2024 Draft

I sincerely hope they do get a top tier CB. The situation however is very fluid because of free agency and trades etc. I don’t see how it is possible to get a top tier OT, C, CB and WR in the draft with our current draft capital. Hopefully Khan can make some magic and make it happen.

 

I think our best hope for the draft at CB would be a high end slot CB. Its a desperately needed skillset in the room and wouldn't require us to use a first round pick in order to get it. C/WR/T/Slot CB seem to be the top needs.

 

we need a right tackle not a top tier LT. much easier to get after the first or even second round. WR is extremely deep. CB and center in the first two rounds would be my liking. we will be getting 4 top 90 players in this draft.

 

we also may have our RT here already. i know i know, mac you always talk up these guys but there is a lot of talk about this kid cook and his feet and smarts. tampa coaches liked him and were not happy the team let him go. we have seen him doing those same things here and building on them. i'm not counting this kid out yet and many others are singing his praises, including our offensive line coach. we will have to see where this goes.

Apparently Barton’s RAS score as a center is 10.00, for those of you who keep track of that stuff. Only other center with that score since 2000 is creed Humphrey. His score as a guard is like 9.98, I believe the 4th highest since 2000.

sub 5.0? i saw his 40 was 5.40. that is one of the slowest.

 

He didn’t run at the combine. He ran a 4.97 at his pro day, which would have made him 5th of all the offensive linemen

 

Weird, he said his agent called him around the 10th pick in the 7th round and let him know that he was a UDFA and had signed with Tampa. All before the draft ended. Tampering?

 

Could Barton drop into the 2nd round? I have been thinking that they want to draft Mims in the 1st and try to trade back up for or just draft Barton for Center in the 2nd with the pick we have. Our two 3rd round picks would be slot CB Mike Sainristil and WR Malichi Corley. Good Tackles are harder to find and cost a lot in FA so I think that's why OT is the pick at 1. There are 3 solid centers that one should drop may be there thinking. Centers don't typically go high and tend to fall.

 

I don't think Barton is going to make it to 20, actually.

 

I did some research. Not counting trades, the Steelers avg draft position over the last 50 years is the 21st pick.

Keep in mind, the first 20 of those years there were only 28 teams.

They haven't had a top 10 pick in 25 years. Only 4 in the 50 years. And 3 of those 4 were within a 4 year span at the dismal end of Noll's run.

The highest pick in that time was the 7th pick. That's crazy. The highest pick in 50 years was the 7th pick.

 

As I understand it starter capable RT’s and Centers my all be gone by pick 51 so I am not confident we will get both in the first two rounds. I think picking a Center at 20 is a little early. If they can trade back in round one and accumulate an extra third that they can perhaps package to move up in the second they may be able to get a RT and C who are starter capable. The issues then is WR. Will there be one who is starter capable in the third? I think you can wait to get a slot cb in the third. I would love to get a Cooper Dejean or Terrion Arnold or the guy from Toledo in the first but it just isn’t practical with all of our other needs. In addition Tomlini is high on the guy we picked up in the trade with Carolina so I really don’t see us drafting a CB in the first two rounds.

 

If we can trade back and still get Barton that would be my preference, however he may not even be there at 20 for us. I just have hard time taking a center at 20. It would be different if it were are only need.

Very interesting. Its crazy how the UDFA % is often higher than many of the second and third round for some positions. I understand OT because they go get these giants from Rugby or a small school who just haven’t had the coaching or technique down yet. Its interesting how the CB’s and Centers are defiantly 1st and 2nd rd heavy more so than the other positions with exception of QB of course. I do think this draft is very deep at Cb however and we can get one later. I won’t complain if we get one early though. I think the Centers are going to fall a lot further than people realize the more I read about it. I now think one of JPJ or Frazier will be there at 51. I don’t think the WR’s however are gong to fall but we seem to be good at getting mid round WR’s. Would Love to get Ricky PErsal in the 3rd but I don’t think he will last that long.Luke Mcaffrey or Malachi would nice in 3-4th rounds. A good mid round CB who was highly productive in college and a good man cb the CB out of Boston College Elijah I think his name is.

 

6th round centers nearly the same as 1st and 2nd rounders. UDFA's do quite well. even though i get grief for mentioning these guys, they make up a lot of the league.

 

Barton may not even make it to pick 20 in the first round at this point.

Barton is guard-capable and may even be RT-capable so if we take a center in the first he’d be my choice.

Then if Frazier is available at 51 or the kid from Georgia after the third, you could grab them too. If not then start Barton at center and live with another year of Broderick Jones at RT

 

why bother? These guys don't come with an asterisk. Top ten is top ten. What is a shame is the missed picks and the missed pick we used to trade for the missed pick.

 

You're missing the point. We haven't "earned" a top 10 pick, through bad play, since we took Plex.

 

we are second in win percentage in the super bowl era. only behind dallas. top 10 doesn't mean much if it's the wrong guy.

 

If they have a run on tackles before our pick another option is you draft Barton and sign Connor Williams. Barton starts at Center until Williams comes back from his injury and then you move Barton out to Right Tackle for the year. It is risky but then going into next year you can move Barton to right Guard without having to spend on Daniels. The only way that makes sense is if they think signing Williams this year is gong to be cheaper than signing Daniels next year. The hope is you get Williams a little cheaper because he is coming off of an injury. They could also take a flyer on a mid to late round tackle like a Crum from Wyoming and give them a year to develop the guy. If they have something there they don’t need to draft a RT next year if not then needing to draft a RT and probably a DT next year is much easier than drafting for Slot CB, Perimeter CB, WR, C and RT all in one season. If were lucky we will be able to fill three of those positions this year.
