Question: At the Coin toss, how can you choose the direction you are going in the 4th Qtr?

Understanding The Coin Toss In Football - Four Verts Football

I read the above rules, but I don't understand all the options that the teams have at the coin toss, and at halftime. If the most important thing to you is to decide what direction you are going in the 4th QTR, what must you do at the Coin Toss to make this happen?

After watching the Chiefs vs Dolphins game last night, where one Redzone was still frozen and slick and the other was not, I wondered how a team could decide what way they are driving in the 4th QTR at the Coin Toss. FYI-The Chiefs field is heated, but it looked like only 1 side of the field had the heat working on it last night. Is the Chiefs field heated at Arrowhead Stadium? (msn.com)

If you win the Coin toss can you tell the Refs you want to decide your direction in the 4th QTR? Is the Direction of the 2nd Half determined at the coin toss?

If you choose to Defer, can the other team then choose Direction.

In the link, I don't see anything about what happens at halftime. Does anything happen to begin the 2nd half? If you chose to Defer, can you then choose direction in the 2nd half, or do you always just get to receive in the 2nd half going the opposite direction of the 2nd Qtr?

If you win the toss, you choose to receive. In the second half, they can choose to receive or which way to kick, but not both.
If they win and defer, you choose to receive. Then same as above.
If they win and choose to receive, there's no way to choose which end zone you get for the forth quarter, unless that's what you choose for your second half option. But then you'd be kicking off both halves.

So, if you win the toss you would need to defer at the coin toss and then choose direction instead of receive in the 2nd Half. (Thus kicking off twice)

So, the officials will get together with the captains again at half time to decide again who is Kicking / Receiving and which direction the teams are going for the 3rd and 4th QTR.

Curious to see what the Field in Buffalo is going to look like. They have stated that the Buffalo field is not heated, so it is going to be a frozen brick tomorrow. I guess it will be up to the Buffalo grounds department to determine what parts of the field get worked most during the game.

Anyone remember when the Patriots brought out the plow for the game winning FG?

I read this earlier this week about the 81 AFC playoff, bot sure it answers any question here, but the strategy for the Bengals worked in their favor, even though they actually kicked off at the start of both halves. Not sure if the rule has changed, but Forrest Gregg who played in the coldest game in NFL history up to that point used his knowledge to perfection.

The game was one of the few in NFL history in which the same team kicked off to begin both halves. Cincinnati won the toss and instead of receiving, elected to have the brutally cold wind at their backs to start the game, believing it would neutralize San Diego's passing game and help the Bengals to build an early lead. The strategy paid off as Cincinnati built a 10–0 lead in the first quarter. San Diego would score their only touchdown in the second, but gave up another score to the Bengals and trailed 17–7 at halftime. Accordingly, San Diego used its option at the beginning of the second half to receive the kickoff, resulting in Cincinnati kicking off to begin both halves—and in the same direction both times, using their second half option to again begin the half with the wind at their backs.

The team that defers to the second half has three choices: kick, receive, or choose direction to go.

Thanks. I did not remember anytime that this had ever happened, when a team kicked off twice to get their choice in direction.

it was just a fluke, the talk about the KC game this week and the 81 playoff came up and that stuck out in the thing I read.
