Problem for the steelers since several years now,the steelers are too slow to adapt to the current NFL....A team need to be able to score around 30 points(I don't said 30 points per game but be able to do that when necessary) but too often,Tomlin want to win with the defense even when come playoffs time, the defense gave up 30 points or more too often

This is not just on Tomlin, since this is Colbert who draft Pickett who had a low ceilling but keeping Canada after 2022 was inexcusable...It may not have been 100% on him but he has a responsibility for this disaster

They only copy what is successful. Right now his scheme has proven to be successful. What has Tomlin had copied in the last 15 years? Your not given Shannahan any credit.

I am a defensive first guy myself. Thats the kind of football I love. Unfortunately in todays NFL you can no longer build a team that way. For the very reason the rules and officiating favor the offense heavily. As a result it is a fulls errand to invest heavily on defense when good defensive plays often end up getting penalized now. The investment is all about the Oline, QB and WR. You have that and a good scheme you have a chance.

    This is a great post!

A lot of people think that when a guy (coach or player) has success, that it's just all him!

Tom Brady was not that great at Michigan. He found his calling after Drew Bledsoe went down to injury and the rest was history. On the other side of that coin, Belicheck had a stint as an unsuccessful HC in Cleveland before becoming the Pats HC. "Fit" and "Chemistry" are often two way overlooked things in coaching and on teams!

People also forget that ALL QBs in the NFL are very good! You have guys that just succeed with different skill sets because they're being utilized properly. Kurt Warner for example. When the Rams brought him in (from the Arena league), he was used to a quick release. Not a great arm! Not a superb athlete! But he had a great supporting cast and a very good HC that had a system he gelled with. This is what I constantly say about good coaches.... you utilize the talent you have as much as you can. In other words, if you are a Run'n'shoot guy and you have personnel that is a better fit for a heavy running attack, you change your offense to fit that. This is at all levels of football! Yes, NFL coaches have more control of who they have but things happen; injuries, players get "mis-scouted" (not what they exactly thought), etc..

There are so many pieces to the "performance" of a team, that it's hard to pin down (in one to two seasons) what's going on. But....if a pattern develops (several years 3+ of under performing), then that's a coaching problem! Players not getting better or straight up getting worse= coaching problem!

    Cowher 1

I know...not your point. BUT, Tom Brady was actually very good at Michigan. Belichick and Brady won 3SBs in 4 years like right away, then 9 years, then they won 3 more in 5 seasons. Bill and Brady had success and were always in the conversation, but they also had plenty of years of struggle.

Andy Reid had a struggling yet successful career as HC from 1999-2018. Now he's been in 4SBs in the last 5years.

Bottom line is there is no Golden Road to success as an NFL HC.

SF has been very successful. Tge differentiator was Mahomes everyone knows that. A ton of teams have it are trying to copy Shanahan by the way. The Steelers being one of them by the way.
