Rooney, what a rebel! Imagine letting HC choose their own coordinators. Witchcraft.

Owner/GMs need to make the decisions with some input from the HC.
The HC hasn’t proved he’s a mastermind at anything.
    He’s a nice guy , big deal..

Did anyone else find it interesting that Rooney refused to talk about Tomlin’s extension and said that nothing was imminent? I’m sure it’s going to happen, but in the past Rooney was a little more vocal about making it happen and wanting it to happen.

His playoff disappointment was clearly on display however. IMO MT better win a playoff game soon or maybe the Owner will finally come to his damn senses.

The hiring of Austin hasn't been horrible, they finished 6th in points allowed and top ten in takeaways.

Well, Heyward, Watt, and Minkah only played two full games together the whole season, also their top 3 ILBs and top 4-5 safeties missed a lot of time.

If You honestly believe M Tomlin can hire any OC he wants... I guess You can believe anything. They are no way saying....Here is a blank check....hire whomever......What Rooney should have said was the truth.....Tomlin will be in charge of picking from the list of OCs that we ok, and that are within budget.

No $hit. You think the owner is going to say.....Yeah He has a certain budget, and a certain amount of Guys. Hell No. Every freaking reporter in the Steelers organization....not YouTube, and Twitter guys, but Guys that are in the organization all the time say Rooney, whomever the GM is a t the time, and the coach all get together for the hires....every single one of them. You do know that there isn't a set price on how much a coach, or a coordinators make right....so just by using Your mind.....Do You honestly think that they will give a blank check to Tomlin so He can hire anyone He wants, and do you honestly think the owner would tell You??? LoL. I tell You what... when whomever gets hired gets hired let's look at How much He makes compared to the other OCs.

I’m not sure I want Rooney hiring the OC either. The Steelers should really consider bringing in an outside consultant to assist with the hire given their unfavorable history with OC hires. Other teams have done that in the past and it never hurts to have a set of eyes outside the organization providing some objective input.

What bums me is Rooney has taken false hope from winning the games to keep Tomlin. My gut is had we lost out it would have been a house cleaning, now as I thought the worst happened, we won a few games and now we are keeping Tomlin and he is hiring the OC. It sucks to know in you gut your expectations now need to be lowered and yes root for the team, just cant let it ruin my Sunday's. He is enamored that coach can reach professional footballs players that are paid hundreds of thousands or millions to keep them motivated. WTF, as Noll said if I have to motivate you I fire you. The head coach should be an excellent game planner, developer of talent, possess the ability to make in game adjustments, have the pulse of the team and set the accountability tone in the locker room. To be impressed that he can keep professionals motivated and focused is sad as that should be a given. Wash, rinse and repeat is coming.

Rooney has trained at the Mike Tomlin school of obsfuscation. He may never come to his senses. I suspect an 0-17 season will be necessary, and its just a matter of time under a lost HC. Hey, at least the players like him and his "game was lost before it was played" gameplans.

There isn't an OC candidate anywhere that would cost mor than the Steelers will pay. I mean, there are only 30 such jobs out there and hundreds that want that job.

Now, if Tomlin is so dumb (he may very well be) that he tries to hire Kyle Shanahan, then yeah, we probably can't afford his demotion from an actual successful HC (we can only dream) to OC.

I don't know why this has to be difficult. Of course the owner signs the checks, just as Tomlin is a part of the hiring process. No one is arguing that the owner doesn't have the power to veto; it's his money. But it certainly is not Rooney and Kahn, two people with zero hands-on experience with an actual NFL coordinator, independently coming up with a group of names from whom Tomlin must select.

As for the salary comparison, individual coordinator and assistant coach compensations are usually not disclosed compared to more prominent positions like the HC.
