This was before he became a Steeler. Back during when he was the drafted.

I am as well. We draft a QB next season that Wilson can mentor.

It seems the mentor thing for Fields was tried in Chicago with Foles and turned into a disaster. So Chicago unloaded him. Now we have him. Can Fields be molded and mentored? Chicago already tried.

Over many, many years of my experience, it is very rare that any "mentoring" actually takes place.

I go back to when rookies didn't start until they proved they could, they were 2nd class citizens so to say.
I remember waiting for Joe Namath to start behind Mike Taliaferro....and before that John Brodie behind Y.A. Tittle or even Montana behind Deberg.

Yes, they are in the same QB room and go through much the same preparations.
Mostly it is QB1 doing his thing and QB2 just waiting.

Wilson will do his best to remain #1. It's up to fields to see what Wilson does and do it better.

"Mentoring" might not be the best word. Learning how to read defenses from a proven pocket passer like Foles is a better way to put it.

True that,,,, I wasn't singling your post out though... just hear mentoring passed around a lot, even on TV.
    Most Vets hate rookies, lol.
But it is a great thing, every starter should be looking back over his shoulder to see who's coming up behind them.

The Falcons are stupid and the Goff deal isn't comparable because he is six years younger than Wilson.

I still find it funny that posters will make excuses for Fields and talk about the Bears doing him no favors without realizing that the Steelers may not offer a better situation. Look at how badly they handled Pickett.

I was reading a break down of Fields play and it was saying that Wilson isn’t a good player for Fields to learn from. He said Fields biggest fault is he doesn’t throw with anticipation and thats not Wilsons game either. So if Fields is going to improve his game it’s not going to be from Wilson, the QB coach will need to teach him. Not sure how helpful that will be, wasn’t Sullivan supposed to be teaching Kenny? That didn’t go to well.

Haven’t seen that article but goes against everything you hear about Fields personality. Everyone talks about him as an exemplary young man and hard worker.

There are a lot of stupid GM’s and Goff isn’t worth that contract. Detroit has a damn good team, not like Goff carried them.

I'm still drunk from the partying I did when they threw Pickett's ass out, but there's another fear on the horizon.

I doubt that Fields is the long term answer. Wilson will be lucky to be in the league for three more years. He's getting old.

However, if the Steelers find neither guy worthy of an extension, we may be staring at a $60 miilion a year Dak Prescott.

If that doesn't make you want to vomit, then we don't have much in common.

Calling Fields a track star is weird. He was never a track and field guy, though he was also a standout baseball player in high school before choosing to pursue football. He is an NFL quarterback and has proven that through his play at the position in the NFL. Pretty weak to continuously call him "track star" for whatever reason.

As for the relationship with Foles, who cares? Everywhere he has been (Chicago included) Justin has had nothing but rave reviews on the type of person, leader, and worker he is. We don't know the dynamic with Foles, and to arbitrarily paint it as someone trying to mentor Fields and getting shot down for no reason (especially when every other individual/organization paints this as out of character) is just wrong. Maybe Foles was a jerk? Maybe he thought he was going to get a shot at starting again only to have some young kid get drafted and put in the lineup ahead of him, and that created tension? Maybe the story you painted is true? We will likely never know. But none of it matters since he will have a shot to learn from Wilson and then likely have a shot to start (either this year or next year moving forward) with the Steelers.

I like the kid as both a player and person, as I do know a bit about both living in Buckeye country and being a Buckeye fan. I think he's got as good a shot as any at succeeding here.

Isn't Tom Arth the quarterbacks coach now? Sullivan is a senior assistant or something like that.

Sometimes he did and the overall numbers are impressive, but Goff can still be inconsistent, which isn't great for that much money.

You remember back in the 90's, they use to refer to a certain type of quarterback as an "athletic quarterback"? It was often used by pundits to describe black quarterbacks, because they obviously couldn't be "cerebral qb's"- you know, the type that study the game and read defenses and win on strategy, instead of relying on athletic ability. Because they couldn't possibly be smart enough.
When the poster you responded asks "Is Fields a moron?" he's doing the same thing. It couldn't possibly be Foles fault, or Andy Dalton's, (although the articles I've read said it was toxic top to bottom).
So, he's a track star, not a quarterback.

Correct. Forgot they brought in a new QB coach. Was thinking Sullivan was pulling double duties this year.

    Thats a plus at least.

As I have told my good friend @S.T.D@S.T.D, I am rooting hard for Justin Fields. As I see it, he and Trevor Lawrence were dealt $#!t show Management and Leadership from the start; Lawrence still technically is. Add the fact of how now there are reports of how his time in Chicago began and one can understand why Fields probably had to focus a lot more on just being accepted than improving his skills; an absolute no no when it comes to young QBs. Matt Eberflus and the OC carousel in Chicago didn't help either; weapons also being at a minimum until his final season. A new start in a new city in Pittsburgh could be just what the doctor ordered; a proven, Super Bowl Winning QB willing to not just embrace him but guide him being the bonus.

However, while I am making these statements sound all sunshine and rainbows, allow me to bring those expectations down to Earth. There is only so much mentoring that Fields can obtain; his idol in Russell Wilson or otherwise. Fields himself will have to prove that he is worthy of not just being a starting QB but something more. Currently as I sit here today?!.... I am 50-50 on him; the positives being the unreal overall skillset being offset by the still continual basic woes he had as a rookie. I do indeed hope for Justin Fields to succeed; my desire for him to do so being even stronger than my hope....

... but I wouldn't be surprised if he nor Wilson don't work out all together.

My personal dream level scenario is that the Steelers somehow, someway end up with either Quinn Ewers from Texas or Drew Allar from Penn State. The former is an electric QB with all the tools to succeed but needs the polish while the other is the closest thing I have seen to Big Ben.

I understand what you're saying, but I generally tend to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to insinuating what they mean. It could be that he meant it in a racial fashion, but it wasn't explicit, so I wasn't going to assume the worst.

As for Foles/Dalton/Fields.... Dysfunctional organizations are dysfunctional for a reason. I'm sure there's blame to go around (even outside of the QB room within the organization).

No. Did not mean it in a racial fashion. I was making a point about squandering an opportunity to be a better QB. As far as 'track star' , I was trying to make the point that he relies on his running and athleticism as a QB too much. And he was in a place to learn more about being a better pocket passer in the league and he apparently squandered that opportunity to improve. Not smart if you ask me. Nothing personal to Fields.

What most people either don't realize, or don't want to see is.....most of these kids have been playing the same exact way since they were 7 years old.....you are not just going to all of a sudden make them into a different player....in the hardest part of their careers. You can polish, and tweak a few things, but You aren't completely changing it. He has always relied on the running part of His game when things get hard. That will not change. Same with a pure pocket passer that has worked on scrambling.....when it gets hard....he will revert.
This has nothing to do with race. I feel the exact same way about J. Allen.
