And what makes you think this roster is remotely close to competing for a championship not only based upon the results of the past two weeks but the past five seasons? This team is more pretenders than competitors

 

I agree, precisely why they need to be sellers. The young core is worth building upon.

 

We lost to teams with franchise QB’s. And the Super Bowl will be won by a team with a franchise QB.

We are competitive because we have a pretty good roster from top to bottom at OL, DL, LB, DB, RB, TE and 1WR. We have talent at each of those positions. And we have a good QB who is 35 and past his prime. And a coach who communicates very well with his players. Put all that together and the Steelers are a good team that will make the playoffs, and lose in the playoffs in the 1st or 2nd round.

What we are not going to do is win the Super Bowl or even reach the AFC Championship game because we lack a franchise QB. Plain and simple. San Fran has an even better roster than us, mostly because they sucked for so long that they accumulated lots of Top 5 and Top 10 picks (which the Steelers never have). And yet they can’t win a Super Bowl with a serviceable QB.

I’m not complaining abut this issue. Just stating the facts.

I said 2 weeks ago that these 3 games would tell us whether the Steelers were really good and SB contenders, or just good enough to make the playoffs. Even if the Steelers lost, they could not be blown out to be considered really good. Well we have been non-competitive in the 2nd half of both games.

We are probably 2 drafts away from looking for a franchise QB. Until then we should expect the Steelers to be competitive enough to make the playoffs, maybe win a division but ultimately can’t complete with the Chiefs, Bills, Eagles, Ravens, Lions (I know Lamar isn’t great against Pitt but he is against the rest of the league). This sucks but it is still better than 80% of the NFL.

Depending on development, we may be passed up in 2 years by the Broncos, Texans, Commanders. This is a QB league and we lack a franchise QB.

 

Honest question here, then why keep guys like Watt and Fitzpatrick on this roster when you can get 1st round capital for both and build a better overall roster?

Pittsburgh needs to decide what the goal is and accept the repercussions of the answer.
Stay with this roster and keep plugging in adequate QB’s and we will continue to win 8-10 games because MT won’t let this roster suck. He is too good to lose 15 games.

Break the roster down and trade Watt, Minkah, Pickens for high draft picks and we likely suck for years before finding the correct QB in the draft (it’s not happening via trade or free agency).

So are Steelers fans going to accept winning 1-4 games per year to be bad enough to get the right QB and build a competitive roster? The Lions did that over 20 years. All of today’s top teams except the Ravens suffered through some lean years to be bad enough to draft a franchise QB. That does not happen with the 20th pick unless a team gets extremely lucky and luck is a bad strategy.

 

Call me greedy, but I want to have the next dynasty in this sport. And to get there it begins and ends with a franchise QB. Until we find that guy, this is what we got. I'm not against being run first/defense style of football; but this current roster isn't even built for that despite having some pieces and to me that's a major problem.

The fact that most years the best team in the league doesn't win it all. Our team is good enough to beat the better teams in the league. You could make a cogent argument that Tomlin isn't likely to lead a team to a SB in today's NFL, but this football team (overall roster) is good enough to win it all. It's not the best chance in the league, but there is only a small handful of teams I think have a better chance than we do (Det, Philly, KC, Buf).

If every team that had a roster like ours decided to blow it all up there would be like 5-6 teams in the whole league that aren't in the middle of a complete rebuild.

 

You’re kidding, right? If healthy, we can beat anyone. We are maybe a wide receiver and a cornerback away from being one of the best teams in the league.

 

Are draft picks guaranteed to be as good or better than what you’ve traded away?

 

Did you even read the post about not blowing it up just add a few players here and there. We also said we know that the Rooney won't get rid of Tomlin but Tomlin needs to make changes of coaches at both OC and DC. We know Tomlin not getting fired but we also know that we can't continue with the highest paid defense in the league and playing like we do. That is what matters.

The offense has a new group on the OL, a totally new QB room, hired a legit NFL OC, and increased the number of assistant coaches. Sounds like rebuilding.


The defense has made the secondary a priority and brought in FAs this past offseason and signed FA ILB Queen to help with run support. Not rebuild but still building.


What else should be done? Looks to me like 'we' are doing it.

Why would you trade away all-pro caliber players for draft picks in the hope of drafting all-pro caliber players?

 

I agree. But with chances of winning a Lombardi this year or next is slim to none, getting younger and cheaper could be attractive. The huge investment in D really hasn't paid off.

 

Where we currently sit with injuries and our young OL, I agree this year is slim to none. I do not think next season is slim to none. There are moves to be made but this team has been in front of the division all season. Next season looks very hopeful.

Many here, many times have said Rooney will never get rid of Tomlin. Have you ever heard that.?

 

we have a Franchise QB - end of his career, but we have one. Ben was that, late in his career. Other 'late in their career' Franchise QB's, have won SB's. Brady and Manning, most recently.

We might not be able to with Tomlin (and our coaching in general.....) - THAT is the bigger problem. Tomlin would muck it up w Mahomes, I am afraid to say.....

fix the o-line and it helps the whole team. gives russ time. keeps the D fresher. keeps the oppositions qb on their bench. we wouldn't rely on FG's always. that alone would solve a great deal of problems.

 

I agree. McCormick and Fautanu are 24. Jones and Frazier are only 23. And if Moore leaves, no doubt they will add another OL in the draft. These guys are so young yet.

 

This is the NFL which fortunately has a salary cap. As such, most teams don't have depth and when a key player goes down, the dropoff to the back-up is significant. Some teams have a strong enough QB-WR tandem to overcome other deficiencies. The Steelers had what I'd consider a lower 1st tier tandem in Wilson-Pickens. Without Pickens, defenses don't have to double team anyone and our offense becomes much simpler to defend. That's just life in the NFL. If Mahomes or Kelce go down, the Chiefs are a much easier offense to defend.

I don't think there's any reason to blow up this team. Let's get our guys healthy and back in the line-up, then see what they do in the playoffs. In the offseason, resign Wilson, and then shore up our weaknesses with draft picks and FA signings. I'd say our areas of greatest need will be RB, WR and Dline.
