something this year? lol the guy had 5 sacks in the 3 games that he started, Gimpy leg Woodley started in 13 and only got 4 sacks. JH started in 13 games had 6

Worilds to date is more of a one trick pony than wallace was..he can rush the passer...from one side..which is the side woodley mans...he is not solid against the run...doesn't drop into coverage well.....maybe he proves me wrong...I hope he does...but I have seen nothing that shows it will.

The guy had 23 solo tackles last season compared to Woodleys 27 ( lets not forget he only started 3 games).. I'm guessing most of the 23 were on the RB's. I look at the D-line's fault if they can't stop the run, it's team effort, not 1 guys fault . If the guy is having trouble on the right I would put most of the blame on the aging Beard, it's his job to open the doors for our OLB's. If they put Hayward in there more, I bet that side will cause some hell. The Beard is probably getting in the way of Worilds, from getting pushed around like a rag doll .

Your stats are misleading. Worlds had 5 sacks in 16 games. He had 1 in his 3 starts. Of his 5 sacks, 3 came while Woodley was hurt - ergo he was on the left side. I am hopeful, but not at all optimistic about him.

I dont think you can compare Woodley, Harrison, and Worilds stats by number of games. I'm sure Worilds played at some point in every game. But you need to look at how many plays Worilds was on the field for compared to JH and Woodley. As I'm sure Worilds was on the field a lot less than these two. Then compare their stats. If Worilds has 5 sacks in half the snaps JH saw then I think we have something. And his coverage skills can not be any worse the JH, and I think more time on the field will help him with the running game.

That stat was indeed misleading, but 5 sacks is still pretty good for someone playing on and off. The better stat is that he has 10 sacks in his career, playing 1,000 snaps, which is about one full season of starting. He still has to get better, but I believe he will. I recently read an interview where he mentioned that it was all coming together for him mentally, and how that would have an effect on what he can do physically. We know how true that is. Look at the start of Harrison's career. I think at worst he'll be okay, and could wind up being pretty good.

If Woodley can't stay on the field next season and Worilds has a great one, i would dump Woodleys contract and sign Worlids, then draft somebody for the right side. Maybe Worilds works better with Hood instead of the beard, maybe thats why Worilds isn't as good on the right
