The 5th year option for fields must be picked up by May 2024……. Hmmm??

Answer me this, What Will the Steelers do, Pick it up or decline it???

His Option will come in at 25 Mil fully guaranteed in 2025.

Fields doesn't seem to have much leverage at this point. Is someone going to come knocking with a contract for him after the season? I would think that's only if they see him as their starter. And based on what I've read here, only 2 teams wanted him as a backup. Don't see how they pick up the option for that kind of dough.

At least five teams contacted Chicago about Fields. When Poles said he would treat Fields right, he allowed Fields and his agent to choose a team, and Fields wanted to come to Pittsburgh to play for Tomlin.
That being said, Fields doesn't have much leverage. There's no way we're picking up the option and paying him $25 million next year. We'll see where we are with him, and resign him and Russel during the year. Wilson didn't come here for a one and done.

Yeah , if they like what they see , they will negotiate a deal before he becomes a FA.
He has no chance of getting that 5th year option.

They will extend him, probably 2 years to start with, maybe 3.

He wants to be here and it’s well know how much Tomlin likes him. They are going to try and make him the franchise guy.

My guess is they don't pick it up which means that 2024 is his last year, then they do an extension.

They have surprised me quite a bit this offseason, but I would be shocked if they picked up that fifth-year option. There is no reason to commit to paying Fields that much money, especially since he might be a backup all of 2024.

You can’t pay that type of money for a guy who won’t even be starting this season.

They’ll probably do an extension to make it three-year deal.
That would be something they could work with easily cap wise.

They have to make a decision BEFORE Even mini camp !!!!

    1) If they do they that means 100% This is Wilson’s only year. Can’t spend 25 mil on a backup.

    2) If they Don’t ……

A: They’ll fight it out and decide at years end…

B: They’ll offer him a one year prove it deal to see if they can develop him and possibly keep him they 2025 in case they want to resign Wilson to an extension, which they may do if we win or compete for a Super Bowl !!!

C: Sign him to a team friendly 2-3 year deal with player options so they can keep him for development and possible future Franchise QB Status…….

Im definitely thinking no to the 5th year option.

I see them offering an extension very late in the season to what ever QB is starting. Could be Fields, or could be Russ.

At least that is what I am reading from Dulac's latest theory.

I can't see how they could take it. He's almost certainly going to be the backup quarterback. They're not going to get a good look at him. Can they really justify spending 10% of their salary cap on a guy that's been the backup quarterback for them? The only way they could possibly do that is if they envision Justin Fields being the guy going into the future after a 1-year contract with Russell Wilson. But wouldn't make a lot more sense to sign Russell Wilson for next year as well if he plays well this year? It would be the same type of a 1-year deal next year I believe. Pittsburgh could pay him the league minimum and stiff Denver for 40 some million dollars.

    This.

Only way they elect to keep Fields is via an extension. That said, I don't see that happening barring extreme circumstances.

    Late in the season….no chance

At the end of the season….possibly depending on how the season went
