The case for/against Justin Fields...

Did you call Kenny a moron when he said that he didn't learn anything while sitting on the bench those last few games? And, for future reference, Fields scored over twice as high as Kenny on the wonderlic (35-17). And Kenny reacted exactly the way that you would expect a person with that score would- felt threatened, refused to learn from his "betters", and when competition was brought in, an older, super bowl winning qb he could learn from, chose to demand a trade. And the only way he starts in Philly is if Hurts breaks a leg.
Fields, instead of demanding a trade when it became obvious the Bears had the #1 and were going to take Williams, worked with the Bears Gm with a list of teams he was willing to go to. Because of the high regard the staff and players had for Fields, they agreed. His list was Pittsburgh (obviously), the Falcons (before signing Cousins), Minnesota, and the Raiders. The fact that he still wanted to come to the Steelers after they signed Wilson says a lot about his ability to work when he's not the #1.

Kenny Pickett is kind of a moron too since we're on the subject. He should have stayed and accepted his back up role to Wilson, but he left to be a back up for another team where he has even less of a chance to play. And he's making noise about the Steelers going back on their word or something. It wasn't a very good look for Pickett if you ask me.

 

I don't want Ewers or Allar, have you watched them play ?

All I am saying is that is the nightmare scenario for the team if neither Fields nor Wilson pan out. Nabbing Prescott isn't ideal either for he will never be a QB to take you deep into the Playoffs.

 

So Pickett (reportedly) wanting out is horrible. Fields wanting out is not. Got it.

Both quarterbacks were put in dysfunctional situations with their first organization. The Bears had an OC problem while Fields was there. So did the Steelers while they had Pickett. People like to blame the Bears' line while ignoring the issues the Steelers had up front. Fields had worse weapons at times, but in 2023, he had better targets to throw to than Pickett.

Many of the complaints are similar, too. Fields also struggled to read defenses. Fields also had a habit of running right into the pressure. He also held the ball too long and turned it over too often, two issues that weren't there with Pickett. I'm fine with Fields as a cheap, quality backup for 2024, but assuming he will be more beyond that is dubious at best.

 

How do you define "working out?" Are we just talking about the 2024 season? Are we defining it as earning the job for 2025, at which point the Steelers have to pay big money for one of those guys?

 

Unless we run the triple option I just don't see Fields being consistently successful. I hope I am wrong.

 

If you watched them then you would realize neither one of them is the answer .

Furthermore, both still have the 2024 NCAA Football Season to play. Who knows how they will look by seasons end?! Prematurely saying that neither will do well is shortsighted, no?!

Ewers has gotten better every year. I don't know if He's the answer, but another year of college may show us more.....either good , or bad. I mean if We didn't watch Burrow's last season at LSU.....nobody would think He would be good.

When I have seen him play, he's inconsistent as a passer.

I figured as much, which is why I never insinuated that you did.

He is fast and athletic, he absolutely should use those to their fullest extent. Lamar Jackson has been wildly successful doing the same thing despite being self-checked in the post season. I'd rather him try to be Lamar than try to be Ben or Brady. Use the talents he has and just be Justin Fields.

As for the "place to learn".. that is just speculation. We don't know for a fact that he was offered a kind helping hand from Foles that he rudely turned down. It is neither a known fact, nor very likely given what we know about him as a person (based on basically every individual/organization that he has been closely connected with) to be true. It certainly wouldn't be smart to turn down any help that is offered... but you're accepting an anonymous source and an ex-player personnel director (who got run out of town) as beacons of fact and not realizing that there might be an agenda behind their words too.

 

What specifically do you see in Allar? I haven't watched many Penn State games, but I caught the OSU and Michigan games and thought he looked awful. I get that those were his worst games of the season, but the biggest games of the year and he completes 43% of his passes for a combined 260 yards passing. He didn't just struggle, he was downright awful.

 

He has a lot of room to grow for certain. However, there is more to a QB than just the mere stat sheet. He is indeed raw but his weapons are really, really suspect.

 

If Fields can improve as a pocket passer, if he can demonstrate composure in the pocket and make the quick completions, be a thrower first and a runner second, he would be extraordinarily dangerous. It's up to him.

But the recent flow of information, wether it's tainted or not, is not helping his cause. My posts may have been slightly emotional because, frankly, I didn't like what I was hearing and reading. We need a healthy locker room if we're going to go anywhere this year. I want Fields to be the best version of himself and the best QB that he can be. To me that would mean a deep dive into learning the "art" of pocket passing. It's going to take work, practice, and humility. I remain optimistic that he is up for the challenge.

 

It's not impossible, but he's no rookie. He is three years into his career and he hasn't shown that he can be that guy.

 

Kenny was the king at running into pressure last year. He threw 6 interceptions but only 4 TDs. Not a turnover machine but didn't press the ball down the field because he didn't trust his reads. I would still rather Wilson start, but Fields isn't a downgrade from Kenny necessarily, even if he has more risk/reward in his game empirically.

 

Watch film on Fields, he has piss poor pocket presence too. Wont step up in pocket and has same traits as KFP running right into sacks.
