They blow all their money on a defense that cant stop any team with a pulse or the Arizona Cardinals which suck. We have horrible cap hits for each of the following. TJ Watt ( at least he is good), Heyward.......over the hill and shell of his former self, Minka F....did he play this year and when he did...you and I did not notice it., We spend the most on defense in entire league and cant stop any QB with a pulse.
If we actually were elite on d like the chiefs, it would make sense. Biggest issue is not QB...its the d.

TJ is a beast and will be paid accordingly.

Minkah was hurt this last year and deployed differently. Over the last five seasons with the Steelers, he was all pro three times.

Heyward is a fair point, but he had an incredible career with us and his cap is indicative of an older veteran superstar (see Ben, Troy, etc).

If you want to complain about anyone, I would say Highsmith has been a swing and miss (for what he is getting paid).

I think that we have pretty well paid players compared to market value on defense, we just got butchered with injuries this year. We certainly still have a couple holes, but we really need to remember how good this defense has been for the majority of the last 2 years. Kenny has averaged like 16 ppg in the games he's started and has gone 14-10 in those games. How do we score 16 points per game and win nearly 60% of the games (that is a 10 win pace)? Good defense. They haven't been perfect, but it is impossible in today's NFL to shut everyone down. The caliber of offensive play is too good and the league makes it so that the offense is favored by the rules (contact/tackling rules, never calling holding, etc.).

We aren't really far off from being the same defense the Chiefs were this year. For all our injuries, we only gave up 2.6 points/game more than them. We gave up 50 ypg more than them and its all in passing ypgs (we were right next to each other in rushing ypg allowed). The main difference there is they have 2 good corners and we have 1. They got 10 more sacks than us but we got 10 more turnovers than them. We are actually VERY comparable defenses outside of they just had a bit better ILB play (injury and just a bit better players) and they have McDuffie and Sneed and we only have Porter.

When healthy this defense is among the league's best. Our ACTUAL biggest issue is that while we are similar in PPG allowed, we didn't score with the Chiefs this year. KC was 22.2 PPG/15.8 Allowed for a +6.4 differential.... we were 17.8 PPG/ 18.4 Allowed for a -0.6 diff. Most of the best teams in the league are positive by 5+, this just means that if we were able to find a way to score 22-23ish PPG (putting us somewhere between 15th and 12th league wide) we'd be a team that could contend. The offense is the issue. It just is. We are slightly better play in the secondary away from being a truly elite defense. From there we just need to SCORE SOME DAMN POINTS.

Biggest issue is the QB. The fact that you think otherwise invalidates this entire post.

Those were easy cap casualties. There is likely more to come.

What kind of return could the Steelers get in TJ trade?

    It was speculated....

    https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2...de-kenny-pickett-matt-canada-mike-tomlin-nfl/

“Going into the following season (2025), T.J.’s gonna be 31 years old. If you have to look at another quarterback at that point, then you’re drafting one. Rookies don’t come in and win, so T.J.’s 32, T.J.’s 33, and he’s past his prime.”

“If the Steelers traded, let’s just say, T.J. Watt at the deadline, I can guarantee you, they would’ve gotten more than two firsts,” Jerry added. “They probably would’ve gotten two firsts and a good player, two firsts and third, two firsts and maybe even a second.”

I'm not against the idea of trading TJ. This is about the last chance of getting any substantial return for him. But I'm not for trading him either. Call me indifferent I guess. The thing that makes him tradeable is the emergence of Herbig and they can find a solid #2 or #3 in FA for depth. Won't be as productive as TJ, but opens up the wallet to fill other needs. But it's really hard to trade a guy that's a fan favorite like TJ, he's gdamn living legend.

As for the D, I thought they overperformed down the stretch especially considering all of the injuries. I think P2, Katee and Neal get cut or restructured/extended to open up more cap space.

Since sacks don’t matter anymore, Highsmith was on par if not better than the DPOY

Cam is gonna have to take a paycut or wind up getting cut.

OP is getting drug, but the point still stands ... highest paid defense and the results were pretty poor. ... irregardless of injuries.

KC defense is a lot like those great Patriots defenses, not a lot of stars, but just really well coached. They always seem to come up with timely plays to get off the field when they have to.

I think that is what I took away most from the Superbowl, both teams' defenses were pretty impressive.
