Philly took Cam Jergans, a center, in the 2nd round of 2022. He's been playing guard the last two years, but he was drafted as a replacement for Kelsey. They'll be looking at a guard, maybe Barton, but they need a Tackle more than an interior lineman.

Personally I don't see it as a primary need either, but keep running into scuttlebutt connecting them to one of the bigger names at center.

Is Cooper Dejean one of those players we’ll be dealing with one way or the other? One of “those” guys that are a pain in the arse for us or them?

On average two center's get drafted within the first two rounds, one of the top 3 will be available at #51.

There's too much talent at positions of need in the second round to be reaching for Van Pran. If it comes to that I'd rather they trade up in the third to get him. But either way you're at an overspend.

Cooper DeJean would fit with the Steelers defense perfectly. He's one of those prospects that it's not even a doubt if he would work. I just have zero confidence he falls to 20.

Although, if the draft goes QB and OL run in the top10 like most years, it kinda puts the group of top DBs and WRs into that next 10-15 area.

Kiper has 13 of the top15 picks as non-DBs. But DeJean going to the Jags at 17.

I'm not interested in Van Pran, I don't know why you think all of the top three guys will be gone by #51, the Steelers have plenty of day 2 picks in 2025 to try and move up in the second round if they need to.

The Steelers do not have extra Day 2 picks in 2025. Their first extra pick is in the 5th, and they may owe Chicago their 4th if Fields plays more than 1/2 of the snaps. All that will take is an injury to Wilson. A 2025 5th round pick will maybe get you a 2 spot move up in the 2nd.

Even if they don't, they can still use a mid round pick in 2025 as part of up a trade up package to move up in the second round if they want to.

Not sure who you're classifying as the top three, JPJ/Barton/Frazier or JPJ/Frazier/Van Pran. I personally don't include Barton since he's more of a projection to move there from his current spot outside. So I expect Van Pran to be there at 51, less likely at 84. While I'm fine with him as a prospect, I don't think he's worth Round 2 capital in this draft, especially considering some of the other needs they have.

I've paged through several dozen mocks and analyses over the past few months. I don't expect any to be an exact foretelling of what will happen in a couple of weeks, but I do think the trends are worth noting, especially if you are trying to fill the number of holes the Steelers are. The majority predict JPJ (and Barton) to be taken by the top of the second at latest; Frazier hovers top to mid second (a few show him at 51, not often); and Van Pran goes top to mid third.

I may also be a bigger advocate of the position than some. I just think having a strong center pushes the line as a whole. The Steelers need a right tackle, but I'm more willing to explore the depth in the third there (Fisher and Rosengarten, e.g.).

I think most people have JPJ, Barton, and Frazier as their top 3, Van Pran stock has fallen he probably goes in the third round.

Yes. I believe that's what I said above.

As far as Barton, there's no universal agreement on where he plays in the pros; he's a tweener. No reason to doubt he'd be solid in the middle, but he'd have to be developed at center since he hasn't played it since his freshman year.

I was going by the talking heads who said Barton is likely to be a center in the NFL.

Yeah, some have. I do think he'd be an intriguing fit for a team that could allow him an adjustment period. Not sure how much the Steelers want to ride Herbig.
