    @Karl@Karl

since you’ve spent some time around nfl teams. Any idea how a prospective OC/DC candidate prepares for the interviews? Would someone watch tape of the Steelers and talk about what he sees? How he would utilize specific players? Areas of concern? Or is it more based on philosophy etc?

To a large degree they have been preparing for the interview their entire life

But I understand the intent of the question

If you are Matt Canada, you burn all past tape off games you ran. Then you get a hypnotist, dig up some blackmail material and offer a substantial bribe. Follow that up with a lot of prayer.

The NFL world is actually a small world.
I can't say exactly how all this goes down but I was around for that staff at Washington that included Kyle, McVay, Lafluer so many others that they squandered.
It just goes to show, you can have a great coach but if the organization is screwed up. so shall be the team.

Someone on here said that when scouting players, teams in turn scout coaches. That is true.

Sean McVay has a relatively short career. Yes, he has great linage but it didn't really come into play so much.
He was a Wide Receiver that couldn't do, so he taught. He Jon Gruden gave him a shot as an Offensive assistant (I believe it was).
But brother Jay (UFL) was looking for help and McVay wound up on his offensive staff.
There wasn't much of an interview and not much of a body of work so he got in based on word of mouth and nepotism.

This is where I kind of come in.
Mike Shanahan was next in line to fix the Washington Redskins. This was again through some networking.
McVay was also getting inputs and catching the attention of others and working under Kyle.
He also had moved from WR's to TE's coaching (Resume' is growing)
When the RGIII drama sunk the Shanahan's (Kyle and Mike) ship, Jay Gruden was brought in and Jay kept him on, and promoted him to OC.
It was there McVay's resume became very strong.
Kirk Cousins has labored behind RGIII despite outperforming him. McVay finally got the go ahead to stick with Cousins and his work with Cousins and the underwhelming talent on offense really captured the attention of his peers.
It was obvious in a few moments of conversation that McVay had a step on others, and as I recall the 49ers were very interested in him. Instead, he went the Rams.

I can't imagine what the preparation for the interview process was.
But I've heard they interviewed him, pointed out several of their key players on the roster and poked around what he envisioned in utilizing the talent.

McVay had worked under Shanahan who brought the Alex Gibbs' Denver 'Wide-Zone run' attack.
This use the 12 (1 RB, 2 TEs) and 13 (1 RB, 3 TEs) sets a lot, making for a very versatile offense.
He also incorporated some Jay's QB friendly schemes from the Bengals.
This played well for Kirk Cousins, but many realized McVay was wasting away in Washington. (same for Lafluer, Kyle, others)
The Rams rolled the dice and won.

So, to sum it up, you build a good resume and being the NFL is family, word of mouth gets around.
People that worked with you and know your work and favors get returned. The NFL cycles a lot.

I could talk a lot about Scott Turner who got screwed in Washington too and is taking a little harder road.
I watched Scott grow up from the time he was 10...
His dad, Norv, I knew pretty well. He was always a good OC but sucked at Head Coach.

Not very in depth... just my observations.

I would imagine these interviews are unique to whoever is interviewing him. Once you get up to that level in your career whether it's a CEO job for a corporation or an offensive coordinator, the standard process for evaluating a future hire goes out the window.

The coach and GM has to find that the OC is compatible to what their vision is.
    Owner also.

Thanks for the response. I knew about the fraternity/familiarity aspect of coaches and coordinators. Amazing how badly Snyder screwed up the skins. And yinzers complain about Rooney. If they only knew how good they’ve got it.

We've got some issues, but a very small scale compared to that Snyder run junk.
Letting Canada back on the lot was a major screw up.
I think this go-around is when we can start getting the picture of how Ohmar works. (OC, Draft, FA)
