I think it's really unfair to label Franklin as a bad coach. PSU doesn't not get the same recruiting classes as Ohio State.
Hell Ohio State is the only team outside of the coastal states that does get great recruiting every year. This is college football.....not the NFL....where it's a even playing ground. Anyone that has watched college football knows this.

 

Imagine that. Not winning anything with Vanderbilt. How many HCs have won a Championship with SC, Razorbacks, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi St just to name a few. All college football programs aren't the same.

 

I think you are correct, sometime recently it was stated PSU would have made a 12 team playoff 6 or 7 times on the last decade, and the results would likely be the same. Nationally a perennial top 8-15 team, sometimes a bit higher, but will be hard to get to a championship game. In terms of about 130 FCS schools, that's not bad, but it sure gets old being almost good enough.

 

It's hard, but it's recruiting. PSU doesn't recruit yearly like Ohio State, and mostly coastal states do.
For example PSU has 0 five star recruits, and Ohio State has 5.

 

OSU also has one of the largest NIL 'banks' in the country. for a few years Franklin had one of the best (on paper) recruiting classes in the country, Getting them and keeping them (transfer portal) is getting harder with the deep NIL pockets.
