I continually think that Mike Tomlin hires coaches that seem to be way beneath him for purposes of his own security. I have no proof of this of course but there doesn’t seem to be many teams wanting to go after our assistants. I doubt he will land a top notch OC. I hope I’m wrong but so far nothing makes me believe he will give up control. He needs to keep this gravy train on its tracks. JMO.

I don’t really care about coaching trees. Tomlin typically hires older coaches that typically aren’t in the market for a head coaching job. Munchak and Haley were both former head coaches for example. So was Flores.

Belichick has an extensive coaching tree, with very little success.

The success is that a lot of teams thought enough of Bill to hire his assistants. Not what they did with that opportunity

The player list may grow a bit in the the future as a handful of former Cowher players occupy position coach/coordinator status

It is crazy how under appreciated Gildon is. He was the Steelers all-time sack leader for a long time. He barely ever gets a mention when talking about great Steelers linebackers.

this implies that there was once a tree to cut down. There has NEVER been a tree!

But to the question of wins and losses, here is what I found:
    Capers 40-80
    Gailey 34-46
    Haslett 47-61
    LeBeau 12-23
    Lewis 131-122
    Mularkey 36-53
    Whisenhunt 48-71
    Arians 80-48
    Culley 4-13
    Total W-L= 432-527

That of course does not include playoffs or time as coordinators which many of them have.

Most of Bill's assistance were younger guys though, still moving up the NFL ladder. Mike hires experienced guys, a lot of do not have the ambition to be a head coach.

***THIS RESPONSE IS NOT DEFENDING TOMLIN'S COACHING CHOICES, ITS PUTTING TO BED THIS IDEA THAT COWHER FOUND ALL OF THESE UNKNOWN GREAT COACHES***

Let's get factual on this though:

Dom Capers, Jim Mora coaching tree
Chan Gailey, Dan Reeves coaching tree
Jim Haslett, Art Shell coaching tree
Dick LeBeau, Mike McCormack coaching tree
Marvin Lewis, Chuck Noll coaching tree
Mike Mularkey, Sam Wyche coaching tree (or Chuck Noll as a player)
Ken Whisenhunt, Ted Marchibroda coaching tree
Bruce Arians, Jim Mora coaching tree
David Cullen, Sam Wyche coaching tree

Mike Vrabel, Bill O'Brien coaching tree (or Cowher as a player if you like, but as a player it was probably more Belichick).

All of these guys held multiple NFL coaching positions before getting to Bill, so Bill did not "discover" any of these guys.

Capers - Saints DB coach before being hired as Steelers DC

Gailey - Broncos TE and ST coach, Broncos WR and TE Coach, Broncos QB Coach, Broncos OC.....then Steelers WR coach, then Steelers OC

Haslett - Raiders LB coach, Saints LB coach, Saints DC......then Steelers DC (Also of note, he was the DC of 2 of the worst seasons the Steelers have had since the merger).

LeBeau - Eagles ST coach, Packers DB coach, Bengals DB coach, Bengals DC...........then Steelers DC.......then back to the Bengals to be DC

Lewis - Steelers LB coach (Under Noll), Steelers LB coach (Under Cowher), then Ravens DC...Bengals HC

Mularkey - Player under Noll, Buccaneers TE Coach, .........then Steelers TE Coach, Steelers OC

Whisenhunt - Ravens TE coach, Browns TE coach, Jets ST coach, ..............then Steelers TE coach, Steelers OC

Ariens - Chiefs RB coach, Saints TE coach, Colts QB coach, Browns OC...........then Steelers WR coach, Steelers OC (As of note, he wasn't even considered for a head coaching job until the Colts coach got cancer and ended up doing a decent job filling in).

Culley - Bucs WR coach.........then Steelers WR coach......Eagles WR coach, Chiefs WR coach, Ravens WR coach....then Texans HC.

I think you are missing the point of "coaching tree". The point is that they coached under Cowher and then moved on to a higher position. The NFL is a carousel, these coaches are start somewhere nd get cycled through the teams and ranks, some with promotions, some with lateral moves in the same position.

Tomlin's tree however has very few branches, some may say none.

This is why the entire coach tree thing is bull****.

If you want to highlight who saw enough in a guy to bring them into the NFL then fine. Otherwise you are just a steppingstone in someone else’s discovery.

And therein lies the issue. He does not know how to hire assistants that can make the team better

Lloyd was long gone by the time Porter was drafted in '99.
