Did we explore this option with Harrison?

Trading him? The Boldin trade got me to thinking about that. Boldin's situation was similar to Harrison's in that he was under contract and was going to need to take a paycut to stay with the team. The Rats got a 6th round pick for him. Why couldn't we have simply traded JH for a 5th or 6th rounder and at least gotten something of value for him?

amazing.. when i heard about boldin i thought hte same thing.. and like we got a 5th for holmes when he was the MVP super bowl champ.. and the bungals got a first and second for carson palmer that wasnt even playing. i think we always get the worst part of a trade..

Boldin had a good year, especially in the playoffs, and showed he can still be a dominant player in the league. Harrison struggled and has had some injury problems the last couple years. There probably wasn't a market for Harrison. According to what I heard on Sirius NFL, there was barely a market for Boldin.

exactly. i dont think Harrison would of gotten a 6th round pick in return. the Steelers did the only thing they could do and it was the right move. they had 2 choices with Harrison. he either took a huge pay cut or release him. any other teams around the league that had interest in Harrison probably knew this and figured he will be available sooner than later and why waste a pick on him.

now the Steelers need to make a few other tough decisions. i think Hampton, Keisel, Batch, Lefty and Foote all need to be released as well.

the Steelers can be a contender next year if they stay healthy and the young guys step up, but if they plan on keeping all those old guys they will have another season like last year. they are not in the same situation as the Jets are in, but they are still in a bit of a rebuilding mode and they need to start it sooner rather than later.

I think the answer is twofold. 1. As stated by others, the market may not have been there. 2. I think they want to bring him back after he tests the market and doesn't find the big bucks he may be expecting.

I would normally post here and say nobody is going to trade for James with his current contract! But I would've said the same about Boldin, so who knows.

Question from a cap dummy here! View attachment 361 Now the JH is gone and assuming he doesn't come back how much would the Steelers still owe him if anything? And does still go against the cap?

While I agree, there are things that come into play. We expressed our intent on trading or cutting him. We hung ourselves out to dry and teams knew they could lowball us as we were getting rid of him one way or another. The Vikings said Harvin wasn't for sale and they had no interest on getting rid of him. That alone gave them much better bargaining power than we had.

Then there's the fact that Harvin is a far better player than Holmes, and it's not even close. Holmes was a Superbowl MVP, I'll give him that, but Harvin is one of the top players in the league, especially when you take into account he can rush the ball from the backfield, line up in the slot, line up out wide and is electric in special teams play. The guy truly does it all and any attitude problems are related to his current situation and will probably be resolved with a change of scenery. Holmes had some issues off and on the field and had nothing to do with situation, so teams likely expected his baggage to follow him to where ever he went (which it did).

Good question, I wish we had of and maybe we did, and maybe teams in the league knew we were absolutely not going to pay him what he wanted so they waited us out.

stealers saved 5,5 milion vs the cap and eat all the remaining sb they gave him that count like 5 milion , the team doesn't owe anything

Generally the Steelers don't operate like that in most cases. Yes there MAY not have been a huge market/etc...but generally the only time they trade a guy is if its a troubled player they want to wash their hands of (Holmes). Most of the time they'll just cut them and let the player find their new team on their own.

Exactly. and its a thing of respect to the players and that's a big thing around the league. Also there was probably not much of a market for James trade wise since all teams new we were against the cap and would either cut his pay or cut him. Why trade for some-one who's gonna be a FA shortly anyway.
