Thats when Pro Bowl had a better meaning, plus he was also all pro for 5 straight years, 1x MVP, 4x rushing leader (in a time when rushing was more prominent).

Played for a team that sucked, but still produced.

They gave TJ Watt this honor to lessen the blow when unfortunately Garrett will be the NFL DPOY even though Watt's stats say otherwise.

Buffalo wasn't very good back then but he was, kinda like Barry Sanders and the Lions. Great players, sorry team.

Are any of the top NFL DPOY candidates still in the playoff hunt? (at least those discussed in the media)

I was thinking the same thing about Sanders. Some exciting O players back then. Throw in Sayers, Sweetness and Dorsett.

there was a FB post in my feed, something about Franco being named the 2nd best RB in the 70's. The comments were ridicules, him running out of bounds, someone even said he really wan not a RB. lmao
that decade alone had some serious RB talent, Juice, Dorsett, Campbell, others, and of course Franco. IDK the list, but someone mentioned of all those on that list, who has 4 rings and a SB MVP...there you have it.

Is this a different media award?? Kind of ridicules calling TJ the best in the AFC, then saying a guy from the same conference and division is the best D player in the league, but then again TJ is not on the PFF team, lol..so much for consistency.

Gonna be 30 this 2024 season. Let's give him 5 (HOPE!!!!) more productive seasons. Probably gonna need that blind Squirrel to have a banner year for any chance of a SB but I do think if he holds up he'll get to play in a Steeler first round victory. How pissed would we be if we get the Bye* and yet again lose at home in first Playoff game:(

    * How we'd be that good in 2024 I have no idea.

I'd have loved to have TJ during Ben's first 7 -8 seasons. His fire and passion with those cast of characters........ We'd be waiting on #9;)

Steeler/Bill game at Three Rivers Stadium in 1975. I was living in Hawaii and we were at a guys house who happened to be a huge Bills fan and loved "prune juice". The piece of s... put up over 200 yards on us. They beat us that day and because I had to put up with that Bills fan BS, when Bills lost their 4th straight SB I gave a chuckle. As for prune juice, from that moment on I despised that piece of s..., I despise he got to make corny movies with Leslie Nielsen, I'd walk before renting a Hertz and given an opportunity I'd dispose of him.

I mean, NFL DPOY has to be either the AFC or NFC DPOY right? How can someone who wasn’t the best defensive player in their conference be the best one in the NFL?

You would think so, but is this THE or AN official award, or just one media company? The vote for DPOY and MVP is from selected 'journalists" and here is a report from one on why TJ did not get his vote...and mostly based on the PFF crap.

Peter King admits why he voted down T.J. Watt for DPOY (msn.com)

Dick butkus and Joe Thomas are a couple good ones that never won a playoff game.

Butkus never won one? That’s surprising but before my time. Yeah maybe TJ never winning one won’t be the best player not to get a playoff W.

I don't think so, but hey, Garrett did manage to completely disappear while that Browns defense got its ass kicked in Houston.

Just in from the Tribune:

"T.J. Watt won’t find out if he will win a second AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year award for another two weeks. But Wednesday, it was announced he lost out to Myles Garrett for a similar honor.

Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ star edge defender, was named the Professional Football Writers of America’s Defensive Player of the Year. While the AP’s award is considered more of the official honor of record, the PFWA’s balloting typically aligns with it. In only one of the past 10 years has the PFWA DPOY pick differed from the AP’s: In 2017, the former’s pick was Calais Campbell, the latter’s Aaron Donald.

Since the turn of the century, that is one of only three instances the PFWA and AP did not agree on who was the NFL’s best defensive player. One of those occasions came in 2010, when the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Troy Polamalu took home the AP honor, but the PFWA went with the Green Bay Packers’ Clay Matthews.

Watt led the NFL in sacks with 19. Garrett was tied for seventh with 14. Watt also had a league-high 36 QB hits, tied for second in the league in defensive fumble recoveries with three, had the fifth-most forced fumbles with four and ranked fifth in tackles for loss with 19. All rankings were higher than Garrett’s. Watt also had more tackles (68 to 42), solo tackles (48 to 33) and passes defended (8 to 3) than Garrett.

The Browns did finish No. 1 in the NFL in total defense (yards allowed); the Steelers were 21st. The Steelers, though, allowed fewer points per game.

Watt in 2020 finished as runner-up for the AP DPOY award to Donald and in 2019 placed third in the AP balloting.

The AP award will be announced during the NFL awards show Feb. 8"
