That horrible commish has done his job tremendously. He has grown the NFL from a $7B business to $21B and he gets paid more than Patrick Mahommes and Joe Burrow combined.

The Deebo(Harrison), Hines Ward, and Brady rules have definitely pansified the nfl.

 

If anyone is watching the Lions/Packers, you saw Branch get kicked out for an UR penalty. Granted, he probably, rightly, questioned the ref's family tree and threw in some "Yo Mama" jokes. If these rules had been in place in the 70s, no team would ever be able to finish a game. All their players would be ejected!

If the officials were penalized(monetary) like the coaches and players.You would instantly notice better officiating.

 

I miss the ole days but I’ve begun to say that about almost everything.

I guess I'm considered an old head. Started with the Steelers in '69. And, I must say, that, not only have the players style of play changed but the coaches, rules, pay, broadcasting, knowing about players and coaches personal lives, and officials.The standards and ethics are definitely not the same. I've seen this sport go from the clashing of gladiators to flag football entertainment. And even with all of these new rules ... I still see player's seasons end with injuries.If not at the same rate ... with an even higher rate than back in the day.

 

It's one thing to change rules that ultimately change the game from what it was years ago, it's another to enforce them consistently from game to game. That's where the NFL and it's officials fall on their face.
The missed facemask against Sam Darnold and then tonight, a clear blow to his head that was not called(there was actually a flag thrown that was eventually picked up) are two of the more egregious errors off the top of my head.
Clearly, the officials have zero idea how to identify roughing the punter/kicker.

The NFL is supposed to be the final frontier of masculinity for team based professional sports. It isn't meant to be some friendship circle.

Last year of the top 100 rated TV shows the NFL was responsible for 99 of them.

While the NBA and the NHL TV ratings are at an all time low, the NFL is going to play games this year on every day but Tuesday.

There is a reason every city in America boos him at every draft or event he attends. That doesn’t mean he is bad at marketing the sport just that he is ruining the rules.

 

I firmly believe that the time frame that you think had the “best” NFL football corresponds to either the time that you first fell for the game or the time when your team had its greatest success.

If you think the ‘90 had the best football? You were probably born in the ‘70s or early ‘80s.

I started watching pro football in the mid 60s, loved it. But teams played on tore up fields shared with baseball and college FB teams in rotting old stadiums with horrible drainage. Today’s game is faster, more athletic, and more sophisticated than ever. Nostalgia across all aspects of life makes people yearn for an idyllic past that never existed.

 

I understand some of the rules because of head injuries and the long term effects of head injuries. But the NFL has gone way overboard in trying to legislate injury out of the game and also making it nearly impossible to play efficient defense in the league. If I believed the NFL were implementing some of these rules truly for the health of the players and their safety I may have an easier time accepting some of these rules but it is quite evident this is not about player safety but more about NFL greed and being beholden to TV Revenue and viewership. The NFL understands two things.

1. Stars bring viewership
2. Offense sells

As a result they have implemented rules to protect stars like Patrick Maholmes to ensure he plays every game because if he doesn’t then tv viewership goes down. They also have implemented rules such as PI and roughing the passer etc. to both protect thee guys that are responsible for scoring and limit Defenses from controlling the game. Its very unfortunate because the NFL caters to the casual fan and no longer the football purist you have a watered down product that is losing its integrity and roots of what it was meant to be. If you have a good OC, a good QB and two good WR’s you have a darn good chance of winning alot of games in the NFL.

The other issue is because of the greed of the NFL they are on the verge of oversaturating the market with the product. They want to add games and extend the season and it is on now nearly every night of the week. At some point a loss or a win won’t matter that much. It was the one thing they had over the other major professional sports and they are going to lose it.
