what an awful missed opp yesterday, with that tipped ball. Just terrible, at a critical point.

this is where we are failing the last few weeks, at those points where PLAYS have to be made, and they are not. on both sides of the ball.

    that said - Pat Queen:

He was the BIG FA Splash. he did not have to be SuperMan, but he had to be better. The way Balt used him was different than the way the Steelers do and he is just pedestrian in our defense. He does not suck but he is not a $15M+ man, either. Khan / Tomlin over-valued him, but that is what you do when you are DESPERATE. that is because we have failed to replace the interior of our defense for SO LONG. Is Queen any better than Spillane? think about that long and hard.....

LOTS of hard conversations coming for Coaches and certain players in January.

The Owner has been FLEECED this year. And the Fans, left to another just above average year, with about the same prospects next year.

Fans love to overhype Spillane because he starts for the Raiders, Spillane couldn't cover me :lolol:.

why - because he starts for the Raiders? Many attribute his success to......brace yourself - to his COACH, A Pierce, who is TEACHING HIM. Imagine that!

He seemingly could start for many teams, BTW.

my point now (and in part was THEN) is that he had a role and could fit here.

you must like the tens of millions we are now WASTING on Queen? This is another Tomlin / Colbert mistake that Khan is having to fix.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I am not seeing many of your THANK YOU threads of late. We were playing the Little Sis's of the Poor early in the year. Now, we are playing NFL Teams......and getting our ASS'S WHIPPED!

That's all Tomin has, he even spoke about it during the game - they're hoping for splash plays, if they don't happen he's lost and so is the game.

Patrick Queen is so much better than Robert Spillane it's silly. I get the point you are trying to make, but cmon now. Starting for a terrible Raiders team doesn't make you good.

Our entire identity is splash plays. Whatever happened to going out and beating the other team, with or without splash plays. Splash plays don't always come against the other top teams in the league.

We used to be a LB factory. It didn't matter who we plugged into the position, they were studs. We haven't had that in a very long time.
Perhaps our usage, scheme and playcalling is the issue.
Spillane goes to the Raiders and plays much better.
Queen comes here and plays much worse.
We just can't seem to find LB'ers anymore.

Exactly, it's because they can't gameplan or out-scheme anyone. They're trying to win 3-4 "moments" in game, not win a game over 60 minutes, and just lately the balls have been bouncing the wrong way, and that's no good when your own team is making error after error.

Queen is the least of the problems on D. Steelers need upgrades at CB and a DT badly. Queen and the ILBs will play better with a better D line.

Well, Spillane's QB rating when targeted is better than Queen's. So there is that. He also has far more solo tackles than Queen and one less pass defensed... oops.

I feel differently. I am tired on our team having to rely on turnovers to win the dang game. Why can’t we be sound enough fundamentally to just methodically move the ball down the field and score touchdowns or on defense just force a three and outs to win the game? Why does it always have to be win the turnover battle? Its awfully risky to rely on that style of football to produce wins. As you have seen from the last three games that style of football often does not work.

I'm with ya. And that's the "old school" method of winning games. Not saying it's wrong, but it's not as effective in today's game.

He starts, albeit for the Raiders, but has had a very solid year. Raiders play in the same NFL as the Steelers, so they aren’t playing worse teams.

Agree, but also think biggest issues are DC and HC. But that's a well known problem that Steelers FO doesn't seem to care enough to fix. At the very least send DC packing and most position coaches and rebuild the D side staff with REAL NFL caliber coaching. Overrule Tomlin and his buddy system if you have to. Give the DC complete autonomy with no Tomlin interference.

Also, a new OL was overdue last year, this year Meyer's firing or letting go is a MUST. Find an OL coach that has actually improved an OL, not made it worse. Look at college and DII if you have to, don't hire an NFL retread/cast-off. Find a diamond in the rough.

A new HC that wants to dominate the other team, not eek by with "just enough" each week.

I’m disappointed in Queen this season. A few nice plays here and there, but less than what we need from our top ILB. He seems often to be slow getting to where he needs to be, and we know it’s not due to a lack of physical speed. Maybe dropping the green dot responsibilities would help.

Spillane is a guy that has "football senses" and acts on them well.
He's not a bad guy to have on your team. Starting is a different thing.

Queen on the other hand does have some nice physical traits.
I don't view him as a problem or even a concern.
The pay scale is borderline. I'd expect a splash play here there just a little more.
He's a guy I'm keeping yet will try to draft players to push or best him.

Queen hasn’t been the impact player we all hoped he’d be and hasn’t lived up to his price tag. And yes, he frequently looks out of position. I’d love to know what the players think about the defensive system…. Do they think it’s holding them back? I’d also like to know how involved Tomlin is…. Does Austin have some things he’d like to implement, but he’s handcuffed?

What I do know is there’s too much money on that side of the ball for them to be putting up the results we’ve seen…. And way too much confusion for this point in the season.

Maybe it isn’t Queen but the scheme and the coaching. Maybe we ask too much of our ILB’s? Maybe we should get bigger Dt’s to gap contain and hold up double team blocks to allow the ILB’s be clean on their way to the gap. Maybe we aren’t coaching them up right in pass coverage. After all how does Minkah and Queen actually digress in this defense?

It's a cop out by Tomlin, it's removing gameplanning, and scheme out of the equation beause they're hard, and just taking the easy option by saying we'll win a nebulous turnover battle and have splash plays instead.

There are football (soccer managers) in Europe who have the same philosophy, they're playing for "moments" in games and just hoping their team takes those opportunities, it's just lazy and a mark of a manager who has very little tactical knowledge doesn't know how to alter games.

Its the same plays, the same sets, the same mis-use of players, the same basic defenses, the same failings on down and distance week after week, season after season.

    The same results.

They have no plan other than the one they openly state.

Yeah Queen is out of position often. I think Devin Bush was like that.

    Hey, maybe it is coaching!
