One hell of an UDFA running back that for some reason @mac daddyo@mac daddyo didn't fawn over. :hmm:

Najee is OK in those stats as well, but you’d want to see better for a guy his size.

Najee early career he was dancing, spinning and leaping trying to be a shifty quick RB…… “The Warren Effect” made him wake up and realize his “Top RB” status on the team was in jeopardy and he got serious and started to run more like a Big Back should……….

Just another benefit of signing Warren!!!!

Only Chubb out performs him there. That’s pretty amazing for an UDFA.

Have to wonder what the Steelers are planning for Harris. They aren’t eager to jump on his 5th and they were meeting with RB’s at the combine.

I wouldn't hate to see them feature Warren more and spell him with a bigger back. Warren is just a perfect type of back for the modern NFL.

I think Harris will want/be paid more than what his skillset brings to the table. We would certainly miss some of his leadership, but there are tons of players who could bring this offense what he brings and likely at a cheaper price. The RB position is one that is full of talent, shorter career spans, and full of turnover. It used to be a build around position, now its more of an afterthought.

He might given the comments he has made about the position but I would also hope he remembers how that played out for everyone. Teams just aren’t going to break the bank for RB’s anymore.

His option doesnt cost a lot so I would be surprised if they don’t pick it up but not sure he will get a second contract just because the nature of the position. Tomlin loves him though so he has that going for him.

But unless he has a monster season under Smith, the smarter business decision would be to roll with Warren and draft a RB (which they may do this season) and let Harris walk when his contract is up.

The first I heard of Warren was reading about him on NFL.com right after the draft. They had an article about who the best UDFA signings were and they mentioned Warren as being a steal for the Steelers to get after that draft class.

Blast answered for me :drinks: The days of breaking the bank for a running back are in the rear view. He probably will be offered the 5th year option and if he squawks about it then ba bye.

But Warren is a different matter. They can extend him without braking the bank. He is due 989.000 this season and will be a RFA next season. He's a keeper!

Keeo the one two punch going as it will keep both healthy longer. Just don't force it just to make the carriers 60-40 or 50/50. The OC and HC have to be able to adjust carries on the fly in a game as to what is working vs the well Najee ran on first and second lets give Warren third down carry and then next series let's switch to Warren on first and second down. They have to adjust better to what is working in that particular game, what the defense is stopping and what they are not.

If I’m correct Harris 5th year costs $7M or thereabouts

That would put him at #10 based on last years salaries

Based on nfl.com he was #12 last year for running backs so the 5th year is in Mr Rodgers neighborhood

"based on last years salaries" - yes, but that cap # goes up every season and who knows how high it will be in 2025. it will be a bargain, #trustme

Short of a total CRAPPOLA season by him this year (or significant injury setback), he will get that 5th year option offer. We should have he and Warren together at least for 2 more seasons. Bring Wilson in for 2 years and MAKE A RUN AT IT.

that is what Khan is thinking..... (sources tell me)

does not matter what he does THIS year, as the guaranteed option has to be picked up in early May. But I agree, should be done.

So, the cap increasing for teams each year has nothing really to do with where Harris ranks among RBs in contract value (expressed as Average Per Year, APY). That only changes if one of their contracts change, which would be the case for Harris in 2025 if his fifth year option is picked up. I get your point about $7M being less of a percentage of the team's overall cap in 2025 than in 2023/24, but that's a separate point. As far as picking the option up, the Steelers have until May to decide so how Harris subsequently performs in 2024 has no bearing on it.

That said, there's a difference between cap number and APY with player contracts, and the two are often conflated. Harris ranked 18th among RBs in 2023 with an APY of $3.2M/yr, according to OTC. APY is more often referred to since it more accurately reflects the value of the contract for a given player. Teams then structure the contract to best account for the dollars within their respective cap constraints. So Harris actually counted $3.6M against the cap last year, and will increase to $4.1M in 2024, though his APY will remain the same at $3.2M/yr.

Back to Harris' fifth-year option, if you're focusing on the $7M, you're looking at his cap number for 2025. But if you fold the $7M into the rest of his rookie contract his APY moves to $4M (~$20M over five years), which would place him 15th amongst the 2023 RB list.
