I didn't post those playoff statistics to show which quarterback was better. It was to give context to the subject of the thread. I wanted to show all the offensive numbers of the quarterbacks and the average points scored, and then contrast that with how the defenses played for those teams which sort of paints a picture of why there was success....or why there have been struggles in the playoffs.

Clearly, Tomlin's defenses have been a problem. Under Tomlin, opposing teams have averaged scoring over 27 points per game. That is far too many points to be allowing under playoff conditions. You aren't going to win a ton of games in the playoffs if your team needs to score that many points to win games.

Thanks for the clarification. The defensive failures have been a disappointment, especially since Tomlin is a defensive guy and has had his fingerprints all over the defense for many years. I remember him even tweaking the defense when Dick LeBeau was the DC which was somewhat controversial because LeBeau had the defense well under control.

And I posted that Bradshaw vs. Ben response mostly for @S.T.D’s benefit, lol.

defenses after Pola, Harrison, Hampton, Farrior, etc. moved on (AKA - Cowher's defenses, LeBeau's defenses) were failures, this is true. ANOTHER blow to the Tomlin legacy, IMO.

he drafted Timmons and Woodley - but even Waldo Woodley was a few seasons one hit wonder.

and then for MANY MANY years, I said: Ok - now it is on you BEN - you and the offense - to carry your weight. and you know what - THEY COULD NOT GET IT DONE.

    that is the Legacy......

It may not matter, but you’d have to subtract opponents’ points scored off the offense (pick-6, the Pouncey Flyer, etc.).

correct - Ben and the offense put our D in bad spots many times, ESP that JAX disgrace of a game in 2017.

Wonder if there's any correlation to our lack of post season success and the fact that playoff opponents tend to be better teams with better coaches?

Remember that Mason had an opportunity. Ben had his season ending injury and Mason took over. He got knocked out by Earl Thomas, beat with own helmet and lost the job to Duck. I thinks he’s grown a lot and is a better player, but he had a previous opportunity, he just didn’t prevail.

Define “opportunity”. What I saw in Mason was a good young quarterback who had flashes in which he played really well and at other times played poorly. He looked the part of a promising young quarterback trying to find his way in the NFL. That 2019 season was as tumultuous as any I’ve seen a young quarterback have. Serious knockout concussion (which I don’t believe he ever fully recovered from that season), a victim of attempted murder on national television by an out of control thug and then attempted character assassination by the lying, race baiting fool! He was a kid and that entire debacle of a season derailed his career and then Tomlin and company totally abandoned him after that for the next four years after a past his prime Ben came back. I keep hearing that Rudolph had every opportunity to win the job but that’s HOGWASH! He absolutely did not have every opportunity to win the job. Do you know who’s had more opportunity with worse results? Kenny Pickett! The Steelers have botched Rudolph’s career trajectory big time!

He had his opportunity, he may have got hurt but many people do. Ben got his start via injury. Tom Brady got his start via injury. They handed the team to him and he did not perform well at the time. He has grown a lot and that’s likely what he needed. You cannot put players failures on the coach entirely, he is a professional football player and he is well compensated. Most players get one chance in the pros, you have to capitalize on it. If you remember, they kept saying they were going to cut him because they would not keep three, Tomlin wanted him on the roster. Additionally, when they re signed him he had gotten zero interest from any teams. He has this opportunity today because Coach kept him on the team. This is pro ball and it is a business, nobody owes anyone anything.

He had a very limited window of opportunity, much less than the opportunity Kenny has been afforded. And you’re right, no one owes anybody anything, but Tomlin can thank his lucky stars that Mason Rudolph took over as staring quarterback three weeks ago it he’d be watching the playoffs from the comfort of his living room!

At any rate, not going back and forth on this. I’ve got a game to watch!

This includes the time with Cowher coaches and Superbowl run when he was very good. I bet his rating was below 75 in playoffs after 2011
