We're gonna need him for awhile, no doubt about that.

Good move. He is one of the best in the business when it comes down to the cap. Every season his name seems to be thrown around for a GM job. The Rooneys must be giving nice raises every year in order to maintain his services.

No offense to Omar, but I wonder... what makes him qualified to be a GM? He is a wizard with salary caps, but what's his background with players? Besides just being around the front office, is there any reason to believe he'd be a good evaluator of talent? I'd hire him in a minute to run my books, but to pick players?

I'm not saying he can't, I just don't know if there's any reason to believe he could, besides just working with Colbert.

Thank God! Most common fans have no clue who he is, but as I said before, if he hadn't been here the last several years we wouldn't have had the success we have had. Guy is gonna be a GREAT GM one day soon.

This is just my opinion but I think he has much more involvement with the draft than you are giving him credit for. Sure, Colbert and Tomlin are probably the final decision makers but there is more than likely a significant amount of input from Omar as well.

I don't have the article but yes, he is much more involved past being a cap specialist. He's intricately involved in a lot of areas.

On a srs note TE, it does appear that he is in on personnel decisions. I wouldn't have thought that at all. Glad I asked for the article now. :D

Okay, that's cool. I'm not really surprised he has input, but we've heard endless tales of his fiscal expertise, and I don't think I've heard one thing about his opinion on a player, or anything unrelated to money. For all I know he's the best scout the world has ever seen, but I've never heard about it. And as awesome as fiscal expertise is to have, it's not half as important as choosing the right players for your team, a GM's main job.

well to me its not liek ti matters if kahn is in on the draft or not.. its not liek our drafts have been anything better then average anyway.... we thought we had a great draft this year and it ended up not so good (a least for this season) basically 2 season ending injuries (including DD that was out 75% of the season) and one now released.. adams missed half the season.. so what did we really get ... full season from rainey but hes not 100% gone.. 50% from adams .. 25% from DD and 0% IR from the linebacker.. forgot his name.. so i dont think wether kahn is there inthe draft room or not makes much difference... but i love him in the cap/negotiations room

he started in NO for the saints as a ball boy. similar to our OC's path. he worked his way up and then graduated college and earned his way to management. so he has been through some of the process. he's a very smart guy that i think absorbs as much knowledge as he can. he's also seen some good players and how it's done here. i'm sure he works with the scouts and the process here all these years. that would be my call on his ability to make the jump.

I had that same question, Snack, in another post. Seems like a great guy to have on the calculator but can he determine whether or not a CB rotates his hips well enough to be effective at the next level?

The only piece of good news I have heard since our off-season started prematurely...
However, I do have to wonder...
If he had left after all these restructures, and such,
Would the incoming guy in charge of getting us under the cap, be left holding the bag that Khan left him?
He has seemed like a genius at letting us keep a lot of talented players, that we thought would be gone, but, apparentley, we are in deeper trouble, than we thought, financially...
At some point, you have to "pay the piper", for extending/re-structuring all this money, I don`t pretend to know all the ins and outs of it, but it seems that we have just been more or less deferring money that is owed, to later dates.
That`s what he has been doing for us, and I just have a gut feeling, that if Omar was to leave, the next guy to take his job, would be in a bad spot, because of things that Omar arranged while he was the man in charge.
The man who would replace him, might just come in, and look over the paperwork, and go...
"What the hell am I supposed to do with this mess"?!?
I hope that`s not the case, and I am very relieved we still have Omar here, to figure out how to finagle all the financial details of how to keep a competitive team on the field, and remain under the salary cap.
It just sounds like from what I have been reading, that we are gonna have a harder time doing that, than most of us are expecting.
At least we still have the man who has been doing the job here, to continue doing it.
My gut feeling is, that whoever we brought in to replace him, would have no clue what Kahn`s plan was, as he juggled all the contracts, and wouldn`t be able to get any advice/input, from the man they replaced, since he would have moved on to another team.
Almost sounds like he is becoming too important to replace.
Not necessarily a good thing, from a business standpoint, and gives him some leverage.
On the other hand, I`m pretty sure the Chief, passed along a wealth of knowledge, to his sons, regarding not letting yourself become too dependent on any one person in your organization...
GO STEELERS. Glad we still have Omar to do what he does this year. Seems like he will be earning his money, with the challenges coming this offseason.
Colbert has made clear, we should expect major changes to the roster this year.
Some of those, are bound to free up money, also.
