Preston Smith to Pittsburgh

Tomlin today said he has a chance to play along with dirty red, Trice, Frazier, and Patterson. Once the practice reports come out it we will have a better idea how close he is.

I am sure they would like to reduce the workload of Watt and Highsmith but still have an effective rush.

 

I heard Dulac today on SNR say he didn't think Herbig will be back for the Commanders game FWIW, he said Herbig is likely to return for the Ravens game.

 

Watt and Highsmith could use a reduction in their workload, remember on the Giants last drive both of them were on the sideline at the end.

 

look there is no point to in having discussions about what we could have done. I maybe unlike alot of fans around here but I have complete faith in the front office. Khan to me has once again made an impact on this team. He made the Steelers better today and that is the goal.

Preston Smith has been a very good player for a long time, almost all of that time playing outside linebacker. The Packers asked him to be more of a 4-3 end this season and that hasn't worked out well, which is probably why they moved him. You really should do more research before you post.

 

Exactly. Don't trust Dulac on anything. He has ruined his credibility the last few years.

 

I like the addition and for a 7th rounder was a no brainer. They let him go I believe due to his contract skyrocketing in 2025. So probably just a rental for depth as we have seen they cannot have garbage depth behind such an important position. Herbig and Smith round it out.

Yep. Smith is a good pickup for depth, but Steelers needed a DE more than they needed a OLB.

 

Agreed, but I'm not sure one was available at a price they like.

I wonder if we will see three outside linebackers on the field together some against the Ravens. They have done it in the past to help compensate for Jackson's athleticism. If they are going to do that, having four good outside linebackers would be important.

If he has anything left, will be a much needed depth signing. They may be able to use him blitzing from inside?

 

I was surprised that Leal even made the 53 man roster this season, the man has done nothing since he's been here.

 

He started all 17 games and led the Packers with eight sacks in 2023, his third consecutive season with at least eight sacks. I don't doubt he has slowed a little since his 12-sack season in 2019, but he can still play. The Packers switched to a 4-3 defense, forcing him to play out of position, which is what led to diminished production and Smith requesting a trade. At the very least, he should replace what they lost when Markus Golden retired.

 

Leal can't get off of IR and on the actual playing field long enough to be counted on.


Loudermilk is still 3rd on the depth chart and not supposed to be in the starting lineup getting starting minutes.


Herbig is a hair on fire, non stop motor kind of player. Just not big enough for that role yet. Look back at rookie Highsmith physically vs today. I hope to see that much change with Herbig as well in year 3.


Preston Smith, even with as much as he has dropped off, is a better option than all 3 of the players I listed. It was a good move and a needed move.
