If true this changes my mind on things.

If he is going to be pouting and quitting on plays again because they are going with Pickett, see if you can get a 2nd for him and do it. This could be why they were looking at WR’s so heavily at the Combine.

I think this means Pickett really is the guy they are rolling with. He wouldn’t want out for any other reason.

Well, here is an interesting video about our new WR Coach in Zach Azzanni:

Very, very demanding, tough and willing to place the best players who put forth the best attitude over coddling Star WRs?! Sign me up all day for this! If Diontae wants to complain... trade his ass.

More info about him can be found via this article by Josh Carney via SteelersDepot here.

Chiefs officially have placed the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag on CB L'Jarius Sneed. They are open to trading him for the right price.

If the rumors are true, maybe the Chiefs, who definitely need WR's, would like to take DJ as part of the trade?

    Agreed... that said...

Diontae isn't a talentless WR by any means. He did make a Pro Bowl with a HOF QB in Big Ben... though a Big Ben who's abilities were quickly fading. Imagine what Diontae could do with one of the most gifted QBs we have seen in over a generation in Mahomes.

    I'd shutter at the thought.

But, we would have Sneed to cover him. :lolol:

Perhaps but Mahomes has shown he is far too difficult to be limited by locking down just one Receiver. Hell, San Fran's game plan was rock solid in the Super Bowl and they still couldn't stop Travis Kelce from reaching the endzone. I seriously doubt Sneed or many CBs that Johnson and Mahomes face will cause them problems. Outside of Ahmad Sauce Gardner and maybe Patrick Surtain II along with Joey Porter Jr?!... not to many others come to mind.

I would add Jalen Ramsey to this list but I do believe his best days sadly are behind him. Moving him to safety though?!... now Miami will have something special there.

I created a post topic about getting rid of Dionte before all this even came out. Everyone said I was crazy for wanting to get rid of such a talent and that we just need to put up with his attitude because all receivers are like that today.

I understand why he wants out .. contract year and he doesn’t trust KP to maximize his potential to receive a big pay day. Now that teams know he wants out we won’t sniff a high draft pick for him. It stinks. If we can get a three I would be happy.

I don’t think he will do as good as everyone thinks he will with another team unless he recommits himself. I really got disgusted with him this year. Would rather have a less talented guy in the team who gives it his all on every play.

with all that being said I really do hope the Steelers are prudent and they bring in solid competition for Pickett. Another bad season under him is going to raise frustration with a lot more players other than DJ.

That’s what I’m worried about. They know they’re getting a guy that drops passes, goes backwards after the catch and gives up on plays and when things don’t go his way he throws a temper tantrum.

Part of what makes Mahomes great is what he does on broken plays, but that requires receivers who don't give up on plays early and find ways to get open while their quarterback buys time. Johnson does not do that well, which limits how well he fits in Kansas City's offense.

They won’t give us the first overall. But if the right player is there, maybe a package of DJ + mid-round pick can get us the 9th overall

He had 2 drops in 2023....you need to let the 2020 season go.

    The past 3 seasons he had a drop % of 3.0, 4.8, and 2.3.

    For comparison in 2023

    Tyreek Hill was 7.0
    DK Metcalf was 5.9
    Travis Kelce was 5.8
    Amari Cooper was 5.5
    Mike Evans was 5.1
    Stefon Diggs was 5.0
    Amon-Ra St. Brown was 4.9
    DeVonte Smith was 4.5
    AJ Brown was 4.4
    George Kittle was 4.4
    Ja'Marr Chase was 3.4
    CeeDee Lamb was 3.3
    DeAndre Hopkins was 2.9

Overall, there were 114 receivers with higher drop percentages than DJ.

The drops were always overblown because he had such a bad case for like 8-10 games in his second year that everyone just hyper focused on every one that got through. He's generally been a sure handed player, who runs really great routes and is good with the ball in his hands when he's not trying to do too much. Over the past two years his opportunities had been so limited that he tried to hit a homerun every time he got the ball and it led to a lot of east-west and losing a yard or two on a catch trying to hit it big. DJ would be an easy fix. Draw up a lot of timing routes, stuff that gets him one on one against the #2 CB and get a QB to deliver the ball in rhythm and on target so he is in the best position to get YAC.

He has been a fish out of water because Pickett has struggled so hard with the timing routes/placement, and also has a really hard time with scripted play. He too often bails out and tries "improvising" as he seems to be far more comfortable doing that than working the field in phase. This is where DJ struggles. 18 isn't good at "feeling" the defense and getting open in a break down situation. Him and his QB often end up on the wrong page when this happens.

DJ is a really, really good player. We just haven't used him to his strengths since Ben left (and really that isn't totally on the coaching staff, the QB we drafted just didn't pan out). If we truly want to run with Kenny in 2024, then shipping DJ off and taking a first round receiver wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. We'd really feel his loss, but were gonna struggle throwing the ball anyways.

Seriously? A trade like that would be 10x more stupid for the Bears than trading a 2nd for Claypool. Maybe DJ + Pick 20 + some additional draft capital.

Some folks are really overstating DJ’s trade value. I think @mac daddyo@mac daddyo pegged it right at a 3rd round pick.

Why trade him? Let him play out his contract this year.
Hell, he should ball out knowing he is an UFA the following year if he wants to get that last big contract.
If i remember correctly, from reading post here, bigk should be making leaps and bounds this year too making DJ look even better.
Hell, he might get a Mike Evans contract from a team next year.

Congratulations you went to all that trouble to prove your point. What about going backwards after the catch, yac, yac after contact, blocking and giving up on plays? What about fighting with coaches and teammates?

you want a divided locker room go ahead and keep the guy. Much greater talents with attitude problems have Ben traded and cut. The guy is going to be a problem if he stays with the Steelers this year. He is the one imitating this trade talk. He already has threatened to do a hold in. He is setting the precedent for GP.

last thing you want when trying to develop a QB is a guy who isn’t supportive of him. Not saying KP is the answer but it appears the Steelers are choosing him so you need guys around him who are going to support him.
