A few years ago the Steelers did something they never did much of, and they started paying players in order to keep the the team on top. Some spoke of it then, but winning usually cures any criticism you hear. The team played well, but people got older and the new players taken in the drafts who were supposed to take over have either not performed well, or simply played themselves outta town because the bank was broken years ago. Looking at today's cuts and rumors that have surfaced it appears we simply can't pay those we drafted as they turned into what the FO had hoped they would. With a cap of 123 million I never thought we would be watching part of " Young Money" leave, or possibly lose a good DB since we have had issues with that position for nearly a decade simply because we can't pay them? Walllace at 12 mill a year is absurd, but replacing him with a draft pick , and Plax doesn't sound great , especially if Sanders walks too. Lewis leaving is yet to be seen, but we signed Foote because its all we can afford when there are others who could do better, but once again we have nothing to offer to sign them. Money may not always make you happy, and an NFL team that spends a lot does not always mean a team will win, but watching the FO scramble to make up for deals 3 years ago when those players have gone just hurts to watch. I don't think we will turn into the lower tier NFL teams by any means, but greed from seasons past is what we are playing with next year and beyond

The other thing to consider about this is back years ago...the cap was expected to be much higher now than it is...the new CBA kind of changed things and the Steelers plus many other teams are hurting. Not saying this is the ONLY reason...but it is a part of it also. Teams take chances all the time sometimes they work out sometimes not. The only FA this year I'd be concerned with is Lewis...and we'll have to wait and see what happens...anyone else? I could care less about.

THe thing that really sticks in my craw is Big Ben our franchise QB who needs some support in the offense and the Steelers don't seem to be able to get him that at running back or wide reciever. I really don't expect much from the Steelers this year until they do something to correct the cap mess they are in. Seems like not only the old are leaving but the young right along with them. Will be interesting to see how this team turns out after the draft.

what are you talking about? he had some of the best weapons in fotaball. wallace, brown, and sanders. throw in heath. mendy was a first round pick. i would say the front office tried real hard to et him support. now i am not saying they are hall of famers but it was good enough

The Steelers did something similar following the 2001 season. Remember, they finished 13-3 that year, and I remember in the offseason, the team signed almost everyone to long-term deals, and wanted to keep the team intact. Well, in 2002, Kordell took a step back, the defense was a sieve, and a year later the whole thing blew up. But they turned it back around.
