Every year there are players the talking heads and fans are shocked to see fall. Who do you predict falls in 2024?

I think JPJ falls. Due to injury history and only around 1300 snaps at Center.

Agreed. Largely because of the injury history. Apparently he’s already had a lot of concussions.

My faller is Cooper DeJean. I watched 3 full games plus his highlight reels this morning. He is not a first round outside corner IMO unless he goes to a team that is VERY zone-heavy. He is terrific at playing with the receiver in front of him. He blows up screens and runs to his side. He tackles the catch with very little extra yards gained. These are all great traits for a zone corner. I have been unimpressed by his play in man coverage. He carries vertical routes well because of his long speed, but gives up a lot of separation on any in/out breaks. I have also seen zero snaps in press man in all of that film. On the rare occasions where he played man coverage, it was off man, or a handful of snaps where he played up on the line, but never tried to press the receiver. He just trailed.

IMO a first round outside corner must be able to play all types of man coverage and do more than just play zone and trail vertical routes well. I haven’t see that with DeJean. However as a safety, ALL of the traits you look for appear to be there for him to be a complete safety who can play deep or in the box, and also line up in the slot. My question is: is DeJean willing to be the All Pro safety that he has the potential to be, or does he see himself as an outside corner?

If the Steelers project him as a safety, they will not draft him. If they see him as a compliment to Porter, off the ball corner that fits zone schemes and can cover the slot, he might be drafted as a CB, but it sounds like he should not have a 1st round grade, for the Steelers at least.

If the Steelers drafted DeJean it would probably be in a Cam Sutton type of role.

JMO, but I think teams looking at Him...will not be looking at him at a one certain position, but as a very very good chess piece that can play many positions , and put in different ones according to what D is on the field.

But is that a role he wants? In this interview he says the right things (questions on corner vs safety start around 3 1/2 minutes in). Also, is a chess piece worth a pick in the top half of the first round? I think the luxury of taking a guy who is a chess piece starts with teams in the lower half of the first, and I think there’s a good chance he’ll be there at pick #20. That’s what I mean when I say that he’s a faller IMO. I’d consider taking him there. Have him play a multi faceted role and let Minkah patrol the middle and cause the type of havoc he causes as a high safety. It would solve our nickel need and he could also play in the box or deep. I haven’t seen him blitz, but I bet he’d be good at it just watching how he takes on blockers in the run and outside screen game.

I doubt if they are drafting a player for the Cam Sutton role in the first round, or even the second round with their needs at C, WR, and OT.

What do you think of him as a #2 corner who plays the slot when you need a 3rd CB? Much like Cam Sutton was here for us.

I think that S is risky since it is a different position entirely. You're basing it entirely off of feeling that he could be good there (not saying he can't be, just that it is risky). I think he would work in our defense as the 3rd S, #2 CB, slot CB, etc. He is a really good player and a really good athlete. He could develop into a good outside CB, or he can move around a defense like a chess piece. It really just depends.

Well, if he is the Cam Sutton role but a much better player, there is reason to take him in the first. We would essentially have our #2 CB behind Peezy Jr. and a guy who would easily kick into the slot when needed. He has the versatility to play the #3 safety role and be on the field pretty much at all times in different roles. He would be much more than Cam and if he ends up being really good at that role, why would he not be worth the first round pick? We have other needs, but we can find a way to make those work in other ways. That role is still a need on this team too.

He was recruited as a safety (played S and QB in high school) and moved to corner when Iowa had a need. I did see him play in the slot and in the box on film, so it’s clear (to me anyway) that he can play there. I did not see him play any deep safety.

I agree, but what you are describing is not a Cam Sutton role. Cam Sutton was a slot corner/nickel back until his last year with the Steelers, when he became the starting CB, then moved to the nickel in sub-packages. If all the OTs, and WRs the Steelers have rated higher than DeJean are drafted, it's possible, but I believe they would have tried harder for a free agent center and WR, if they wanted DeJean.

kind of a troy role. i know he's not troy but troy was played all over so the offense never knew where he was going.

Well, its the Cam Sutton role (starting #2 corner that kicks to the slot in nickel) plus the ability to play in the box as the 3rd safety if that is needed. He'd basically be the #2 corner in base and the extra DB on the field in every sub-package. So not exactly the same, but fairly similar. He'd just be more valuable than Sutton was.

I think your last statement certainly makes a lot of sense. It certainly feels like we are looking at OT or WR, but CB has an outside chance of being the pick. We still have a few FA WR's available that could be revisited after the draft, and there is always the potential for trades too. It feels like Round 2 is where we are taking C, so it will be interesting to see what we do with #20. Draft is sneaking up on us.

I don't know how He would take it, but I know He .....Like You said could be very useful here, and if they took Him in the 1st I would be very happy for everything You mentioned, and more.

He wouldn’t be my favorite pick at 20, but can see what they like about him and he fits a definite need. The only other position of need higher than slot corner is center and I just don’t see them drafting a center in the first round.

Also they wouldn't just need to play Him at slot....they could actually use Him at every D we play. Just in different positions. He wasn't My 1st pick, but the more I watch him, and the more I think about it....the better I like Him. I believe/hope We can get a good Center in the 2nd, and I know if our Qb play is good enough.....we can get a good Wrs 3rd round, and beyond.

The only thing that makes me think they might go with someone else is neither Tomlin or Kahn were at his pro day. I think tackle,cb,and wr are all in play in the first round. Out of those three cb is a bigger need.

I would love to him but unfortunately this year we don’t have the luxury of picking him over an OL or WR.
