Those of us old enough to remember those years knew how great he was. Him, Jack Ham, and Jack Lambert were probably the greatest linebacking corps in history.

RIP Andy! The Jacks are known to the casual fan as the All Timers from the LB group (justifiably so), but Andy was also a key cog in that great defensive machine. Old school Steelers fans will never forget him!

As a kid, Andy Russell's football card stood out to me because before the Steelers were good, his card said all-star. Then in the America's Game series, he tells the story of Chuck Noll's teaching moment, that if Russell turned his foot a certain way, it would make him a better player.

On December 27, 1975, he set the NFL playoff record for a returned touchdown–93 yards in a Three Rivers Stadium victory over the Baltimore Colts. Some have claimed it as the longest football play from scrimmage in time duration.

Joe Greene said Andy was so slow on that play that he had to block the same guy 3 times.

Someone else said they were afraid they would get a delay of game penalty.

    :smiley1:

    RIP sir

Rocky gets the notoriety but he was not the only veteran

Andy left the team in the 60’s for 2-3 years to serve a military commitment in the Army

Sad news in Steeler Land. RIP Andy Russell.

Was drafted in the 16th round in 1963. Left the Steelers in 64 and 65 to fulfill his Army commitment. He was a lieutenant.

Won two Super Bowls in 75 and 76. 7 Pro Bowls. Played in all 14 games each season. Retired after the 76 Super Bowl win. Played 11 years. Great player and well respected.

Sad sad day for Steelers football. Andy was one of the most underrated players in the NFL probably because was on such a great overall defense. The skies above my house have been raining off and on all day and now I really find out why. Such a class citizen. RIP Andy Russell
