Do people consider Rod Woodson's legacy tainted after he spent several years with the Ravens?

To be honest with you, sort of. I still loved Woodson as a player but he would have had a better legacy had he stayed in Pittsburgh and moved to safety like the Steelers wanted him to and like he did with the Ravens.

I agree Jack. His legacy is tainted in my eyes for that, but part of that is because it's a reminder of how unsung that team in the 90's was, and what we could have achieved had the FA rules been slightly different, and two passes not gone wayward.

See, not me, I keep forgetting he even played for them (repressed maybe?) I just think of him as a Steeler and his years here.

I agree. Woodson isn't one of my favorite Steelers.

I like guys like Hoge more than I do Woodson. Even though Hoge finished up elsewhere. He left everything on the Three Rivers turf and still talks as if he never left.

Dont forget, the Steelers didn't want Woodson either.

If I remember correctly the Steelers wanted to keep him and move him to safety because they thought he had lost a step after the knee injury. Woodson thought he was still a top flight corner and wanted to be paid like one. He jumped ship and went to the Ravens where (are you ready for this?) the Ravens moved him to safety because he had lost a step after the knee injury.

Yep, that's how I remember it playing out too. He was my favorite Steeler at the time, wasn't to happy we lost him.

    Not exactly how it happened.
Yes they wanted to move him to safety but he didn't want to and wanted to be a CB. And he did ultimately end up in Baltimore at S but he first went to San Fransico where he played CB for year, then to Baltimore where he played CB for a year. It was in his 3rd season after leaving Pittsburgh before he went to S.

That's true, but first he went to SF where he did play CB for a year. How much did he get paid there, and in Baltimore? How much did we offer? I don't know, but given the times, I'm positive he made more in those places than he would have made with us.

Not true and we've discussed this on the board before. He took less money to play in SF and Baltimore and finally Oakland, than he was offered in Pittsburgh and he felt slighted by the Rooneys over that contract dispute.

I can't seem to find the links anymore. Last time this came up I just Googled it and several stories popped up, now i can't find any with numbers attached. Most just say "contract dispute" and "later made ammends with the Rooneys".

I agree too. He should have stayed in Pittsburgh and made the switch to safety. Instead he left only to find out that he needed to switch to safety.

Actually Lizard is right, it was a contract dispute, not a position change dispute. It was the Panthers who were also courting him that wanted him to change positions.

four-year, $7.2 million pact that included a $1 million signing bonus, but in their subsequent offer the Steelers cut the bonus in half. It's in the link above.

That's right, he did go to SF first, but eventually ended up in Baltimore and ultimately the Raiders as a safety. Would have been nice had he simply made the move to safety in Pittsburgh and finished his career in the B&G.

Thanks I posted in the wrong thread. Also found the SI article. IIRC it was a combination of both. They didn't want to pay him top corner money, but wanted to pay him top safety money instead.

He switched several times during the season anyway, especially after injury. Him and Lake just played those positions beautifully!

LOL! Yeah I saw where you had wandered into the wrong thread. Don't you hate it when that happens? :roflmao:

Anyway, do you have a link?

Ok got the SI story. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...36/2/index.htm

Close to the bottom, he tells about the deal Pittsburgh had on the table and the money he got for a one year deal with SF. Then he discusses the "decent" deal he turned down because he wanted more years.

It's clear he actually played for less and only took that one year deal because he didn't have anything alse offered after the injury, proved himself again and signed with Balt.

Thanks for confirming what I remembered. I thought this quote from Woodson was pretty telling and a lot of players ought to heed this advice:

"I hope guys like Jerome Bettis don't make the same mistake Neil O'Donnell made. Money isn't everything. You've got to realize when you're in a good situation."

My head is spinning. My point was that it was also about money, not just position. All I can see is info about what SF paid him versus what Pittsburgh offered. What did Baltimore pay him?

I heard it was in the area of 30 silver pieces.

It all started when Everyone was discussing the thought of James Harrison becoming a raven and how it would tarnish his legacy in Pittsburgh. Then the Rod Woodson comparison was brought up. I said that the Steelers didn't want him either. Just like James Harrison. Jack said it was different because that the Steelers wanted Rod to change positions. I said that the Steelers just didn't want Rod Woodson. And the link that lizard provided confirms this. They lowballed him so much that it's pretty indicative that they didn't want him. And even so the fact that they wanted him to change positions means they did not one him at cornerback. They wanted him to play safety. The bottom line is that the Rod Woodson and James Harrison situations are almost identical regarding playing for the Steelers rival...if it comes to that
