its the first week in camp and we really know squat, lol. My long term' for Wilson was at least hoping he could stablize the position and both parties could find that mid range amount that could satisfy. Somewhere between Baker and Kirk, it might hurt short term but you could get out of it without binding your team for 3-4 years.

For Fields i was hoping a 2 year extension that would have given time and structure if he develops. I got neither so what do I know, lol.

Of course Wilson is better than Trubisky but the point was he was handed the job because of who he was not how he performed.

If Fields wins the job he should start, shouldn’t just be handed to Wilson.

    Don't all NFL Teams?!

Hell, Mike McDaniel of the Dolphins may not run nearly as many sweeps. However, he still employs and deploys them. Granted... when you have a track team of WRs and RBs?!... much easier to pull off. That said, still not easy to do.

Geno Smith would be about the closest one though Geno is technically a hold in until the actual Franchise QB heads to Seattle.

Other than that?! Agreed. Beyond Rich Gannon?!.... got me there.

Between me and you, I am giving Shane Steichen the benefit of the doubt here.

He has had success with QBs who's primary option was run first. Remember that he did get the best season of Jalen Hurts to date out of him. Anthony Richardson's overall talent and potential far exceed anything Hurts ever showed at Oklahoma.

Regardless... if it were so easy. Richardson's inexperience showed in Year One in a big way. I believe that does get corrected with Steichen's guidance and a Colts Offense that, between me and you, is being dangerously underestimated.

I Know there’s a lot of excitement with JF but if we were to go into a season with him leading, scares the bejeebus outta me. There are THOSE that not only throw that INT but have the uncanny knack to throw it at exactly the worst of times. He’s one of em. They’ll Wow ya in practice but in the real world when the pressure is on, they’ll make that mind boggling error. Incredibly talented, draw up some plays for him to do his thing but as a franchise QB to take us all the way, umm, no. Sorry.

We should/better start to see more of Russ as we get closer here and no more of the sled.

how do we know this isn't a ploy by the Steelers to not risk Wilson getting injured really bad ---you know let him take it easy until regular season. And if Fields does good it's all great. We will see whets going on in a few weeks. I don't care who starts I want a :steelflag: Superbowl win

    Funny Pole Position analogy.....

If the Drivers earns the pole position, and then the car has a mechanical problem and needs the engine replaced or something before the start of the race, doesn't the driver lose the pole position and have to go to the back? :)

Could this be what happens in the QB race???

On a related side note.......our former QBs. This is from looking thru several articles on each to see what people are saying and thinking about them.

    Neither has fallen apart.

Mason Rudolph seems to be doing ok, but does not have a lock on the QB2 spot. Apparently Malik Willis who has been the QB3 for the Titans is making a good showing for his spot as QB2. It sounds like they are pretty equal but Mason has a big edge on NFL experience.

Kenny did well in OTAs. His training camp has not been bad, but not inspiring either. His accuracy and slow pickup of the offense have been the issues so far. QB3 Tanner McKee was doing very well with QB3 reps and is now getting some QB2 reps as well. Sounds like they are seeing where the ceiling for McKee might be.

I really thought the KP would do better if given a chance under a real OC. I also thought that MR had matured a lot and really seemed like a leader with some decent talent at the end. But, with it looking like both of them could end up in the QB3 spot for their new teams, I would have to say that the Steelers made a good call on them. They should be fighting for the QB1 spot, not worried about being able to stay QB2.

As for Trubisky, he never really felt like a Steeler to me.......those beady eyes I guess....lol. Anyways, he is the same as he ever was. Getting sacked, throwing interceptions and failing to impress.

If they are in danger of losing their backup jobs to Tanner McKee and Malik Willis then yeah they haven't had a good training camp.

And yet, no QB threw more BLOS the last few seasons than the Superbowl winner.

    My take;

KFP - floor is below Fields, ceiling is above Fields
Fields - floor is below Wilson, above KFP; ceiling is below KFP
Wilson - floor is above KFP & Fields; ceiling is above KFP & Fields
    • The ceiling for a QB is determined by 1) accuracy, 2) decisionmaking, and 3) arm strength.
    • Fields and Pickett have the same accuracy issues.
    • Pickett has better decisionmaking
    • Fields has a better arm

No way the ceilling of Fields is lower that Pickett....No way!

The ceilling is about upside and potential

I'll bite. Which trait will Fields exceed Pickett on? I would say they both have accuracy issues, Fields has a better arm, but Pickett's decisionmaking making is better. Is it Fields running around that gives him potential?

Better arm, much better mobility.Running game will always be elite with him as QB not only because of his rushing yards but also he will make his running back better because the opposing defense must respect the legs of Fields so it will open the middle for the running back or Fields will have a chance to have a big run outside....

I don't think the decision making of Pickett is very good.....He is conservative like crazy.Accuracy and consistency can improve over time for Fields

well, your point was not well stated earlier - at all. this is an apples and oranges comparison

this is Russ's job, UNLESS that calf does not heal and he cannot get ready for the season.
then, yes, we will be forced to look at Fields, something none of us is really excited to do. He might have upside - in a few years. I am not hating on him at all.

But Russ brings potential talent, skill and 'been there done that' to the 2024 season.

the media machine hype is ridiculous.

    i agree on this.

Pickett may fall to 3rd in the Philly depth chart, from stories this weekend

I said last year, he will wash out of the league in 3-4 seasons.

    we will watch and see......

How is it apples to oranges when you just confirmed it with your perception of Wilson? “His job to lose”. He shouldn’t just be handed the job, that’s dumb. This isn’t Russ of 10 years ago. Knock yourself out getting excited about a QB that offers pretty much a game manager ceiling but I’ll take the younger guy with more upside and possible longer term answer. Wilson would be for this year and thats it unless you want to throw another big contract to an aging QB, worked swell with Ben.

I agree. Experience is a great thing to have, but when they start talking with the "body of work" and resume credentials, that is where they go wrong and can really miss the mark. In addition, I wonder if it goes back to the football is a business mentality and RW gets the start to later be replaced by Justin Fields in order to only give up the 6th round pick and keep the 4th.

One thing the steelers need to do if they want to stop being stuck in the middle is to go more often with the young players with more potential instead of being too safe.I'm talking about the QB battle but also at the o-line with Dan Moore....

Tomlin needs to stop living in his fears!

I can agree on Pickett's conservatism, but Fields is the exact opposite. Have a look at Fields' 4th qtr stats vs KP. Not at all good, and this comes back to decisionmaking in crunch time. Processing speed has been a problem for Fields. He is fortunately gifted to have legs to get him out of trouble but that style isn't going to win a championship. Being able to go through progressions, read a defense, and deliver an accurate ball. That will bring home a Lombardi.

True about the struggle of Fields in the fourth quarter, this is a concern but it can also change.

But what are Kenny's strengths?...Maybe the last 5 minutes of a game but he won games the same way Tebow won in 2011...terrible for 55 minutes and a comeback after that but the defense needs to be perfect the whole game, either given no more than 1 TD or you'll lose before the 4th quarter starts! Pickett has no above average strength to be a QB at a high level...Fields' potential is there, especially if Arthur Smith can play to his strengths!

For the style, it's just a matter of time before a QB of this style wins the super bowl...It could be Lamar,Richarson,Hurt,etc....Hurt was very close in 2022,Cam Newton was also in the super bowl in 2015...It will happen in the next 10 years at least once, I'm sure of it....

Some of this conversation has crept into the "who do you WANT to start" vs "who do you THINK will start?" territory. Obviously the job shouldn't just be handed to one player or the other but I personally feel like Tomlin will start the season with the "safer bet" in Wilson. Right, wrong or indifferent. I could be way off on that though. It's been known to happen!
