Cowher made playoff runs without a franchise QB before Ben. QB is super important no question but to be this much of a non contender for so many years is unacceptable for the HC.

And it took him a year to do it;) I think we made Playoffs his first season, won SB second season as our HC.

Is common sense allowed in this thread? The problem is the Steelers wasted Ben's last 6 productive years. Losing Shazier was a big part of that. But the other problem was the Tomlin/Colbert regime was going stale. Reaching for Pickett set this team back two years. Art II should have had the sense to move on from Tomlin when he hired Khan/Weidl, but Art II is missing some Dan Rooney DNA. The challenge is to find a QB, and then find a coordinator that knows how to get the most out of that QB. Smith is not a QB guru.

Not many SB's are won without a franchise QB. Ravens probably last winner that did it mostly with their D but it's rare and we have got to somehow get lucky and find one.

In the back of my mind when we got Wilson was he'd pull a Brady and get a SB with another team. Hey, still a chance;)

Cowher made it to many AFC Championships and 1 Super Bowl BEFORE Ben Roethlisberger.

Exactly Tomlin has 1 AFC Championship appearance in the last 14 years and that game was over midway through the first quarter.

This!! Cowher went to the AFCC game with Kordell in 97 and 01. He won a playoff game in 96 with Mike Tomzack starting. He went to an AFCC game with Odonnell in 94 and then a Super Bowl with Neil in 95. Cowher also won a playoff game with Maddox in 2002. This is all before Ben.

Cowher's playoff record with Ben is 5-1 Tomlin's playoff record with Ben is 8-10

Nope, it’s about getting a win along with some confidence going forward. It will take a lot to defeat the Chiefs this year, I’m not sure anyone has the ability at this point.

You're full of crap just like the rest of the whiners in this thread, nobody is going to make a big deal if they beat Houston. Most knowledgeable fans can recognize the team isn't good enough right now.

It was a lot different game back then in today's game you need a franchise QB to win big.

No the HOF QBs were winning then too. Montana, Aikman and Elway etc etc. still doesn’t mean you can’t make a run without a Franchise QB once in a while.

In today's game, thanks to the rules changes, you not only need a QB, but a more offensive minded Head Coach who can develop a QB and implement inventive schemes.

The Defensive Head Coach is quite honestly a dinosaur. Defensive Coaching is mostly about stockpiling talented pass-rushers (GM acquires) and employing them using creative stunts. You need to hit the QB within 1-3 seconds because the QB will take off and the secondary isn't allowed to get as physical with the receivers. Stopping the run is still important.

Offensive and Special Teams coaching is just valued more than defensive coaching. The NFL likes the game to have passing and points.

Any offensive mind worth anything is going to get snatched up for a head coaching job. You more need a Reid or Shanahan in the current NFL than a Tomlin, Cowher, or Belichek, whose schemes are good enough to produce if you lack a Mahomes, Burrow, or Allen.

There was also a lot of Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Jeff Hostetler mixed in there too .

Buffalo has a defensive minded HC and is a Super Bowl contender, Harbaugh was a special teams coach not some offensive mastermind Baltimore is a Super Bowl contender.

And Tomlin had that. Tomlin had Big Ben starting for all of his playoff games. Cowher didn't. That was the point being made.

To be determined if Buffalo is a Superbowl Contender. They have Josh Allen, who can make plays like Big Ben, but it hasn't gotten them very far in the post-season. Lets see if they can get past the Chiefs in the playoffs and go to the Superbowl. Sean McDermott isn't a force multiplier and can be Tomlinesque at times. He is a decent coach that sticks his foot in his mouth at times, just not a great one.

I did include Special Teams coaches in my comment, as they have to coordinate multiple players from other units. Harbaugh is the prime example.

Doesn't negate my point, Offensive Coaches are more valuable than Defensive Coaches given the rules changes favoring the passing game.

It's Buffalo, Baltimore, and Kansas City that are Super Bowl contenders in the AFC, the rest of the teams in the conference are pretenders.
