You may be right about that. I just wonder if the Steelers had gotten wind that Mason had decided to go in another direction and that he pretty much has a deal worked out with another team already?

Pickett will not be gone until 2025 at the earliest. Why would Steelers give up on him when he has 2 more "cheap" seasons left on his rookie contract?

Kenny will not only be here all of 2024 he will be here for all of 2025

    He’s cheap and under contract

Wilson is 150% the starter. He had options, and he wouldn't have come to Pittsburgh if he didn't have that confidence.

Regarding the deal, I'm stoked. I like Pickett more than many, and I think he deserved a shot under a real OC. But I also think Russ, even on a down year, is likely better than what we would have gotten from Pickett right now. It's a good win-now move that doesn't mortgage the future. A solid roster finally has a QB who can be a game-manager but has true upside.

This roster, with aged-out Big Ben and Pickett at the helm, won 10, 9, and 9 games over the last few seasons. You can expect that and then some in 2024, I feel.

You still think Russell Wilson wouldn't sign a one year minimum salary .

Mason made it clear that he wanted to test FA

He can not have a deal worked for another hour and 57 minutes

And why would they want to bid on him when a much better option was available

    Nothing more to it

1.2 million, I don't see him playing very hard for that.. The 38mill Denver owes him is guaranteed. So he will get that if he is on the bench or not

I tend to agree. While I find it hard to believe they are completely giving up on Kenny at this point, this has to be somewhat deflating for him. I remember last off-season that Pickett was the crowned prince of the Burgh and the next great Steelers QB. I think most all of us bought into the hype based on a couple of 4th quarter drives. I think Kenny may have bought into the hype a little himself. What a difference a year makes. I feel sorry for Kenny and Mike Tomlin has committed coaching malpractice with him at this point in his career. He should have kicked Canada to the curb when he had an opportunity and failed to do so. Tomlin and his coaching staff have negatively impacted the trajectory of Mason Rudolph's career and now they're doing the same with Kenny.

I think you are missing the point that he is playing this year for a bigger contract next year plus

    He will give his all

    Riiiiight...:thumbs up:

Wilson was cheap and probably worth the risk, but I'm not sure he was a better option. Time will tell but Wilson will be 36 this season and has seen his better days. Mason is 28 and may just be coming into his own as an NFL QB.

That's the problem. They won't attempt to fix the QB situation until he's failed so miserably that the only humane thing would be to drag him out back and shoot him.

Signing Wilson is a bungee cord on a busted trunk lid.

IIRC, Lance had a season ending injury and went to IR. Pickett has had injuries, but never to permanent IR.

    Agree on the Wilson part

Regarding Kenny if he doesn’t make big strides this year they will still keep him next year because he’s cheap and adequate as a #2 or #3

And then they can address a long term QB option a year from now

We'll see. I think he may have a major chip on his shoulder and will want to prove the naysayers wrong after what happened in Denver. He says he's like to win a couple of more Super Bowls before he retires and we could use a couple of more for the trophy case. It's been too long since we've had one.

That's the only thing I don't like about this. Does this prolong the Kenny experiment by another year or two? I was hoping that we would have a definitive answer regarding Kenny Pickett this upcoming season, but if he's backing up Russell Wilson it may be 2025 at the earliest before we know whether or not the Steelers need to look elsewhere for their next long-term solution at quarterback.

If Kenny does not excel between now and opening day and winds up being the backup then I believe he will be viewed as a backup in 2025 and they will look elsewhere

But even if they draft a QB in 2025 it would still be good to have KSP here

I think it may also increase the likelihood that the Steelers draft a QB in the rounds 3-5 this year.
