i sayd because i would sign lewis that is younger and i would use the next season as a rebuilding step , don't care if we go 5 11 , clark and ike will be gone in a couple of years so why not now that can give more cap relief that you can roll over in 2014 ? i would cut all the players that are not part of the future , is the first step to build the future

Thanks TTF, looking at the cap chart, even makes more angry with Woodley and his shape and play. How could he collect that size of a paycheck and look himself in the mirror and not work to be the best he could be..

People keep saying to dumpt this player or that player (dumping Clark would be a HUGE mistake) but forget that we have to fill that dumped players position with someone else. There is no promise that dumping one player for another is going to save all this money that people are hoping for and then you have to look at who you are dumping versus who you are gaining. Tough position but one that a number teams are in or will be in soon!

So what if the Bengals are under the cap they have a average qb and can't win a playoff game.

100% impossible this year unless we cut Harrison, Ike, Troy, Clark, Keisel and Colon - and forget about re-signing anybody. We are stuck - at minimum - restructuring Ben and Timmons. I've done the spreadsheet work, and it looks grim. Even restructuring Ben, Woodley and Timmons, and releasing Harrison we still don't have cap space to sign anyone - maybe Lewis if the guaranteed money is minimal.

Let's see if this will post OK... this is from my spreadsheet. I made it this week, so I am still verifying some of the younger players' numbers - especially A. Brown

By the way, the dead money in what I just posted was a placeholder. I think the real number is around 580k as it currently stands. Also, here is a great resource that shows each players' contract details (although I can't vouch for it being 100% accurate)

    Good stuff, Elvis.

The current dead money figure I have is $597,780. I'm on the road right now so I can't upload all my numbers, but will do so when I get a chance later.

Here is the link to the steelers salary cap page on steelers depot.

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2012/12/steelers-2013-salary-cap-numbers/

By restructuring Woodley, TImmons, and Ben we would save roughly 18.5 mill. By cutting Harrison (i'm not really in favor of this unless we are going to take an OLB in the 1st rd) and Colon we would save another 6.25 mill. We also have around 3 mill of unused cap space to roll over from last season. These moves would save us approximately 27.75 mill and based on our current cap situation and the estimated cap number for the 2013 season we would be around 11-13 mill under the cap.

I'm sure there will be other moves made also. One could be at CB. If we can get Keenan Lewis signed to a long term deal i expect Ike to get cut. Keenan is looking for a 5 yr 35 mill deal, which we could get away with around a 3 mill cap hit for the 2013 season. If they got this deal and cut Ike they would basically cancel each other out with cutting Ike saving roughly a little over 2.5 mill. I think we will be in position to be able to sign a couple free agents (obviously not to huge deals). I'd love to get a RB (especially Steven Jackson) in free agency. I think we could get a top guy for around 3 mill for the 2013 season, since veteran RB's don't cost a lot. Also would love to get a mid level guard or ILB .

I thought Heath looked like a pretty good red zone threat the minute we actually tried using him that way.

Plus, it's not like we've been paying him $8 million per year forever. That's just the cap hit this year. His 2nd contract gave him $5.88M per year. His rookie contract was worth $1.38M per year. Put all that together and that's $29 million since joining the league. He's played 8 years. That's about $3.6 million per year so far. Now, I don't feel like looking up how much of that 2nd contract was already paid, but if it's backloaded, that means we haven't even paid that much and so we're giving more now. That's how it goes.

I guess it all depends how much you do or don't value the tight end position. I value it a lot when the guy is Heath Miller. I think he's a bargain.

As for his injury, we'll see what happens. But we know he can recover from injury well, we know he's an extremely hard worker, and we know that the time table and his position work more in his favor than against. Will he be Heath of old week 1? I don't know. Will he be Heath of old again at some point this season? I think so.

Can't argue against his performance in the red zone this season. Wish we had ANY other target down there. We miss Hines. I'm hoping Plax gets his legs back, has a nice camp, and serves as another option this season.

I'm less concerned about what we were paying him in his prime and more concerned about what we're paying him now and moving forward.

Unless he'll be hindered by his injury, he's in his prime right now. What is he, 30? That's not bad for a tight end, especially one who was never a burner to begin with.

I'm not guaranteeing he'll go all Adrian Peterson for us, but I don't think it's unrealistic to expect him to return to form this season and moving forward. I just hope he doesn't re-tear his same knee.

i love clark but if we have to clean the cap i would start with players that in the next future (2014) will not be here
basically i'm not thinking of value of the players but at their ages , if we have to rebuild a franchise you need cap room and good draft picks , and you can take one year of reassemblement , ,clark will be free agent next season and his 33 noe and 34 then , do yo think they will sign clark then , if yes then they could extend him now lowering his cap , but i think this is the last season so why not clean his cap one year before and try a young safety ? because we should be a contender next season ??????????????, with all the new young picks playing ?

clark was an example of course you can keep him till the end of his contract , but if you need room you don't cut people like cortez allen ...

If it was up to freak we would field a team full of nobody's just so we can have room under the cap. I personly could care less how much they pay somebody, not coming out of my pocket. They have trained experts to deal with the cap issues, people that know a heck of a lot more than any of the arm chair general managers here.

The more I think about this I think I can kind of maybe understand where some think Clark is a wise cut. That is as close as I can get to the thought, however. Not only is he one of the best defenders we have but, to me, he is kind of the heart and soul of the defense, right now. We cut some hearts and souls last year and I think it would be way to soon to do it, again, especially if there is flux in the locker room.
