I agree. The notion of a "spoiled punk" is not exactly alien to rookies in the NFL, after all. But there is a distinct inconsistency about how these things are dealt with, and frequently it is left for the teams to meat out the punishment. Which, if they have a star player, they really aren't going to. I know it would be unpopular - I remember Ben's suspension for bringing the game into disrepute was, for some, an example of how the league hates us - but the NFL needs to be more proactive in weeding this kind of nonsense out.

I'm not sure it comes down to that kind of either/or - after all, each case is different - but you're right that this "Steeler Way" idea is as much an ideal as it is a reality, and history bears this out.

The cap hit would be so enormous that it would wreck the team.

They didn't get rid of James Harrison, and he got arrested for smacking his lady, they wouldn't get rid of Ben.

Yep, forgot about that one. And I think that pretty much proves my point. Team MVP beats his wife...nothing. Team scrub beats his girlfriend...off with his head. The double standard is obvious.

Oh yeah, and wasn't Harrison getting arrested the time that Rooney got on TV and made that pathetic excuse that he was just trying to take his kid to church?

This past year's draft has a curse or something.

    1. Decastro - Missed most of season with Injury
    2. Adams - Jury still out
    3. Spence - Season ending Injury
    4. Ta'amu - Rampage - GTA style.
    5. Rainey - Slapped his GF, Rooney biatch slaps him - kicked off team
    6. Clemons - Is he even on the practice squad?
    7. Paulson - Well, we're getting a little something from him
    7. Federick - Who?

The jags grabbed Clemons off of our practice squad a few months ago. I don't think Frederick even made it through training camp.

Frederick was cut during the last round of camp roster cuts. The Giants signed him to their PS, and he ended up seeing action in a couple games I believe.

It's still a business guys, don't kid yourselves that that doesn't factor in, but even with that they still tried to move Ben and he wasn't even charged with anything and Harrison probably would have hurt too much to just cut him, what would have been the cap hit? And as far as I know, it was JH's first offense, the Steelers generally give second chances. Rainey was a nothing 5th rounder, easy to cut. Even if the Steelers were being hypocritical, why do you guys care? Feel sorry for Rainey? Piss on him.

I agree and thats my point. But this all was in response to someone saying that the Rooneys were giving notice because of it being a bad season...not the case.

The 'appearance' of a double standard exists whether it is justified or not when it comes to the "Steeler Way". There may be more to this story but I am sure we will never know. I do know that I once was a huge fan of Ben's but since his actions I see him in a total different light and the Steelers as well. Still a big member of Steeler Nation since before any Super Bowl win and that won't change. Just my two cents.

You're fooling yourself. After two accusations of rape a domestic violence charge is a guaranteed ticket out of town.

So you're saying if they didn't get rid of him the first two times, they definitely will on the third??

Face it. It's a very different day and time. Even the old time Steelers weren't choir boys by any means but today I think it's even more challenging to find great talented young men of good character that know how to keep their names off of a police blotter. As a result the Steelers and all NFL teams for that matter can't be as picky as they used to be.
