To close to the there end zone. Could have lost the game because of it. They scored a TD. They lose and its the biggest talking point today. Punt it!

And some still liked that call so much even if they lost because of it

i can see that perspective. very big gamble, Tomlin was trying to ride some early momentum.

but to say 'even if they lost because of it' - I will disagree. You don't lose because of a mistake in the first 5 mins of a game.

you make adjustments accordingly and score points.

The Commando's bumbled their way thru TO's also.

It was a great call. They had been practicing the play all week which means the coaches noticed something on tape. They got the look they expected, but dropped the ball. It happens. I have absolutely no problem with the call or when/were it was called. They discovered an advantage and tried to put it to use.

they left our gunner uncovered, its a no brainer, its not like they dont practice that situation. Field position had nothing to do with it, if we execute, meaning if we catch the ball, its an east 1st down.

I don’t like that they did it so deep in their own territory. Do it up around their own 35 and I wouldn’t have a problem with it. They could have easily lost the game on that decision. They gifted them a tie touchdown.

Let’s say they got the first down, what “advantage” does having a first down at your own 30 get you? Why are people assuming it would have made a huge positive impact?

Steelers already had momentum as they were leading at the time.

Yes. Why? I take it that you think giving up a gifted tying TD there had no impact on the game?

Not at all. I just know that you would be bitching about it whether it was on our 15, 35, their 35 etc.

Well it does give you 3 more downs. Which gives you the opportunity to keep the drive going and possibly score more points. Is that advantageous?

I would normally **** all over this call, but obviously Danny saw something and took advantage of it. You can't gameplan for a dropped pass.

No reason to do that so close to your own endzone. If they saw something on tape that they felt they could exploit then save it for a better situation. Yes, I understand with that field position they will be less prepared for a fake punt. Don’t care.

Even if successful you still have to drive the length of the field to capitalize off it. Save it for when it would be more advantageous for you.

You know I agree to a point. But you lose me on the location where they tried it. Now there may have been a defensive reason to call that there. Maybe when the opposing team punts the Redskins turn and run to try to set up a return? But man that's tough call so close to your own goal line. But we won so on we go!

Is that enough to warrant the risk?

I don’t think the “possibly score more points” is worth the risk in this particular case given the score, field position, etc.

I didn't love the call, but I liked it. I would have preferred to save it for a more critical situation is my biggest gripe with it. I was surprised at Dan Quinn's reaction to it on the sideline. He seemed to be laughing a celebrating. If I'm the head coach I'm giving my special teams coach the death stare at that point. He was outsmarted and just got lucky.

It's really a auto call ..The up back makes the call when the gunner is uncovered ..It's not like the Defense blized from that spot they simply didn't even have a man in that area.

I have repeated several times over how I like the call but did not like it with that situation. Running a fake punt on your own 15 yard line that early in the game is down right stupid kind of like your dumb post saying you know how I think.

Turnovers are accidents. A fake punt on your own 15 is on purpose.

Can someone give me a highlight reel of Tomlins successful trick plays. I feel like in 18 years I can’t think of any. Cowher excelled at them and there is probably a 3 hour movie on the ones that worked. Did they all work for Cowher no of course not but he was probably 70%. I think Tomlin has about 1 out of 100.

Let's not forget that it wouldn't have just been a first down, but a huge gainer, maybe even a touchdown. Pierre only had one or two guys to beat and a lot of open grass. Probably picks up at least 20 or 30 yds there.

This fake punt was not a trick play. It’s an automatic call that every team has when a gunner is uncovered.

I coach basketball and I tell my kids all the time that the back door cut when you are being defended 22 feet from the basket is not a play, it is an automatic regardless of what play was actually called. This is the same thing.

The fake punt is it was run on Sunday is not a good example of a Tomlin decision to run a trick play.

You have to remember actions speak louder than words. You make that claim now. However, your track record of posting illustrates a different story.

It is a tough call, but we caught them napping, tried to take advantage of it, and Pierre dropped the ball. How many times a week on this board are people complaining about Tomlin being too conservative? Only wants to win close games or whatever other bullcrap they dreamt up that day? Now those very same people are complaining about being aggressive. You don’t get it both ways. With that being said you know damn well this thread wouldn’t even exist had Pierre caught it. Want proof look at Boswell botched fake field goal attempt from a couple years ago. It didn’t work that time and the very same people complaining today were complaining then. So right about now you’re thinking yeah so? Well those same people weren’t complaining when boz threw a td to big al the year before on a fake fg. The point is they just want to complain and will do so no matter what despite the fact we beat a quality opponent
