That does sound like a punt return option if Austin can't go. Patterson was a dynamic kickoff returner for much of his career, but he has only returned one punt in the NFL. (That really surprised me.)

Interesting signing. Would be nice as a KR option because Patterson has looked awful so far… Slow and poor vision. But he’s not going to be coming off the roster. Austin seemed fine, so I’d be surprised if he wasn’t good to go this week. Not sure how they’d work Agnew in, if they have any plans to.

Patterson looks like he lost a step on KR from what he once was.

Agreed. I think I mentioned on the game day thread that he looked like he was running in mud on one return against the Commanders.

The rule change makes it a lot harder. You more need a bullet who can hit full speed in 2 seconds, as well have vision to hit "x" hole.

I didn't see Austin's head getting anywhere near the ground or hit, so I was unclear as why the NFL called down to have him removed from the game last week???

So, we finally have a punt returned for a TD, and the Steelers FO decides to bring in someone to replace him to make sure that never happens again??? :)

steelers also worked out two guys that can play safety or some corner. rowe was here last year and played well for us.

could be making sure they cover their butts just in case. this way he's already learning our system before we start this stretch run. pretty smart i would say.

He’s literally had something like 3 good plays in 1 1/2 years

Probably need a good insurance option in case Austin can't go. I don't even know anyone else on our roster that has returned punts outside of Cam Sutton, and he only did so in college.

Agreed. I was disappointed they didn't re-sign him in the offseason.

Good point. Patterson has returned one punt in his NFL career. Given how productive he has been as a kickoff returner in his career, that makes me thin he is not comfortable or struggles to field the ball on punts. Scott Miller has one punt return in his career, too.
