Hard to really judge him as bad as this offense is most games.

Steelersfan43 is quick with the breaking news! Second one I was coming to post that you already posted.

Only thing that worries me about this is the good teams beat up on this defense. Hard to know if that was defensive design or player injuries.

Agreed. It's only a 2-year deal and I'm sure it's not for a lot of money.

Kept him as a figurehead cuz Tomlin is the puppet master. Nobody’s gonna want to come in as DC with Tomlin controlling everything

    Very interesting.

I thought, typically, coordinators got 3 year deals and position coaches got 2 year deals.

Same as it ever was. I mean we are having so much success why mess with it.

I'm not totally against this. Through the final stretch the team played it's #3 and #4 S's and #4 and #5 ILB's and actually rose to the challenge. I would've like to have seen Tomlin upgrade the defensive staff, but I don't view this as an end of the world type situation.

Austin resides on my 'warning track'
I'll never forget his folly in Bengal-land. 500 yard games allowed... essh.
But I think he's improved, but I am still not 100% sold.

    2-years is palatable.

I'm convinced steeler 43 is a social influencer for the Steelers;) Actually I love the guy, he gets me all my Steeler info in one spot.

I agree. Many of the defensive issues have to be ascribed to the lack of offense, especially early in games.

I think next year a healthy D could be very surprising. My only concern is if Cam is slowing down and we keep him too long (which is painful to say), and if we keep hold of Pat P.

Let's see what he does with a full defense. Can anyone tell me what the defensive stats were before all the injuries?

All i know is the defense got lazy when Mason played because they weren't on the field as quickly.

In PPG and yards per game, they were better in the second half when they had injuries that they were in the first half....This is likely because our offense were better after Canada was out and that the steelers had played against several backup QB or awful offense in the second half but for the numbers it was still better in the second half

I remember at one point they were like 17th in PPG and 28th in yards per game in the first 6 games. They were also among the top in the league in turnovers but overall they were average at best

agreed - which was some of the big points in one of the other threads.

Now - to their defense (pun intended), the offense was SO DEPLORABLE that this D sits on the field A LOT. too much. the math says that the more you are on the field, (1) the more players will get injured, and (2) the more you will get beat!

I was ready for a BIG CHANGE.

    but Rooney was not.

    the Band keeps playing.

Austin is not really the DC - MT is. it is another indictment, as has been stated ad nauseam. Has not been an intimidating dominating Steel Curtain defense since TP, JH and Co. left town.

I don't know that Tomlin actually pulls the strings on Defense.
I knew he clashed with LeBeau in the beginning, Tampa 2 vs LeBeau's 'fire-zone' and 'zone-blitz' schema.

The interaction would be in the game planning stages.
Austin was picked because they agree. Austin's schemes remind be of Petitbon's 'bend but don't break' schemas.
So, yes... I could see Tomlin having impact there as he should.

The defense was never the main issue. I would still love to see someone who has a really strong schematic mind that has history running the more man-centric schemes that we are trying to employ. But there is also the avenue of whether or not a great defensive mind would want to come work for a HC who has his hands on their defense as much as Tomlin would.

Austin has had some things to like, some things to dislike... better than his predecessor and better than the offensive side of the ball. Hardly a home run imo. He's ok.

I really don’t think Austin is a major issue. Think most of the D is through MT anyway. Offense on the other hand has been a glaring weakness for 5 years now. They have to get that hire right.
