What does everyone think of this pick? He is beast and would replace Hampton..the problem is what do you do with McClendon?

We've already got McClendon, ta'amu, and fangupo so it doesn't make much sense.

even if we go bpa outside of the positions discussed on this board, i don't think it would be jenkins.

They go nose tackle crazy it seems in the Mock Draft World. A lot of them have us taking either Jenkins or Williams (occaisionally Hankins) in the first. Some have all 3 going in the first round, along with Latouli (Starr) whose also seen as a nose tackle. Ta'amu was the second pure nose tackle taken in the draft last year, and that was mid-4th round.

i think it would be good. if heyward jenkins mclendon play at the same time, i think it would free up the lbs to make more plays. i seen jenkins at georgia. you aint blocking him with one man. even at this level

ta'amu, and fangupo have proven nothing, therefore easily replaceable. The only thing good about them on the roster is they serve as an insurance policy so Steelers don't need to reach ahead of where they should if a decent NT is available.

My feeling is they might draft a big time NT and make Mclendon a NT/DE backup....maybe even competing with Ziggy for a starting spot.

I've seen Jenkins going to us in several mocks. He does sound like a beast, but I'm high on McLendon like everybody else, and we might still get something out of Ta'amu. They spent a 6th and a 4th on that guy, so if he can stay out of jail, the team is going to give him every chance they can. Even though he was lost as a rookie he still has a ton of potential.

With a pick as high as we have this year, and so many positions of need, there will be other options available. And with two other very recent 1st rounders on the DL, I'd be happier going OL or just about anywhere else on defense.

does anyone think that if we put mclendon at de soneone lije jenkins at nose and heyward at other de that would be the best dline we have had in some time? we would the other two nt and ziggy to sub in. maybe even kesiel.

So Ziggy is going to sub for Heyward? If they thought Heyward was better, why isn't he starting now?

fangupo like mclendon can play DE too. he's got alot of tape as a DE at BYU. those two are both flexible that way possibly freeing up a spot from woods. i like woods hustle though. he works hard it seems. i don't know if hankins is any different then what we have here really.

Well, I'm not a huge fan of taking a huge NT so early since I think we can rotate 2 hopefully decent players (McLendon and Taamu). Since we have an ILB though and the league is becoming more of a passing league, esp for TEs, it might make sense to take a huge NT like Jenkins and then have a lighter, faster ILB than we traditionally would. Perhaps if Spence can come back from his knee injury, he could make a great ILB for us. He * supposedly* had great cover skills for a LB and is very fast but lacked the size to take on offensive linemen. If we had a huge run stuffing NT, that would compensate for Spence's small size and help our defense be able to cover the TEs of the Pats, Bengals, Ravens, etc.

I wouldn't mind it just because I'd like to see McClendon get a shot at playing DE. I thnk he could be the rare pass rusher from the 3-4 DE position, in the mold of a Richard Seymour.

Forget a rotation... I want McClendon starting over Ziggy. Ziggy hasn't shown much and he's had his chance... McClendon has looked very good in limited action.

well by rotation i mean ziggy and keseil can come in mostly on third and long or passing situations we they take the nose out anyway.

I don't think any of the nose tackles in this draft are worth pick #17, especially give that the position has less value in the pass-first NFL these days. To take a nose tackle at #17 in today's NFL, he needs to be a sure fire franchise player who can stop the run AND push the pocket like Vince Wilfork. I don't see a guy like that in this draft. If we take any nose tackle at #17, I will probably need a new TV because mine will have a suffered the impact of whatever I have in my hand when we make our selection (maybe I should make sure that I just have food in my hand so that all I need to do is clean the screen).

I second what freak said. The only other positions I see in the 1st round is ILB or Safety

I don't see us taking a NT in the first round. While the 2 young guys in Fangupo and Ta'amu haven't proved anything and McLendon is still very young, he has proved as much as DeCastro, Adams, Gilbert, and Beachum have. In other words if we are eligible to take a NT, we could take any OT as well. I don't see it.
