We just have to be realistic about what the "plug" meter is... The last thing we want to do is get a good OC, have him turn same old Kenny into a 210 YPG with like maybe 14TD's for the season, but still having the glaring issues he has, only to call it "progress and development" and continue to roll with him moving forward.

IMO it needs to be MARKED improvement. We can't just have a few solid games, throw up 20 PPG through the midway point of the season and claim Kenny is turning the corner.

Mason showed more feel for timing, rhythm throws. really a shame he threw that INT and too inside last night, what a difference the game could have been.

DJ runs great routes. Does have bobble hands too much, but not LAST NIGHT. And he made great moves, getting the first downs. and he protected the ball. textbook night for him

Agreed. Team must hire a new OC outside of the building and then Pickett needs to step up or take a seat. There will be no more excuses for him, and I am higher on his potential than most. Doesn't matter if it doesn't translate to results on the field.

It's not a coincidence that DJ's uptick in production coincided with Mason taking over. Kenny might have a variety of strengths (not sure what they are, but let's assume that he has some), but passing TDs ain't one of them, and neither is passing to DJ.

This is why I want someone like Ben Johnson to take the helm. Has a history of taking a forgotten cast off QB and turning him into a good player again. Comes from a pretty tightly buttoned ship under Dan Campbell. Took an offense that averaged 19 PPG in 2021 and took them to back to back top 5 offensive PPG performances (26.6 and 26.9 respectively).

We need to have our coaching start helping our play on the field, not win in spite of it.

I get that sentiment, but that could put at risk another season of the Watt window. If he’s holding the team back, the hook needs to be earlier. In fact, I think his starting job should be at risk in camp or even sooner if we find a better option.

I’ll admit that I don’t have much knowledge about Johnson, but his results with Goff have stunned me.

Thats fair, I can’t really argue that. I was just thinking new OC new playbook but really, they’ll have been working on that all offseason so if he has what ot takes, should show up fairly quickly.

And not have a contingency plan in place cause you let the best QB on your roster walk? Not smart at all.

I was thinking the same thing.

great a whole slew of “new” topics with a different caption saying the same things we all already know.

    -The team is stale.
-We got beat by a better team who was better prepared.
-The same group of guys we all know have to go.
    -The coaches have to go.

    etc etc etc…

I want a new regime in here too, but who? Who is available that ACTUALLY IS better?

I’m kinda rolling along with Colin Cowherd on this now. With all of the rules in this era, I’d rather swim with the tide and have an offensive minded head coach.

When was the last time a defensive first team with a top defense won the Super Bowl? How many in the last 10-20 years versus?

I'd like to see KP with a real OC. I figure Tomlin is back. The OC is the most interesting move we will make.

Perhaps. Accounts that I read from camp this past summer were that Kenny was looking good, and then he looked like a hugely improved QB in the preseason vs vanilla defenses. But then the regular season came… and well, you know what happened. I think Canada undoubtedly had a role in his lack of success, but how much was Canada and how much was Pickett? Point being, I’m not sure how much to trust before real games start.

    Ya, really.

If the backup to Pickett is uber unknown or known to suck (like Dobbs), some of the fans will stick to the "unknown means worst" idea, and give Pickett some rope.

But if the backup to Pickett is Rudolph, 99% of the fans (you and scribe being the exceptions :) ) will want Rudolph starting every preseason game.

I mean, if they keep Rudolph and Pickett, Pickett will get booed if he started the first preseason game before even throwing a pass.

I think the major problem is an organizational philosophy that is outdated. The loyalty part is a flaw. Ie keeping Canada no matter what. The “Steeler” way is outdated. No one is scared to play the Steelers. Or anyone really. The rules have changed and the game has changed. Winning on defense is no longer something you can do. Sure it works in the regular season at times. But not when it matters.

Steelers are soft compared to what they used to be. Somehow Balt, Browns and Cinci are more "steeler like" than Steelers.

I don't think loyalty to coordinators is a steelers thing. I remember Cowher changing OCs and DCs yearly, so the loyalty to Canada and promoting coaches from within seems like a Tomlin thing.

I fully agree that "keeping the game close to win it with a splash play in the 4th" is completely stupid, but again, that's a Tomlin thing, not a Steeler thing. Cowher used to take 10+ point leads and the run the F out of the clock. 10 point leads are a luxury these days for the Steelers.

I think you’re right actually. It’s more of a Tomlin thing than a Steeler thing.

also to note Cowher with a 11 point lead was 108-1-1. Which is an amazing stat. I realize offenses are scoring more now. But still a crazy stat.

Brandt is annoying with the Angry Runs segment on GMFB.... but he's right about Tomlin/Steelers.

    Amen

Though I’m not sure I agree with his prescription to cure the ill. He said be bold in the draft. The problem with that is it could lead to reaching and subsequently setting you back. See Devin Bush.

The draft should both be best player available and fill needs. That’s not necessarily bold.

Let's say Steelers didn't get Wilson and we were headed to camp with Rudolph and Pickett. Regardless who won the starting job it would be a nightmare. Fans would be screaming for the other one every time we had a bad start.
