At least Art II to put up the facade that the Steelers needed wholesale changes, after 7 years without a single playoff win...7 years. And efforts have been made to indicate real, significant changes were made, but were they really?

1.) Yanking Canada as OC - the most obvious change ever needed, but time will tell how much was Canada vs how much was him just following Tomlin's "pee your pants" orders on offense. The shocking part of the the Canada at OC was how on earth did the team feel he was worthy of brining back in 2023; how could men, with functioning brains, think that was the wise way to continue? How could anyone conclude this? This really hurts confidence for the entire team decisions moving forward, regardless of who decided what. If it was a Tomlin decision that Art allowed then shame on Art for allowing such a horrid, insane decision. And Shame on Tomlin for thinking it was the wise move.

2.) Firing Jackson as WR coach - Citing his "lack of discipline" as the reason for his firing, all I can muster is "really?" If that isn't a projection from Art/Tomlin on Jackson for a team-wide problem with the head coach, nothing is. The head coach is in charge of things like team discipline, if not, who is? And yet they fire the WR coach for this malady. Horse s--t. I'm not defending Jackson as WR coach, lord knows the unit performed poorly, but the reason they cited was total BS. They made Jackson the scapegoat for something that is Tomlin's problem.

3.) Hiring Smith as OC. On the surface, Smith last coached a team that averaged one more point than Pgh did in PPG (17 compared to 18). Not anything to write home about. And that's who we hired, out of all the other choice there was. But I think what attracted them was a history in establishing a rushing game (although that's pretty easy with a Henry in his prime). Does Smith offer a major difference from our past? Or will he simply serve as a Tomlin flunkie and "yes man?" We are about to find out, and should know by September. If there is gonna be a difference we will know by then.

4.) The cutting of Trubisky, Chuks and Harvin - the most real of the moves so far. Mitch was pure garbage, should have never been brought back from 2022. Chuks was a below average OT being paid like a competent one and Harvin was nothing but Tomlin's "buddy" who kept his job on that characteristic alone. He sucked but somehow kept his roster spot; only on a Tomlin team. But the heard needs culled beyond just those 3 players. It looks like Cam's "buddy status" will allow him to keep his part-time job being paid like a ProBowl player, all because he kisses Tomlin @ss. Is that any way to run a professional sports team? You keep paying a 35-year-old $22 mill a year who got 2 sacks last year? All because "he's buddies" with the head coach? Pat Pete is attempting to attain the same status with his praising of team positions, will it work? Could easily be.

5.) Several other "stale" assistant coaches were kept on a staff that wreaks of indiscipline, laziness, nepotism-like teacher status. Eddie Faulkner (RBs), Pat Meyer (OL) and Mike Sullivan (QBs) were all retained. Rooney tried to puff up wth coaching staff by adding a few positions to the cheapest coaching staff in the league (Tom Arth, QBs coach). Despite the few new arrivals the coaching staff still has that same "same ole', same ole'" smell to it. Tomlin has not had to change really, it's the same old Tomlin way, no payoff wins in 7 years.

6.) Kenny still the starting QB - make no mistake. Reading the tea leaves, Kenny will be listed as the starting QB by Sept., regardless of who they add in the meantime, or who they lose (Mason). Art and Tomlin managed to mouth the words "QB competition" but that is all they were: words. All one had to do was listen to new OC Smith in his entrance interview and it became apparent who the starting QB was: Kenny all the way; it's the only QB he mentioned. It's Kenny's job just because he was a 1st round pick and that's the end of discussion. Art even mentioned Kenny as a QB he "didn't give up on yet." So that is it. Imagine if the 9ers stayed so bull headed on a QB just because he was a 1st round pick; they would have been sitting at home for the Super Bowl if they ran their team as the Steelers do. Trey Lance would still be their starting QB.

Major changes in Pgh? I'm not so sold. Tomlin is still the head coach and with him, all his crap is still going on with this team: undisciplined, antiquated, paranoid, good ole boys, nepotism, stale, uncreative, unaccountable, bull headed.

Very well thought out post and interesting thoughts. We’ll see how all of the “changes” pan out but I am somewhat surprised that more heads didn’t roll on the coaching staff. As for Kenny being the presumed starting quarterback, he absolutely does not deserve that designation. He deserves an opportunity to win the job but he’s done nothing to be anointed QB1. He LOST his job to Mason Rudolph this season and if Mason re-signs if anything he should be the presumed QB1.

As for the snide remarks which add absolutely nothing to the discussion, there are a few members of our board who need to get over themselves. It seems their only objective is to interject comments simply meant to provoke or to throw out ridiculous accusations that just because you have a certain viewpoint you must be a troll. Do better, guys. If you don’t like a post, scroll on to the next one.

Blah blah blah Tomlin sucks again…..Blah blah blah Kenny sucks and Tomlin sucks and Rooney supports this suck.

I’m not here to defend Huck’s position but it’s more than just Tomlin sucks, blah, blah, blah and Kenny sucks blah, blah, blah. He does provide some supporting information to reinforce his argument. It’s fine to disagree, but it should be done on the merits and without petty name calling and provocative comments just because you might disagree. That has become the MO of some members of this board it seems.

Jack, just about every point the OP made boils down to 'Tomlin sucks', 'Tomlin flunkie', 'Tomlin buddy', etc. There was little in the way of substantiation, mostly just arguing in a circle: this player/coach sucks because he was hired by Tomlin and he sucks (or they're buds so he hired them); this player/coach is still here and sucks, because Tomlin didn't fire them and he sucks (or they're buds so he retained them).

I have no issue with anyone taking a critical view of the team or its particular moves (I agree with the OP that the decision to keep Canada was a terrible one that cost young players a year of development, and vets a year of production). But to me this post indeed was a lot of Tomlin/Rooney sucks with a lot of blathering in between. When that blather is a combination of unsubstantiated claims, repeated criticisms, and derogative commentary directed at Tomlin and Rooney, I think you paint an image of yourself as someone whose primary goal is more to get attention, not spur insightful discussion.

Agree. The original post is little more than just a more eloquent way of bashing Tomlin than the one liners that are most common here. I’ve been leaning towards going a different direction at head coach since 2018, but it’s always been a close call for me.

What much of the negativity about Tomlin and Rooney seems to skirt past is the role of Colbert in the team’s struggles to get back to the top, which is becoming more and more clear each year. The drafting was not good in the last few years of the Colbert era, and that’s a big part of the problems we’re seeing now. I’m not going to get into it now (no time), but a look back at recent drafts shows how some of our roster weaknesses have materialized.

How are they cheap? They use the best brand of duct tape on the weight benches!

I know this is an old joke and all but I’ll bet if you walked into the Steelers weight room today and you are a lifting junkie you would more than likely be in heaven. For the life of me though I still can’t understand why James Harrison is not our strength and conditioning coach. I mean he did burn a bridge on his way out but he could probably still bench the same one for 25 reps.

Something tells me they quit repairing the benches with the duct tape and just put the rolls where the weights should be.
    THANKS TOMLIN!!!!
