I thought about posting this in the draft section, but this little blurb from Adam Schefter has me wondering if Charlie Batch's days are finally over as a Steelers' backup QB. We're apparently wining and dining Tyler Bray, the UT QB, and there is some speculation that he could be viewed as a possible backup to Ben and even his heir apparent. Of course I remember Colbert and Tomlin wining and dining another young QB, Kirk Cousins, last year and that didn't transpire. For the record, I believe the Steelers should consider a QB in the mid to late rounds this year who could possibly be Ben's successor. There is not alot of great QB talent at the top of the draft but there certainly seems to be an abundance of mid to late round talent, like Bray, who have the measurables and the intangibles to develop into quality NFL QBs.

What do you think, is Batch gone in favor of a young QB with potential?

I wans't particularly keen on spending a draft pick on a QB before we signed Gradkowski, I definitely don't want to now. I think next year is the earliest you can draft if you are thinking in terms of Bens replacement. You guys are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle by picking a QB in the late rounds that will be a franchise QB. Our next franchise QB is going to come out of the first round.

I watched a couple Utah games last year and their qb wasn't very impressive.

Gimme a break. Bray is possibly the most talented QB in the draft this year. He may be immature but he can throw a football. Your hatred for anything "Rocky Top" is a little out of hand, lol.

We are talking about 20 year olds right? College students? Party days??? I think you guys need to lighten the reigns a little bit. While I never threw things off of balconies, I could have been cited for public intoxication every weekend walking from bar to bar (my town was literally a bar haven, bar every 20 feet).

I just saw on the home page that Tomlin, Colbert, Haley and Fichtner were all at Tennessee today :herewego: You and steel1031 better brace yourselves, WR's,QB, whooo boy :lolol:

While I've never thrown anything from a balcony, I have pee'd quite a few times from them while intoxicated.

If his imaturity is his only prob, then im find with it, He will set and learn behind Ben for 2,3,4 years anyway, i say if he can make all the throws, and has the intangebles? why not take a chance.:hmmm:

When I was single, every time a girl would break up with me I'd tell myself this exact same thing.

    Oh wait, you said BATCHES.

I am sorry but u r way off. His mechanics suck. He throws off of his back foot all the time. His decision making is questionable. He has a strong arm but his leadership ability sucks. He couldnt take control of his own huddle. That came from a former offesive coach. Its not hatred for rocky top. Its people living here and seeing him 7 days a week on the news. Seeing interviews. Seeing practice and most importantly seeing his off the field troubles

Bray looked good in his his freshman year and started out good his sophomore year but seemed to get worse when he lost Hunter. The broken thumb didn't help much either. I think he's a good choice to sit behind Ben and grow up some and learn.

But Patterson, I hope stays far away from the Steelers. He's trouble just waiting to happen. He's gonna be another diva WR.

To go back to the topic of Charlie being done? At this point they haven't closed the door on him yet...and I wouldnt surprised if they later on sign him to a 1 yr deal and bring in a young guy and let them compete.

Also as someone said...very rarely are you going to find your franchise QB in the mid to late rounds. For the last couple years I'd been hoping they'd select one mid to late to be the new (younger) backup...and hey if he became more of that so be it.

I have said this before but I would bring sunseri into camp. He's a smart qb who doesn't make stupid throws. Dude didn't get a fair shake having a different OC and completely different systems every year he started. Bringing him as an udfa hurts nothing and who knows he may make a decent career back up.

Hey steel if you read my post a few up you'll see that I called for you to come in and back me up. LOL. All I hear around here is how people can't stand Bray but then when you get outside the SEC or the Knoxville bubble you just hear how people think he's awesome. It's kinda like how people that are not big football fans and especially Steelers fans are like "man that Mike Wallace sure is awesome and they're crazy for letting him go" and most of us are laughing and saying "where were you during all those drops?" LOL. Bray looks like a stiff wind would blow him over and if you put a guy like that behind our line and we don't block any better than we have these past few years and he'd be dead.

i got your back.lol listen i argue about alot of stuff and i admit i dont know as much as i think i do on some topics. guys let me tell you. I am not gonna drop names or sound like i am some important guy or anything. i can tell you for a fact that unless this kid gets humble and develops people skills, he is not going to make it in the pros. i know coaches who had him for 3 yrs. i know teammates who played with him. who were in the huddle with him. went to classes with him. i can tell you that this kid feels like he is intitled. he is young i admit, but his actions speak to the kind of man he is going to be. coaches, especially dooley, had no choice but to play him because they were fighting for their jobs. bray did get benched and lost his starting job this past year. he is on record of throwing the kentucky game year before last because him and darick rodgers didnt want to go back to music city bowl. its not that i am anti tennessee. far from it. i just have knowledge of alot of players because of access. this class is overrated and in three years if we take patterson or bray i will be saying i told you so. i am hoping that hunter when he gets away from the influences he had in college can turn it around. he is a good kid from a tough background.

Tyler Bray???? Um... No. The reason that Bray had any success at all at UT is because he was throwing to some damn good WR's. And his OL last year was stellar. Bray has a history of throwing 6 TD's one game then crapping down his leg the next. He is immature, a me-first guy, and above average talent but not superstar talent and not what we want or need to backup or eventually replace Ben. If someone thinks Bray is the best QB talent in the draft this year, then either the QB talent in this years draft sucks balls or you are a crappy judge of talent. Bray is a train wreck. And to the OP, Charlie needs to be put out to pasture.

We'll see if I'm way off or not. He has a great arm, with what, 30 TD's and 10 picks last year?? He has a couple WR's that are headcases according to you, no running game, no O-line and oh yeah, plays in the SEC. He's immature not criminal, big difference. I'd love to draft him.

dude you are just looking at stats. watch the games. look at his mechanics. the wr are headcases but so is he. the oline was built to pass protect. the lack of running game was lack of trying. when they did try to run the ball, tyler pitched a little fit on the sidelines. and to answer you he is criminal. he had community service for running a boat on fort loudon while drinking
