Found this at the end of another story I was reading, very disappointing, I knew it was a bad injury but never thought it was career ending. Poor kid, career may be over before it ever started.

"Colbert said that linebacker Sean Spence has not recovered from his horrific knee injury from last preseason “and quite honestly, we have to keep our fingers crossed that he does have a recovery. That will be determined over the next few months.” A source close to the team said the Steelers have grave doubts about Spence’s recovery and that Larry Foote will be re-signed.

I hate to say it: I feared this would be the case the night it happened.

Such a shame. I was really looking forward to seeing how he fit in our scheme. I loved the way he flew around the field at Miami and was a tackling machine.

The Steelers have done something to an ancient Indian burial ground. That's the ONLY explanation for what we've went through recently. Seriously they need to get the lady from Poltergeist to come and set this straight. I am so sick at my stomach over the condition of this team right now. I wanna win and I wanna win now.

kind of figured this was the case....his knee got bent like Dante Culpeppers....

Quite a shame, we will be hurting for a MLB now for sure. Do we draft one or sign one?

I heard somewhere that Erin Henderson would be a good signing?

i saw the same thing but didn't say he was done forever. i read just doubtful for 2013 season. we also have to remember heath tore his up pretty bad too. i'd be very suprised if he plays much and at what level next year.

i did like the aquisition of brian rolle though. he is a spence type of player with starting ability. he was tough at OSU. i can't believe they want to go back to larry foote and sylvester. we should be able to find someone for that type of money. looks like we will give up james harrison to keep the same old crap.

We going back to a 4-3?

Is Stevenson Sylvester EVER going to step up?

I always thought Keyaron Fox was going to take that spot. He always seemed to dominate in the preseason and play fairly well when called upon during the regular season too. The home game against Favre's Vikes sticks out to me. I thought he would be Foote's heir-apparent. Guess I was wrong on that one.

I just looked him up to see where he is these days. After one year with the 'Skins, he's now a Texan. I always thought he was homegrown. I had no idea he was on Kansas City for four years prior to coming to the Burgh.

While I too was looking forward to see what this kid can do...we may have to wait until the 2014 season (if he does recover and continues playing). And while it would be nice to have some younger blood in the line up...if Foote comes back and plays decent like this past year I have no problem with him being in there one more year.

i think we can do better. larry was dead last in a couple of catagories important for lb'ers even with the tackles he does make. yards after contact was last. missed tackles was another and pass coverage. he knows the defense though. i hope rolle shines. i've just never been a big larry foote fan.

Heath's injury pissed me off! He took a cheap shot to that knee right before he had his injury. No question that shot made him susceptable to that!

Mac, you have to factor in his understanding of the D and keeping everyone else in the right spots/responsibilities. That we be even more important as we get younger. I like Foote for one more season to transition the torch to a younger guy.

I want to see how Sio Moore weighs in and how many reps he does on the bench. The only questions that I have about his are wether he has the size to hold up inside in the NFL. Other than (maybe) size and raw strength, he has it all - physically and mentally. He may be my guy in R3 or 4.

We are in a very precarious position if Spence is not able to go.
Foote, is not the answer. Sly will be cut. This clouds my draft strategy.
a little bit. Oh well we shall see what happens.

So if he doesn't come back until 2014, he will play his first game after 2 years off from competitive football...can you say write him off and go in another direction?

The Steelers will approach this the way they always approach needs. They will go bargain basement in the UFA world, either signing guys with potential who are young and haven't stepped up yet, or guys who have excelled on special teams only and they hope they pick up our D and are successful.

The MO for this team has always been to go into the draft not NEEDING any particular position. The year we drafted Pouncey, they had a center they were "happy" with. So happy they didn't plan on Pouncey starting or cutting that center after camp. They will do that again this year. They will sign some cheap UFAs to solidify the options further clouding draft day, but in the end the player we do get will positively impact the team assuming he stays healthy.

spence's situation is unfortunate, and I feel bad for the kid, but I pretty much expected it. He broke or tore nearly everything than you can tear in a knee. I really like him and hope he can come back to us, but the sad truth is that the injury is career threatening, and we need to look elsewhere for the answer at the position.... hopefully, he can recover eventually and provide great competition and depth in the future.

Terrible luck for him and us. I liked a lot of our picks last year, and he was the fun wild card. The one I wasn't sold on but couldn't wait to see what he could do. Now I just hope he gets to play again.

Drafting one is no help to us this year. It takes ' 3 yrs' to learn the system. WHY are the Steelers in such a position that they are desperate for a linebacker? The steelers are a LB factory and now we have nothing in the works. And the ones we do have are avg at best. Where is the next beast? I dont know who to hang this one on but somebody dropped the ball.

Exactly. Foote has NEVER been spectacular...but he's been dependable in his role. Stats are not everything...he was the best player on D in a few games this past year.

i wonder if johnson will be back? this would be his 2nd year in this defense. he should come cheap. rolle is a seasoned spence. i still look for him to make some noise. the ilb spot in this draft is weak. we may see mcfadden, rolle, foote and timmons as the 4. kion wilson was a young pickup too. the cupboard isn't completely bare.

If we don't have someone who can step up and replace Foote the cupboard is bare. Foote is not the answer not even temporarily. Say all you want about his numbers and tackles ,he is a weakness and liability in this defense.
