Tomlin told players he's coming back in 2024

I live in Eagle land and generally they have a short leash with their Coaches. They have had 12 to our 3 in SB era. Guy takes to the SB last season and get's them to 10-1 this season but all the fans are saying is he is a siht show and they want him gone. Kind of works for the Eagles. Only 1 SB but they rebound quickly from dreadful seasons.

 

In ‘17 they lost to the Jags by 3. That’s the season they lost Shazier which compromised that defense. It was a bad loss but “embarrassing”? We know what happened in ‘20. Going into that playoffs it was evident that Ben had declined and wasn’t the same guy he was even earlier in that season. Then he went out there and threw 4 picks which helped the browns jump out 28-0. Even in that game, they showed resilience and fight to get back in it and make it competitive.

If McCarthy is fired it’ll be because of how they lost. They got blown off the field at home to a #7 seed with a first year starter. Dak was being talked about for mvp. They showed no fight or resilience. It was never a game. It’s a lie to say that Tomlin has been in McCarthy’s position.

Your “gotcha” fails because 61% isn’t 63%. It’s simple math.

To move past the “gotcha”, I point to the organization that made such a decision to fire a coach after going 14-2. The chargers have won a SB and don’t know how to win one. They’ve been thru tons of coaches and resets in their “culture” since Marty and have nothing to show for it. It seems as if many of y’all want to emulate less franchises that can’t sniff the Steelers success.

The only team that I’d agree had a chance of contending was the ‘17 team but that season was torpedoed by Shazier’s injury. The defense wasn’t the same after he got hurt and Ben and the killer b’s couldn’t win a shootout against the Jags in the playoffs.

How is that a comparison to what just happened to the Cowboys? Did Parsons get hurt and miss the game?

Regardless of what the salary cap is, if you think that team was built to “win now” then you’re a few sandwiches shy….. They were literally predicted to finish last in n the division before the season.

Yes, the Jags loss was embarrassing. We lost by 3 because we scored with literal 1 second on the clock in garbage time to make it a 3 point game. We got gashed in the run game and got 45 points hung on us by an offense led by Blake Bortles. I know you love to blame Ben instead of Tomlin, but 469 yards 5 TD and 1 INT SHOULD have been enough to win. I get that he threw an early pick that helped us get behind, but it was a total team failure that led to this outcome.

Le'Veon said that we were "looking forward to payback against New England" prior to the game. We simply just overlooked Jacksonville and got smacked in the mouth because of it. I've watched and remembered every playoff game since 1994 (too young prior to that), and it was the most embarrassing playoff loss we've had outside of MAYBE the Chargers loss in the AFC Championship.

We can play the blame game, but the last 5 playoff games the Steelers have played we've been absolutely destroyed right out of the gate. We've managed to squander being favorites (by overlooking teams and getting out game-planned) and failed to gameplan our way into close games as underdogs. These are the facts.

Yep, Tomlins coaching style is to have the team looking ahead to big matchups. He was praised for it early on cause of the initial success, but there's a reason every other coach at every level takes the one game at a time approach.

 

The defense is old. The offense is significantly younger. We are not built to win now. We are rebuilding.

 

The Steelers don't really "rebuild" in the true sense of the word. They just plug and play year after year, and hope for the best

 

How is having the highest winning percentage in Steelers history robbery ?

 

My man what is the point of putting the 6 Lombardis for the players to see every day they enter the building, I believe its saying this is the standard we aspire to, this is our goal. So with that being said and I hate having to write the same stuff how can you be satisfied with the performance the head coach has delivered over the last 5 playoff games. We have been outscored 66-0 in the first quarter in those games, 122-47 by the half time. We have been two AFC championship games in the last 14 years (I think I did the math right) all the while during a significant portion of that time we had arguably a first ballot Hall of Fame QB. We have been throttled by some seriously low level qbs in some of those playoff games and clearly were not prepared to play some of those games and our game plan was clearly not flexible enough to adapt quickly enough to what the opponents were doing to us. For this coach 17 non losing seasons in a row, great record but what are you paying this coach top dollars for, to just have a non losing season or to make deep playoff runs and compete in some Super Bowls.

This year alone we had numerous examples of undisciplined play (how many games and how many games in a row were we penalized for too many players on the field), players quit on the field and were not held accountable and your starting running back basically has said the team lacks discipline and not every player is committed. Couple that with issues Tomlin in the past has failed to handle such as allowing two sets of rules for players like Ben and AB and everyone else which divides the team, allowing Ben to host a radio show where he is calling out his own teammates, allowing AB to stream on Social Media from the locker room after a playoff loss with no consequences, misleading a player like James Harrison on his playing time leading that player to rebel and leave the team, etc, etc. Terrible clock management over the years, poor judgment on coordinators, terrible ability to make in game adjustments, etc.

Great the players love to play for him but does that means that is what is best for the organization and generates the best results? Everybody wants an easy boss that you get along with, but every player from High School, College and the Pro's craves structure and discipline and this team has lacked it for a long time. As a player I would love Mike T, he's a players coach, but did he get the best out of every player. You think he pushed Ben and demanded more from his God given talent. Nothing I ever read indicated that. If his method worked and resulted in consistent playoff wins and AFC CG appearances I would say it does. Hell Bill lost 5 of them but he got to 5 with mid QB's other than Ben but even then it was time for Bill to move on. I want better results out of the $12m we pay him and we are not getting post season success which IS THE STANDARD OF THE ORGANIZATION!

I’ve always liked Tomlin. Like most here, I knew we’d struggle a bit post-Ben while we tried to rebuild. My thought is I’d rather rebuild while winning 9 or 10 games a season than tank for a potential “savior” early pick QB.

I’m fine with Tomlin staying. Having said that, I will be bummed if we don’t go get some hotshot new OC.

 

After reading through this thread I will also say that while it’s true that Marty was fired after a better season than 10-7, the Chargers aren’t exactly swimming in Lombardis after that decision, or even winning seasons for that matter.

The struggle hasn't been post-Ben... it started around 2012. It's been a struggle post-The-Team-That-Cowher-Bulid.

 

If 2011 to 2018 is any guide, we’re going nowhere, with or without a franchise QB.

only thing that can change my mind is if they find some up and coming OC and DC and let them take the reigns without any inference from old geezer Tomlin
