Thanks Mac, hopefully the FO can work some magic
with what we have to work with. I have full faith in the Rooney's
to field an entertaining and competitive product. I hope they EXPLORE
all avenues to do this. Changes need to be made on this team, the status quo
    just won't cut it.

If I am reading the article right this just supposes that the Steelers continue to shift money around to make room for next year a practice that has put them in the position they are in now. I thought you were against that Mac? Continuing to shuffle dead money and gambling the future away at the expense of the present.

i am to a point. as i said they need to get through next year. then the cap should go up, but if we keep pushing it forward it won't matter if it raises, we will still be well up against the raise.

some players that are under preforming such as colon, should be cut and use that two year spread to eat that dead money. i do believe we won't see much activity in the FA market and may see alot of UDFA usage next year.

every year we pay these inflated salaries is a year closer to freeing up money for the future. every year we push those salaries to following years means we have this same problem in the future as well.

i think we keep harrison. eat the money. i think we keep woodley. eat the money. both of these guys allow us to eat up some of their bonuses for another year. ben almost has to be pushed forward. i would cut colon after june 1 and eat the smaller portion next year and then the larger portion in 2014 when the cap goes up. as for troy, he's close to the end of his contract so the dead money would be less of a hit then some others. i'm not sure what he would cost to cut loose.

suisham, cotchery, warren are almost locks to be replaced by UDFA players or a draft pick. keisel may be with that bunch i hate to say. Moo has put us in a tough spot too not knowing if he's off to jail or not but i have a feeling theres a clause that could free us up in his case. hopefully anyway. these few guys free up a million here and a million there, but we could sign young guys nearly two for one of their salaries. possibly more.

I really like this guy's cap analysis in terms of his understanding of the calculations. I am not sure that I agree with him on retaining Harrison given the savings we could get by taking the dead money hit vs. keeping him. In my opinion, this offseason we need to ask the question: "will he be a key contributor in 2014-2015" when making stay/go decisions. While that can't be the only factor, it needs to be a key factor. My reasoning is that we need to focus our limited 2013 cap dollars on younger players that we might otherwise lose, or not be able to acquire because of what we are paying older guys who are declining. In particular, I'm thinking about Keenan Lewis and Mike Wallace (if we can resign him at a 5/35 or 5/40 level). If we lose these guys (especially Lewis) because we hold onto a declining Harrison, or an oft-injured penalty machine like Colon, it would be a series of bad decisions for our future. At some point we will need to eat some dead money to avoid mortgaging our future. I think it starts with Harrison and Colon this offseason.

not much is said about guys like suisham and warren. there's about 2 and a half mil. sitting there. would they replace these two? warren isn't under contract. he made over 900,000.00. so his next one would be over a mil.. do we go youth here instead? how about suisham? would we go rookie or young tryouts here instead?

To what extent do we think that our poor record this season will affect contract negotiations in the off-season?

Someone like Wallace or Mendenhall might come in cheaper?

Other players might not want to come in cheaper because the obvious flipside - they are playing for a superbowl contender - might not be as convincing as it was before last season?

I know I get reminded of the James Harrison debacle every time I bring this up - but do we REALLY need one guy who's sole purpose is to throw the ball between his legs slightly further than the guy who does it for the rest of the game? Is this seriously a skill that is so refined and specialist that we need to pay Greg Warren every year to hang around for it? Is this something we really couldn't do without?

What the guy at BTSC does is tackle one group at a time. Since I posted this, he has also done the inside backers and concluded that restructuring Timmons' contract is a no brainer.

I'm not denying that. I'm questioning how much you want to pay someone who provides such a niche tool that really can't be that difficult to train a back up lineman to do.

they have talked before about his salary. it's fairly high for a LS. that million dollar range is pretty steep. i'm sure they can get another one in here on the cheap, saving better then a half a mil.. i see we brought hrappman back also. possibly saving another mil. from suisham. warren and suisham are good, but this may be one of those money issues that outweighs that.

as i said before we may sign some main guys but we also may have alot of UDFA's manning some other backup spots this year. a backup lineman or two and maybe a backup DE or two. an UDFA kicker and LS. robinson as depth at OLB. WR. RB. QB. golden back at safety. i don't think there is any question about victorian or vandyke at corner. maybe an extra young guy as a backup at ILB too. i'm not saying we won't draft these spots but backups may be young cheaper options behind them.

Suisham is going nowhere and he better go nowhere, guy had a great season, go pinch pennies elsewhere, having a reliable kickier is too important, especially at Heinz.

thats the trouble, they are out of spots to pinch pennies. hrappman kicked well last year in preseason and warren has never had a bad snap that i remember, until late in the year at heinz field that ultimately kept us out of the playoffs. don't forget for two years in a row and through our SB , we had a backup longsnapper that didn't miss a beat, replacing warren. they are going to be that tight this year it looks like. i've got nothing against either guy but tough cuts are going to have to be made at some point.
