Could he pull off what the Chiefs just did against the Ravens?

Fangio didn't do much with Miami, and got let go after one season, Flores is under contract so he's not making a lateral move.

The Steelers don't get credit for that win, if you listen to some fans they only won because the Ravens dropped passes.

Injuries gutted the middle of the defense, but it is also the scheme Tomlin favors. This has been a problem since well before Austin took over as DC.

My biggest problem with Austin was how slowly they made adjustments. For example, it took them the entire first half against the Patriots. That was inexcusable.

6th least amount of points allowed overall. Second least amount of 4th qtr points allowed. 5th in takeaways. Won 17 straight while leading at any point during the 4th qtr. All while dealing with major injuries.

Sounds like a defensive coaching staff pretty good at making adjustments to me.

I didn't write that they were unable to make adjustments. I wrote that they were too slow in making them, though they did fall apart completely after injuries to one or two players in the losses to the Cardinals and Colts. The worse failure was being so slow to adapt to what the Patriots did to them. It took them until after halftime and this was against an offense what was wretched all season.

Were they good at making adjustments or did they have playmakers who forced turnovers that kept saving their asses? But hey, ignore the statistical categories that did not make them look so good. Ignore the way they collapsed in some ugly losses. Ignore the massive defensive failures during their three-game losing streak and again in the playoff game.

I didn’t accuse you of writing that they were unable to make adjustments. I just used the facts to debunk your assertion that they were too slow to make them. As I illustrated with the stats/facts, they were good at making defensive adjustments this year. To finish 6th in scoring defense(2nd in 4th qtr points allowed) with the injuries that they had and the offense that they played opposite of, is pretty impressive.

I didn’t ignore anything. What stats have I ignored? You just cherry pick and post examples of personal criticisms that you have. If you’ve got some stats that disprove my opinion then post them. I’m the only one using stats here.

Unlike you, I choose to look at the bigger entire picture when making assessments vs nitpicking and only highlighting perceived mistakes to justify irrational whining.

Yea, they were good at making adjustments on defense this season. No, they didn’t play perfectly.

I am going crazy watching Vrabel just sitting their available to anyone that has a Defensive opening!!!

Mike Tomlin, DC Vrabel, OC Smith and why not Mike Munchak to round it out. Dream Team?

He posts a lot of great information. I know you two clash on Lamar Jackson, but please don't compare him to some troll. He's not that.

I have posted on multiple message boards with him, and he always brings a ton of information and insight to the table. Steelersfan43 a very good poster and a good dude.

Don't let a disagreement on one issue cloud your judgement of the guy.

You and I don't agree on everything, but we can still agree with the other and respect the other person's view of things. :drinks:

I doubt he comes here, too but that sort of thing happens all the time. Smith just signed as our OC.

You didn't debunk anything. They were able to make adjustments from game-to-game, but we saw them be slow to make adjustments in games many times. We saw it in the three-game losing streak. They were very slow to adjust in all three of those games. The loss to the Patriots was the worst example. That was a disgracefully-bad offense, but it took the Steelers an entire half to figure out what New England was doing to them. That is being slow to adjust.

I thought a Steelers fan would actually be familiar with what happened during that streak, but I can add some statistical evidence to help you keep up. The Patriots were tied with the Panthers for fewest points per game in the NFL this season at 13.9, but they had been even worse going into the game against the Steelers. They scored only 13 total points in the three previous games combined. They tore right through the Steelers' defense for three touchdowns in the first half. Once Pittsburgh did adjust, New England couldn't do much. That means the adjustments were there to be made, but Austin and/or Tomlin were too slow to make them.

I can look at both the big picture and in-game situations when making my evaluation rather than settling for a more simplistic approach like yours.

Steven Ridley was considered for the DC position because his 2018 Mock draft is still being talked about on thesteelersfans.com
