No one else wanted him. Got him for a sawbuck. The Steelers took a chance seeing potential but also being cautious. I can't see 50 mill + after one season with us. Could franchise him at the cost currently at 38 mill which could go up. Provided he keeps the arrow pointing upward. He guides this offense deep in a playoff run then the 50+ can be discussed.

Its only game 4. I like what I see from the kid but its still early in the process.

carolina could make him offers. we could end up with nothing at the end of the year except maybe another non-losing season and have to give up a 4th round pick. long way to go, with a brutal schedule coming up.

heck we could end up with no 4th, no QB's, a 35 year old RB, a couple of WR's in their final year, but hey we got friermuth.

 

What leverage do we have to sign him at the end of the year? Is he a free agent? If he is he will definitely go where the biggest offer is. After seeing some of these QBs sign huge deals he will be offered a lot of money. Not sure the Steelers are going to pony up that kind of money. Some owner out there will offer him a ton of money

 

He has thrown 2 TD'S but also 4 picks. Williams QBR ranks him 29th in the NFL, so yes he is off to a rough start.

 

The guy is three games into his career. It's a little early to write him off as a bust.

 

Thankfully Robert Nutting doesn't own the Steelers. If he did own them, Fields could be the greatest QB in NFL and he'd sit him so he wouldn't cost him anything. Ask Rowdy Tellez about it

 

and he has to see that with MT and AS and Co, it is a good fit here. to start over could submarine him again.....good fit 'so far'........

 

Collective Bargaining Agreement should address QB contracts.......but I bet it / they won't.

I'm not writing him off, just said he is off to a rough start. The Bears went out and got Williams a lot of skill position help but completely ignored the offensive line. Williams has a jail break coming at him on almost every snap.

 

I think he would have to play some REAL big boy ball the rest of the season to sniff the huge deals. Hopefully he plays well, makes his mark and gets maybe a Baker size contract? Would be best case scenario for the Steelers. For Justin, I'm sure there is a bit of location / stability understanding now (Bears vs Steelers). Don't get me wrong, I think if someone wants to pay him Dak money he'll go wherever, but doubt he goes to Carolina for example just cause he can get a little more than a Steelers offer.

But I do echo your question regarding leverage. Not sure they have any coming off a 1 year deal.

 

Great movie and cast. Besides Eastwood and Sutherland it had Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Carroll O'Connor (Archie Bunker).

 

This just doesn't fit with how most professional athletes think or act. They think they can be great anywhere. When they get the opportunity, they want to get paid. If Fields continues to play as he has so far, bare minimum is going to be more than what Daniel Jones got two years ago.

 

I'm not sure you can say Daniel Jones played "real big boy ball" in 2022, but that got him a four-year deal with $160 million, though the Giants can get out of it after this year. Jones threw for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions and he ran for about 700 yards. He played well as the Giants won a playoff game, then lost in the divisional round. Fields is on a similar pace so far and it would be two years later, so he would expect even more this offseason.

Of course, this assumes he continues at his current pace. He could start producing more or he could start turning the ball over again.

 

How did Trevor Lawrence do do get that huge contract? I'm not disagreeing with your reasoning but there are billionaire owners out there that have zero common sense. I'm betting one of those guys will open the bank for him

Daniel Jones was a very very questionable decision IMO. Trevor was touted as the next GREAT QB...so I get the pressure there.

I just don't see OK knee jerk reacting to 1 season and dropping the bag on JF barring a SB run.

 

I forgot he is a 1 year deal. He surprises me and leads us into the Playoffs he is going to want to get paid. Tough call for Steelers. Why I say money ruined sports.

He is going to benefit from being on a team with a top 5 D. The Ravens were smart enough to know their defense won them a SB and not Trent Dilford. If he is still our QB those last 8 games, that will be his proving ground.
